Songs are written to evoke emotion and feelings that people can relate to. Song writing, or lyricism, is an art form. Lyricists carefully craft their lyrics to not only entertain an audience, but to also evoke an emotional response whether it be happiness, anger, sadness, etc. Songs are not solely the instruments emitting a rhythm but the lyrics as well. The instruments reflect the tone that is set in the lyrics. Music can be only instruments, but that is categorized as instrumental music. A person can extract the message of a song by listening to the lyrics. Two strongly contrasting songs in terms of genre, tone, message, and context are Heathens by Twenty One Pilots and Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World. There are literary similarities, …show more content…
They realize that they were ignorant to the concept in the beginning. This is a powerful message, especially in today’s society because there is a multitude of varying social groups. This is shown more predominantly in high schools, but it can be seen at any age. People are judged quickly because it is in our nature as humans to assess a situation, assess a person based on their looks to determine whether there is a threat. Some people may come across as threatening, and as a society, we exclude them. Twenty One Pilots called these types of people as psychopaths, murderers, freak shows, and weird in their song. Although the person in reality may not be that extreme or dangerous, he or she can come across as strange. Twenty One Pilots is encouraging people not to be so quick to judge and to not read a book by its cover because we do not know the content based off of the …show more content…
The lyrics convey the message, but music aids in capturing attention and sending the intended tone or theme to the audience. Whether the message is to stop and think about the wonderful little things in life or to not judge people based on their looks, music has the power to inform people and influence action. This can be seen over time as What a Wonderful World was from the late 1960’s and Heathens is from this current year, 2016. I feel that music has the power to transform and mold views and emotions. The combination of an instrumental beat and the lyrics of the song are able to entertain an audience while sending a message and elicit emotional responses. Lyrics have
A man by the name of Charles Simic once said, “Poetry is an orphan of silence. The words never quite equal the experience behind them”(Quote Land). Poems have been written for thousands of years. When most people think of poetry, they either think of a sonnet, limerick, all the way down to a haiku. They also think that a poem is something that must be recited, but in reality a poem can also be sang as a song. Lately more and more songs that are being released have a story behind them, trying to express feelings of loneliness, death, or past experiences. One of the best examples would be rap. Rappers love to tell about “their” life in the city; when the times were rough because they were poor and all the violence going on. But rap isn’t the only type of music that can be interpreted as a poem.
I think music has a way of explaining something or telling a story. Music can bring up happy times, it can also bring up sad times as well. Certain songs can remind someone of troubling issues from a past, can be the reminder of someone you have lost, it can also be a reminder of many happy times; such as weddings, high school dances, or even just hanging out with friends in the back
Song lyrics have set off a great generation of our leisure time than reading poetic devices, therefore song lyrics are better than poetic devices. Song lyrics have dropped numerous lines that attach to us now a days and make us listen to the line over and over unlike poetic devices. Song Lyrics have so much meaning by word choice and by relations.”Mr. Rager” by Kid Cudi, is about people fed up with society and plan on taking a journey. “Dreams” by Edgar Allen Poe, is about a man who dreams of a greater life. Mr. Rager, the song by Scott Cudi, has a better meaning than Dreaming, the poem by Edgar Allen Poe, by personification, allusion, and symbolism.
Songwriters write about their lives since their lyrics are a reflection of their personal experiences. Often, a coping mechanism for dealing with a problem is to bring the issue out in the open.
In the musical world, there is so much that you can learn and take from a song. However, the only way you can understand a song is by picking up the themes that the artist has used to represent in his music. The way that the artist conveys his/her themes, is by the use of different literary devices to strengthen the emotion in which the artist wants to express the themes of his music. An example of artist portraying their emotions through their music, would be the artists Common and John Legend. In their song “Glory” they talk about the three themes of freedom/glory, togetherness, and power in peace, with the help of using simile, ballad, rhyme, anaphora and lyric.
Even though people listen to music just to hear the melody, music is a way to express certain feelings and think about what the song means to someone personally. 20th century pop artists including Dido, Louis Armstrong, and Garth Brooks reveal transcendentalist values of the 19th century Literary Movement through self-reliance, deliberate living, and importance of nature.
Since the earliest days of human civilization music has been a key tool for communication of stories which carried emotions through them. If we think back to our youngest years of life music has surrounded us whether it was from our parents singing us lullabies or from some sort of toy that played music we can say that musical melodies have helped shape or lives one way or another. Once we start growing up and figuring out who we are our musical preferences change; some people like classical and some like punk. We start to befriend people who like the same music as us and eventually we may attend a musical event. Our lives somewhat revolve around the music that we listen to.
Music is an art and a wonderful gift to human race. It soothes, stimulates and makes us feel happy. It affects our moods in many different ways from lullaby to war cry for changes in the society. Music is actually distinct to different people. Above all, it has a transformational importance that is captured in its art and nature. Music draws our emotions and it has an impact of bridging different cultures across the continents. Slave songs were very vital channels through which all kind of information was conveyed both positive and negative.
Musicians have claimed song writing is their therapy. By it’s very nature, the process of song writing can be both freeing and emotionally challenging on a writer. Song “text often provides an early experience of how to symbolically represent the world, and of how we can use metaphors to understand the meaning of what is happening to us” (Baker et al. 9). Lyrics articulate the values and beliefs of people, which weave their way into the lives of others. In the midst of song writing, an important phenomenon is taking place: the writer is communicating and sharing their thoughts in an intimate way, much like how psychological counseling is seen and used today.
“Songs are not artistic.” Compared to some poetry, that statement can be very true. But looking deeper into the topic and looking at more songs and poetry, it will be observed that that is not always the case. Despite frequent belief, not all current, modern music is filled with unintellectual lyrics, especially those from the works of Twenty One Pilots. As a result of having a large quantity of metaphors, repetition, and complex layout, “Guns For Hands” by Twenty One Pilots is more artistic than “Life Is Fine” by Langston Hughes.
A person can do more than just dance to music; they clean, laugh, sing, cry, and make some of the greatest memories while enjoying music. Music can take us back in time to past memories, whether they are good or bad. It can make us think of different phases of our life. Just hearing one song can take us back years. It can make us think of a certain person at a particular part in time. The words and lyrics in songs have a way of relating to some people. (White) (Lyon, Suzanne)
Music is one of the few things that has remained constant through the centuries this world has existed. Not only does music provide entertainment, it also has several effects linked to it. Music allows emotions of happiness and sadness to arise. From those emotions, physical effects, negative or positive, can occur. Music has a profound effect on the emotional, social, intellectual, and physical aspects of a person.
The unusual tones and the human voices cover our critical thinking in a beautiful flow of instruments and lyrics. Which makes soul music so useful for a songwriter when writing a song to sway his listeners, for the songwriter can have a strong hand in changing
Music is a powerful medium in which artists can express themselves freely. This can come in many forms such as: Rock, Hip-Hop, Country, Pop. Whatever the genre, they all communicate a message to the listeners. The message can be as simple as entertainment and enjoying the music, or it can be something impactful like an idea or change that needs to be voiced. The meaning can be further enhanced through visual representation.
Through music we are able to comprehend someone’s personality, their views, their culture, and who they are as an overall person. The music you listen to is a reflection of who you are and your own personal thoughts. As I reflect on the music I listen to I came to the conclusion that I gravitate towards songs that depict the emotions we feel through lyrics while being able to relate it to my own personal experiences.
