How to Use a Condom Correctly, Teen

Using a condom correctly and consistently is important for preventing pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Condoms work by blocking contact with bodily fluids that can result in pregnancy or spread infection. This is called the barrier method.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONDOMS?
There are both male and female condoms. A male condom is a thin sheath that fits over an erect penis. Male condoms can be made from different materials, including:
• Latex.
• Polyurethane. This is a type of plastic.
• Synthetic rubber.
• Lambskin or other natural membranes.

• Wrap the condom in tissue or toilet paper and discard it in a trash can. Do not flush it down the toilet.
• Do not use the same condom more than once. Use a new condom every time you have sex. Female condom
• Store condoms in a cool, dry place.
• Before using a condom:
○ Check the package to make sure it is not past its expiration date.
○ Make sure that both the package and the condom do not have any holes, rips, or tears in them.
○ Make sure that the condom is not brittle or discolored.
• Place the condom inside your vagina before engaging in any contact with your partner's penis. To do this:
○ Squeeze the inner ring and insert it into the vagina like a tampon.
○ Use your index finger to push it into place. There should be about one inch of condom outside of the vagina to expand during sex.
○ Make sure the outer part of the condom completely covers the labia.
• Female condoms are already lubricated. You can also use water-based or silicone-based lubricants with female condoms. Do not use oil-based lubricants.
• Your partner should withdraw his penis shortly after ejaculating. Before you stand up, grasp the condom. Twist the outer part slightly to hold in fluid and carefully remove
