Rousseau and Constant both has different preferences on freedom that modern individuals are able to enjoy. Rousseau thinks people should put public life before private life, and Constant prioritizes private life over public life. In this paper I argue that Constant’s understanding of freedom is more valuable, because of our historical moments such that we are able to enjoy modern liberty, also it is more compatible with our life style than ancient liberty. Rawls’ thinks that the modern liberty is the kind of freedom modern individuals are able to enjoy. He states that there are two things that are appropriate to democratic society, and they are justice and tolerance. Rawls presents us with two principles of justice that the citizens have to follow in order to be truly free; they are equality of rights and inequality benefits least advantaged member of society. In order to be completely free and exist in the society all you need to do is follow these two basic and most important rule. Furthermore, Rawls mentions that there is so much diversity in our democratic society, that we are more of society of strangers. You are free to do whatever you please and free to take responsibility for yourself, you are your own validation. With that he also brought out, since the institutions follow the two principles of justice, citizens can put their trust in them. As Constant mentioned earlier that “Commerce supplies their needs, satisfies their desires, without the intervention of the authorities.” Commerce liberates individuals by creating credit, but also putting authority over everything and everyone. Which includes the government, because the government need money to function their power is restricted by credit, as well as, limiting the government by how much they spend. Since they are so busy with dealing with their debt situation they are not on our case all the time, then we get to have and enjoy our individual freedom. Once we get the taste for commerce, and the freedom that comes along with it then we will never want to go back the ancient times.
