The current job specifications for the store manager position at CompTech is that they must have either a MBA degree or have at least 3 years of store manager experience to be hired as a new manager. Additionally, the district managers seem to have a persuading effect on the hiring process where there is no room for compromise when these terms are not met as they want. Another aspect, of the hiring process for these store managers have the company searching the country through high cost advertising that reveals that internal promotion is deemed either ineffective or unwanted by the distict managers and higher management. Another very important facet to HR recruiting should include a proactive approach to developing these internal candidates through mentorships and employees who are taking business and management courses that the company reimburses cost. Employees who take the initiative to take classes are internally motivated to advance within the company and in this case it is clear that CompTech has not taken full advantage of these internal candidates. One other aspect is that the HR managers are not all in one accord working together and are being maligned by the district managers who want external hires over their internal candidates. To this end, it is clear that for this company to get recruiting and hiring cost under control there should be a more structured approach that curtails expensive advertising practices. Additionally, it is important to develop more internal candidates through mentorships where proficient assistant managers are engaged in a processes known as a fast track model. Once these assistant managers complete this mentoring process they should be interviewed and back fill the company’s needs for store
Last year Marianne delegated on-site campus interviews to three department managers to be recruiters preparing them only with a briefing to keep their questions specific to qualifications for the job. The three managers conducted 64 interviews over one week at four different college campuses and most failed to file interview reports in a timely manner. This year Marianne recognized that last year’s schedule was perhaps too rigorous for only three managers so this year she has instead selected twelve managers to be recruiters on just one college campus each. Marianne’s poorly managed campus recruiting program, has led her to seek the advice of professional HR colleagues to improve her efforts during this year’s campus recruiting program.

C & C grocery store currently operates under a goal approach. They were committed to customer service and satisfaction. This approach provided the grocery chain with the profitability and growth they strived to obtain. The stores operative goals were attained and the chain had over 200 stores in operation. For years overall performance for C & C was excellent and came with ease. Unfortunately employee development and innovation and change weren't a top priority and it began to show. To remain successful C & C had to outsource and get advice from a team of consultants. The team dissected the company from top to bottom and advised the chain to implement an internal approach to go along with the goal approach. Implementing the internal approach will give the store managers full control of their stores which they do not currently possess. The store managers should be knowledgeable in all areas of the store to be able to fully communicate with staff. It was difficult for the district managers to give each store location the time and attention they needed when they were responsible for several other stores. Giving store managers more responsibility was a terrific idea of the consultants because the store managers have more day to day customer and employee interaction and could better assist needs. C & C was in desperate need of providing employee training and development. Cross training is beneficial for company as well as employees. Employees get the opportunity to learn other job positions and have the ability for advancement opportunities within the company. To avoid this scenario, Dell has created a web-based Organizational Human Resource Planning (OHRP) process. These processes help a business unit focus on and anticipate growth and staffing needs. In addition the OHRP process allows managers to do their own succession planning, identify key jobs, and formulate competency planning and employee development.
