Each of the children did very well with identifying concepts of a book the first child that we will look at is 6 years old. She goes to kindergarten all day and has grown up with many books around. She was able to hold the book right side up for me, show me the front cover, and show me the back cover. She was also able to show me the title page of the book. Lastly she was able to show me the first page of the text. Although she did do a good job of pointing out some main parts of the book she did struggle with a couple others. She wasn’t able to turn some of the pages of the books she would skip three or four at a time. She also had a hard time pointing to the title of the book if it was not in the top of the cover. Lastly the child could not tell me what an author and illustrator did. The next section was conventions of print the child was able to do everything on this list with excellence. She was able to show me where the text was, show me where we start to read at, read left to right, top to bottom and knew that when you reached the end of a line you would have to go to the left...

These children understand that each segment of writing represents a word and they are even able to recognize when a text is upside-down because they are accustomed to the appearance of writing. This puts the child significantly ahead when the time comes to learn to read.
Picture books are books in which both words and illustrations are essential to the story’s meaning (Brown, Tomlinson,1996, Pg.50). There are so many different kinds of children’s books. There are books for every age and every reading level. There are many elements that go into picture books such as line and spacing, color and light, space and perspective, texture, composition and artistic media. Not every child learns effectively with the same technique. You need to find what works for each individual child. (Take parents advice. They usually know). Example: My child is easily distracted. Even if you have a shirt on with a lot of words or designs, she will read a bit and keep stopping to look your shirt. Patience is a must! As the art of printmaking progressed, the intaglio style was introduced. Intaglio printmaking remains a major category to date. Intaglio techniques include images incised into metal plates, usually made from copper, along with a combination of tools and acid. After the artist is done carving into the plate, it’s coated with ink. The surface is wiped clean, and all that remains is ink within incised areas. A dampened paper is then pressed against the plate for a final product (182).
PRINTING PRESS AND STANDARDISATION In 1476, William Caxton introduced England to the printing press. This significant introduction to one of the world’s greatest technological innovations, at the time, helped to increase the spread of literacy and knowledge amongst the British people as the mass production of books became cheaper and more commonly available.
