The popular web novel Coiling Dragon, a 21 book fantasy series by Chinese author I Eat Tomatoes tells the tale of a young man and his accomplices as they struggle to survive and grow strong. In a dog eat dog world, the weak are preyed upon by the strong, and the strong, by the stronger. Linley is a young man who was born into a small town of Wushan. As the story progresses, he realizes that all is not what it seems. As he tries to uncover the mystery of his parents disappearance he encounters many powerful adversaries who attempt to stop him, but he also meets many friends. Fueled by the desire for revenge, he strives to become stronger in order to avenge his mother, his father, and Grandpa Doehring. The many conflicts in Coiling Dragon such
The main characters in True Grit by Charles Portis resemble the main characters in a quest novel. Mattie Ross resembles the hero as she has a calling to her journey and she has the necessary courage and resolve to accomplish her journey. Rooster Cogburn bears a resemblance to the wise old man figure in a quest novel because he possesses a special arcane knowledge and he poses as a surrogate father to the hero. Ranger Labeouf is the helper because he has a special skill and has a knowledge the wise old man lacks. A true hero does not always have to be a superhero, a wizard, or a good samaritan. Sometimes a true hero does not need magical powers but only a goal, courage, and true grit.
There are three main characters in my story, their names being; Alephonsion Deng, Benson Deng, and Benjamin Ajak. These three boys, young as they were, are driven away from their own home with violence. This caused a significant change in how they viewed the world.“I couldn't understand why people were killing us. Did Alchol deserve to die? What wrong had we done to these people? Oh, Ma, why the killing?” The three boys also act so different compared to how we do, when around their own home they are expected to never cry, even this is put to the limits during some everyday tasks. One thing that is way different from the way we live is that, to be seen as a man, you must have your teeth pulled out… with a fish spear! “My gum felt like it was being torn apart by a sharp razor blade. My mouth filled with blood. Then the fish spear penetrated my teeth, splitting one in two and leaving half of it in the gum.” Also, they speak in quite a foreign way, they talk as if they fear that the other speaker will punish them if they are to mess up. This is what the characters are like in my book, hardened to the core like true people of this time, they were brave and willing to do whatever it takes to keep safe. Throughout the journey, the characters just get harder and harder, tougher and tougher. They will have more hard life experiences during the time period that this book covers than most people in America have in their entire life.
Throughout Spunk the characters are faced with well-defined and realistic conflicts, making the story enjoyable to read. In general there are many conflicts, but looking deeper into the text you will find the issue of love; two men fight over the woman they are in love with. More specifically, Spunk the protagonist of the story battles the ‘spirit’ of Joe Kanty. Spunk seems to slowly almost go insane, for seeing bobcats to Joe’s ‘spirit’ pushing and killing him.

Everyone comes across difficulties in their everyday life. It doesn’t matter how small you are or how big you are or even how tough you are, you run into a problem every single day. Some problems are easier to handle and you can work them out by your self like Beowulf did with Grendel. Some problems might be too difficult to handle or no way of concurring it by yourself. There are a lot of hard things we come across that we may need help on just like the dragon in Beowulf. Beowulf needed a little help with the dragon. The dragon was too much for him to handle and it was beating Beowulf. I have faced a few “personal dragons” on my own including my parents getting a divorce when I was young and collage.
Beowulf is a poem about strength and courage. This is illustrated in the eighth section of the story called “Beowulf and the Dragon.” A slave, a hero and a dragon play a big role in this section. The characters are well developed, as is the setup for the conclusion of the poem.
“Chaos theory proves that unpredictability is built into our daily lives.”(Crichton 313). Ian Malcolm’s words resolve the book, Jurassic Park, in a very absolute way. Throughout the book, Malcolm, spoke about chaos theory and his self proclaimed “Malcolm Effect” to explain his reasoning in his predictions. Ian Malcolm had predicted the demise of Jurassic Park even before its opening, as well as its multiple problems and difficulties. Malcolm’s theory is evidenced countless times throughout the story of Jurassic Park; dinosaurs are breeding, dinosaurs are escaping, and systems fail.
The storyline for many fairy-tales follow the same structure, there is a damsel in distress and a hero is there for the rescue. This simple concept is complexed within many classic novels. Cat’s Eye by Margaret Atwood shows how overcoming traumatic experiences may transform individuals from their state of despair into a peaceful mindset. On the other hand, Arthur Goldman’s Memoirs of a Geisha focuses on a girl who struggles to navigate through the constant obstacles of life. These two novels demonstrate how the lingering effects of a strained past may impact an individual significantly, yet coming across their own personal saviours allows their destiny to take a turn for the better. The protagonists exemplify a common theme throughout the novels: a feeling of betrayal and a saviour’s guidance. This generates inner strength from within the protagonists which allows them to overcome their respective pasts.
In The Blood Meridian, by Cormac McCarthy, the kid goes through many tough times starting off from a very young age. The kid in some cases has a taste for mindless violence that he fulfills often. The aggression the kid shows seems to come natural to him in a way that it seems to be in his nature to be a savage on a day to day basis. The kid is born evil and becoming an expert in acts of savage violence throughout the story.
First is the hero Beowulf. In his time, he served as a valiant hero and, eventually, king. He heard tell of a monster that appeared in the night and caused much sorrow for all the deaths he wrought. Despite the fact that this monster terrorized a kingdom far from his, Beowulf quickly ordered a strong ship built and set sail for this other kingdom. He then waited for the monster, at the risk of his own life, in a great hall. Even though he may die, he still is willing to try and defeat the monster. Beowulf exemplifies incredible bravery as well, by attempting to defeat the monster with only his bare hands. Later, he even goes after the beast's mother, who lives in the
These sagas reveal the contentions that can arise between men in a stateless society, and follow a deliberate sequence of injuries; then cases of revenge and then settlement. They also valued heroic qualities like courage, loyalty, physical ability, and over-zealous defense of rights and honor.
“Beowulf,” a heroic epic passed down by word of mouth until the 6th century, tells of a brave soldier who gained glory by defeating different beasts. Beowulf, King of the Geats, chased riches and treasures every chance he got. His pride and desire for glory led him to Denmark to defeat the dreaded Grendel- a demonic beast who seeked vengeance for the intrusion of the Danes. Beowulf
In the past weeks we have read “Beowulf, “by Daniel Donoghue. Beowulf is an old English epic poem which includes three important monsters, Grendel, Grendel’s Mother, and the Dragon. Each monster had a big part of the epic poem. Grendel was assumed to be killed by Beowulf, until Beowulf showed up at the palace and was told the monster attacking them was Grendel. Once Beowulf finally killed Grendel, his Mother appeared. However, at the very end the most important monster to me was the Dragon. The Dragon is the one that put an end to Beowulf’s life.
For my book project I read the book Way of the Peaceful Warrior, by Dan Millman. Set in Berkeley California, Dan Millman a college student struggles to find the part of himself that has always been missing. One night while out walking from his dorm, Dan comes across a gas station and a strange man that is soon to turn his life upside down. This man, known as Socrates, shows Dan a side of existence that only few people had ever seen. To become a warrior like Socrates and have the mind to not allow the regular struggles of life to control a single part of you. Socrates takes Dan in and tries to create a warrior from a young star athlete with the ignorance of every other human on this earth. Through his teachings Dan comes across an elusive women named Joy. This spiritual journey shows Dan a side of life never seen by his own eyes before, and guides him to his final conflict that hopefully will help him reach his destination he has always yearned for. The missing piece of the puzzle that is Dan Millman. This book shows life in a way that I had never thought of before. It shows the many steps it takes to become, "a warrior." In most cases it is Socrates showing the ignorant Dan the differences between their
