Beliefs about Brahman The Hindus believe that the Brahman is the supreme lord, and is the only thing that exists forever and everything else eventually dies. They believe that Brahman is constantly creating, destroying, and re-creating the universe. Even the deities (gods) aside and the human soul (atman) are connected the the Brahman. To connect with the deities ancient Hindus built temples back in the 6th century C.E. They even wrote instructions how to build them, and these temples are still being built using the sacred directions. Many of the Hindu temples are huge in size and design. In the ancient times, the deity Indra god of thunder was the most powerful. Now in the present, Hinduism’s most important deities are Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Brahma creates the universe, Vishnu preserves it, and Shiva destroys it. Devi is also an important deity. Devi expresses the female power of the universe. Ancient texts about deities usually tell how they fought off evil. One popular story amount the Hindu religion is the Ramayana, and it’s about Rama’s fierce battle with Ravana. Hindu holidays are inspired by stories like Ramayana. For example, During the Diwali festival, the Hindu new year is celebrated. Diwali means “row of lamps”. Karma is a the belief where if a person lives well, they will be born into a good caste after reincarnation. On the contrary, if a person lives worse, they would live in a worse caste in their next life or reborn as animals. What determines if they live well or bad, is if they follow the concept of dharma. The law of karma makes the universe fair according to Hindus. The reason why the law of karma is fair is because, the caste they get set in is depending on the karma they had in their past lives. Which is also why Hindus cannot escape the caste they get born into.
