Karma. The big working force in our universe that has captured the attention of billions of people on this planet. Karma has become something to blame our transgressions on. We constantly hear: “Watch out, karma will get you!” in our society, but do we really know where this idea of karma comes from? Or how this idea relates to our lives? We have to trace the idea of karma back to its roots in the ancient Asian religious traditions. Karma is thrown around as a term of superstitious belief in popular American culture today, but it still plays an immense role in shaping the destiny of millions of people today. We see this process in the novel Seven Taoist Masters. The basis of this novel is simply achieving immortality and setting one’s own destiny. We see this first with Master Wang. Master Wang is a generous man who took beggars into his home (Wong 2004, 4-5). The beggars were immortals who had come down to find someone who was destined for immortality (Wong 2004, 5). By showing great hospitality, Wang manipulated his karma and was able to set himself on a path to immortality. Indra found this out the hard way. He was the king of the gods (Lidke 10-24-2017). The narrative starts off with this king meeting a brahmin boy, who begins to speak about the many universes and how there are infinite Indras (Lidke PPT 7, 18-20). Then suddenly ants rush in all in a line into Indra’s palace (Lidke PPT 7, 18-20). The boy begins to explain to Indra that the ants represent his past lives, and that each ant is another reincarnation of himself (Lidke PPT 7, 18-20). Indra then begins to realize that his destiny can be shaped instead of repeating itself (Lidke PPT 7, 18-19).
