I analyzed two crime dramas and two news stories, then compiled the data. Our objective was to watch these dramas and stories and get information from them. The information that we were supposed to get out of it was the demographics of offenders and victims, type of offense, graphic depiction of offense, victim and offender, and portrayal of victim and offender. The two crime dramas I watched were from Law and Order. I selected Season 11 episode 7 and 8. They were selected at random and only because they were the two that were on when I went to the channel. The two news stories I chose were older news stories, but popped back up on the recent news because of new found information.
While watching the season 11 episode 7 of Law and Order, it

On 1997 four men were convicted of the rape and murder of Michelle Basko. The four men were Joe Dick, Daniel Williams, Eric Wilson, and Derek Tice. Detective Robert Ford believed that the four U.S. navy men were all guilty of the crime. One of the victim’s friend claimed that Daniel Williams, was Michelle Basko’s murderer. Based on the information provided by Basko’s friend, Ford suspected that William was guilty. With that, the series of harsh interrogations led by detective Robert Ford began. The more information someone has about crime the more prepared they can be to deal with the victim, evaluate programs that help prevent crime. There are several official sources used UCR, NCVS, NIBRS that are used. There are pros and cons to each source and the following information will include some of the positive and some of the negatives points of each report. Newspaper headline: ‘KEITH MILLHOUSE MURDERED IN MANSION.” is across every paper in Rosewood County. Keith Millhouse is.. Or I guess was the richest man in Rosewood. The man had a heart of gold, only wanting to help others in need. Somehow, on a cold October day, though, Keith Millhouse was found strangled, and beaten in his mansion.
A hit was put out on Taylor and Zavala by leaders of the Mexican drug cartel because they were becoming a nuisance. This hit was carried out by the same Latino gang members who had previously done a drive-by shooting of a rival gang. The officers were enticed towards their imminent deaths with a car chase which was set up by the Latino gang members. This chase led them towards an apartment complex which was rigged with many gang members and artillery to ensure that neither Taylor nor Zavala would survive. The two were ambushed but decided that gunning their way out was their best option. When the officers made it to an alley they were met by another Latino gang member who fired at Taylor and Zavala, hitting Taylor once in the chest before being shot and killed by Zavala. Zavala went to aid Taylor who appeared to be quickly dying and called out for help. Before police back up arrived the original Latino gang members found Zavala in the...
The murder of JonBenet Ramsey was very shocking and caused a huge investigation that is yet unsolved. Family was one of the things that contributed to JonBenet’s murder. JonBenet Ramsey is a very special six-year-old girl with a successful family. She was a little pageant girl with blond curly hair and blue eyes; she was a very well known competitor since she had won many pageants (SV;SV) (Schneider). Her mother, Patsy Ramsey, was a former beauty queen; her father, John Ramsey, was a millionaire businessman (SV; SV) (Bardsley, and Bellamy).
In Walt Harrington’s True Detective, the article centers on the character Victor Smith, better known as V.I., who is a detective who investigates cases of homicide. This article was effective in allowing the readers to understand the perspective of a homicide detective and the many cases they undergo. However, it was difficult to find a connection with this article, because I have no experience with homicide or murder cases apart from what I have seen from the media and TV shows. I was still able to enjoy True Detective, as it described the daily lives of the detectives from Homicide North.
The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) is information that is gathered by the U.S Census Bureau. Unlike UCR this information is not given by law enforcement officials, but by a household survey that is conducted about twice a year. When the survey is being commenced they place the crimes into two different categories; person crimes and property crimes. NCVS has four objectives when obtaining information; “(1) to develop detailed information about the victims and consequences of crime, (2) to estimate the number and types of crimes not reported to the police, (3) to provide uniform measures of selected typed of crimes, and (4) to permit comparisons over time and types of areas.” (NACJD)
During the night of June 12, 1994, a series of murders were committed. Many assumed that O.J. Simpson had beaten, battered, and murdered his ex-wife and her current boyfriend. Nicole Brown Simpson’s body was found in a pool of blood with gashes in her upper body and throat. Ron Goldman, her boyfriend, stabbed twenty-two times, was found next to her against a garden fence. Detectives discovered blood in several locations, including the stairs. “Simpson insisted he never hit, slapped, or beat Nicole, and that the contents of her diary, in which she wrote that he hit her, and her complaints to the police were lies” (Gleick, Lafferty).
July 15, 1999, was an ordinary night for Kristopher Lohrmeyer as he left work at the Colorado City Creamer, a popular ice cream parlor. Kristopher had no idea that his life was about to end. When Michael Brown, 17, Derrick Miller and Andrew (Andy) Medina, 15, approached Kristopher and demanded his money and his car keys. Before the boys knew it shots had been fired and Kristopher was dead. About an hour after the fatal shooting of Kristopher Lohrmeyer, all three men were in custody and telling their version of the night’s events. Michael and Derrick who had run away after the shooting confessed to police and named Andy as the shooter. According to the three boy’s testimony, they had only recently met and needed away to get some quick cash, so they developed a carjacking scheme and headed to Andy’s house to pick up 2 stolen handguns. The three boys were uneducated and had spent most of their time on the streets in search of drugs. The judge ruled that they would be held without bail and there was probable cause to charge them all with first-degree murder (Thrown Away, 2005).
The man then pulled a gun and assaulted the boy, he didn't shoot him but by forcing him to lie on the ground while he raped and sexually assaulted the young girl. Three weeks later he is pulled over for running a stop sign. Then the park ranger noticed a resemblance between Raymond and the sketch of the crime. When the park ranger brought him in a couple days later in 10-15 minutes the kids pick him out as the guy who did it("Raymond Towler"). Lastly he is exonerated after serving 30
There are multiple crime television shows that are based on a true story or fiction. A well known television show is Law and Order Special Victims Unit, which deals with rape and assault cases. This particular episode deals with a domestic violence case between a retired football star, AJ Martin, and his girlfriend, Paula Bryant. I will be using the National Crime Victimization Survey, which is an interview with the members in a household about reported and unreported crime that occurred within the last six months. “NVCS provides information of characteristics of victims, including age, race, ethnicity, gender, marital status and household income” (Truman and Morgan). Official statistics like the NCVS would be used for comparing its demographics
Media portrayal of crime and criminal justice has become incredibly widespread in the last decade, with crime often considered both a source of news and entertainment. As a source of entertainment, crime and criminal justice have emerged as central themes across various sources of media. Most individuals do not have any direct experience with the criminal justice system, so their only source of information on this topic is the media. Particularly in television shows, portrayals of crime and criminal justice can be seen in everything from courtroom dramas to nightly news programs. Indeed, the popularity of crime shows has lead to some of television’s most enduring series, such as Law and Order and CSI. Because of this, fictional
The school's undercover narcotics officer, Randy, was killed in the faculty parking lot. A car pulled up, and a black tinted window rolled down. The passenger in the back seat shot him once in the head with a handgun, then the car sped away. Randy was killed instantly, and the people in the car were never caught.
For decades now, including the years 1994 and 1995, the time of the O.J. Simpson murder trial, American law enforcement has used two major data sources to measure crime. First, there is the Uniform Crime Report or UCR. The UCR is compiled data from reported crimes, it is a very accurate system used for murder and those crimes that cannot go unnoticed. Next, we have The National Crime Victim Survey or NCVS which is a unanimous survey, better at accounting for the crimes that may not get reported, crimes such as rape or assault.
