The consumption of pork in the Jewish and Muslim tradition is forbidden because it is an unclean animal. In the Jewish religion, the Bible states two requirements for an animal to be fit to eat. That is that one, the animal must chew their cud and two, the animal must have split hooves. Although, pigs do have split hooves but fail to eat their cud they may not be consumed by Jews. Chapter 14:8-10 from Deuteronomy states, “and the pig, because it has a split hoof, but does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. You shall neither eat of their flesh nor touch their carcass.” Jews also believe that pigs are predators and are commanded not to consume swine because of it’s cruel nature. The Quran states that pork is haram, meaning forbidden. It also states that an individual can only eat it if they are starving and the only thing to eat is pork. When I asked my Muslim friend if she did not eat pork because it was considered a dirty animal; she responded that is was impure because it rolls around in mud and eats its own feces along with the feces of other animals, eventually contaminating the land that other crops are farmed on. Consequently, the farming of pigs has a detrimental effect on the environment. The waste from pig farming releases pathogens into the air, polluting the area around; it also contributes to groundwater pollution.
