Asteroid impact, a recurring fear of many, though technically* impossible. To initially clarify Asteroids and meteorites aren’t the same; an asteroid is small body orbiting the sun, whereas a meteor enters the Earth’s atmosphere and a meteorite strikes the surface.
However, a meteor impact is a very common occurrence; but it is extremely rare for significantly sized impacts to occur. On average; there is a 1mm diameter meteorite impact every 30 seconds, a 1 meter diameter object every year, 100 meter diameter object every 10,000 and 10km diameter object every 100,000,000 years (Nelson 2014).
*It really is technicality. and ‘asteroid impact’ can be both technically correct or incorrect dependant on circumstance.

While point releases can be dangerous and should be avoided, slab avalanches are much more catastrophic and account for most of the backcountry avalanche disasters involving humans. “The term ‘explode’ hardly does this event justice…” (pge 7) Yes this short but unsettling story “Chixculub” by T. Coraghessan Boyle starts out by talking about a comet. Throughout the story, it switches between the comet, and family that gets a disturbing call in the middle of the night. As the story continues, the comet and the downcast family become closely relatable by the end. As the Chixculub comet gets closer to earth, the family’s daughter hits closer to their heart as they find out she got in a terrible accident. Consequently talking about comets, something in this story that sticks out to me was that things hit harder than one may think.

Then, a blanket of dust and debris would blanket the earth and block the sun's light. This would occur for hundreds of years and the climate would be disrupted. Global killer no matter where it hits. When it comes to cars, there are plenty of safety features incorporated by manufactures to ensure a smooth and safe ride. Some of these features seat belts, airbags, and antilock brakes. Nowadays, there have been great improvements to technology within cars to aid in the avoidance of collisions altogether. Examples of these technologies include blind spot detection, backup cameras, 360-degree cameras, and autonomous driving. Many of these newer safety features are there to avoid collisions. However, whenever a collision does occur, there is not much there to protect passengers in the rear of the car.
