DOUBLE CONSCIOUSNESS
What is double consciousness? Is it good or is it bad? Does it affect us or the people around us? What kind of impact does it have? Double consciousness is when you are an individual from a society and you adapt to that while growing up with another society’s culture simultaneously. The identity is divided into a few levels. For example, how you act when you are alone or with your own and the way you act outside or in larger groups. Most of America continues to live double consciousness because it has many diverse societies and cultures within the “American” culture. DuBois says the following “an American, negro; two souls; two thoughts”. I can imagine that the concept of double consciousness is not an easy one especially during the time of slavery. As Du Bois tries to explain that you are a Negro growing up in an American “house”. One is constantly being judged in the eyes of the American. Is double consciousness good or bad? It actually depends on the situation because if we take double consciousness from the view of Du Bois, he is explaining double consciousness as a bad thing. He explains that slaves or Africans had to lives, two identities and they were judged on the eyes of white people. They were forced to take on an identity because they were slaves and were judged by their white owners. Today, double consciousness in all over the world. People can go to different countries to make a better living for their families. But they still have to take on the identity that comes from their upbringing yet take on the new identity when they are outside. This is not just in school but even when you are at a work place.
