Essays in Bacon’s and Johnson’s era are based primarily on opinion and judgment affecting the outcome and structure of the essay. It is evident that modern day essays are comprised of truth and fact allowing educated reasoning, making them more comprehendible. In contrast, essays from the 1500’s to the 1700’s focus more on one’s personal opinion affecting the outcome. Also modern day essays are well structured compared to historic essays making them straight-forward. James Baldwin’s “notes of a native son” (Baldwin, 1955) is a number of essay entailing truth and fact. This essay describes the childhood struggles of a Native African American growing up in America (Baldwin, 1955). Baldwin’s essays is based purely on fact and truth which allows
for greater knowledge gained by the audience. In this essay it is well structured and knowledge is clearly gained, allowing for a clear understanding. In contrast to Baldwin’s essay Francis bacons essay ‘Of Revenge’ (Bacon, 1625)exemplifies that essays in 1600’s lack clear structure and are primarily based on opinion and judgement. ‘Of Revenge’ (Bacon, 1625) clearly highlights how historic essays lack clarity leading to a varied interpretation gained. Revenge and many historic essays include various amounts of confusion in the meaning. In Bacon’s essay ‘Revenge’ he creates confusion through phrases such as “even with his enemy; but passing” and “there is no law to remedy; but then let a man take heed the revenge’. These phrases create confusion and highlight that opinions can affect the knowledge gained. When comparing Baldwin’s essays and Bacon’s essays it is evident good structure and truth makes an essay more comprehendible improving usefulness. Therefore it is evident that modern day essays are far superior to bacons or Johnson’s essays as they are factual pieces of structured writing allowing for enhancement of knowledge.
Literature is written in many ways and styles. During his time, Frederick Douglass’s works and speeches attracted many people’s attention. With the amount of works and speeches Douglass has given, it has influenced many others writers to express themselves more freely. Though Douglass lived a rigorous childhood, he still made it the best that he could, with the guidance and teaching of one of his slave owner’s wife he was able to read and write, thus allowing him to share his life stories and experiences. Douglass’s work today still remain of great impact and influence, allowing us to understand the reality of slavery, and thus inspiring many others to come out and share for others to understand.
...the social injustices many of the Negro community faced as wrong. An argumentative manner is most effective mainly due to its ability to present both sides of argument and never being considered bias to one side since both are being presented clearly. Though one side is usually favored by the writer, it is equally balanced in that the audience isn’t fooled into thinking or believing one side is fully clear of faults and errors. Since both sides are presented, one is left to choose which position to take. Furthermore, an argumentative text tends to inflict more of a response to the reader, so that he/she will tend to side with one position or the other. Either way, the reader is now a part of the issue at hand, making them directly a participant of the topic. This is effective in that it makes the audience or reader accountable for his or her actions and beliefs.
Although Thoreau and King both correspondingly address these topics of morality and justice throughout their essays, their essays are in no way similar in writing styles, tones, and/or goals. King speaks to his readers about the injustice that is being served to African Americans specifically. He uses an emotional appeal as he pleads his readers to take action to end segregation. This emotional appeal combined with his optimism for freedom sets him and his writing different from that of Thoreau’s. Thoreau’s essay on the other hand, is largely critical of the unfair American Government. Unlike King, Thoreau worriedly speaks to his readers in a distressed, aggravated tone as he reprimands them for following unjust laws. Both Twain and Douglass use formal diction and grammar, fluidly switch between the objective and subjective tones, and include both positive and negative experiences in their narratives. However, Twain and Douglass also use differing techniques such drawing on their different cultural experiences in the south, ending their narratives on different emotional notes, and writing from an independent perspective versus an inclusive perspective. When it all comes down to it, one of the greatest intellectual battles U.S. history was the legendary disagreement between Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois. This intellectual debate sparked the interest of the Northerners as well as the racist whites that occupied the south. This debate was simply about how the blacks, who just gained freedom from slavery, should exist in America with the white majority. Even though Washington and DuBois stood on opposite sides of the fence they both agreed on one thing, that it was a time for a change in the treatment of African Americans. I chose his topic to write about because I strongly agree with both of the men’s ideas but there is some things about their views that I don’t agree with. Their ideas and views are the things that will be addressed in this essay.

It comes in the form of t.v., radio, newspapers, magazines etc. The media has a way of portraying a story in a way that they want it to be seen by audiences. In other words, the media only tells us only what they want us to hear; which, may or may not be the truth or include the entire story. The media is always looking for the next best story and the competition to be the first one on the scene can be intense. Narrative is a form of writing used by writers to convey their experiences to an audience. James Baldwin is a renowned author for bringing his experience to literature. He grew up Harlem in the 1940’s and 1950’s, a crucial point in history for America due to the escalading conflict between people of different races marked by the race riots of Harlem and Detroit. This environment that Baldwin grew up in inspires and influences him to write the narrative “Notes of a Native Son,” which is based on his experience with racism and the Jim-Crow Laws. The narrative is about his father and his influence on Baldwin’s life, which he analyzes and compares to his own experiences. When Baldwin comes into contact with the harshness of America, he realizes the problems and conflicts he runs into are the same his father faced, and that they will have the same affect on him as they did his father.
James Baldwin is one of the premier essayists of his time. He draws on his experiences in a straightforward, unapologetic manner, which helps achieve his purpose in The Fire Next Time. His style elucidates his arguments for racial harmony and for the understanding of other religions.
The essay “Notes of a Native Son” takes place at a very volatile time in history. The story was written during a time of hate and discrimination toward African Americans in the United States. James Baldwin, the author of this work is African American himself. His writing, along with his thoughts and ideas were greatly influenced by the events happening at the time. At the beginning of the essay, Baldwin makes a point to mention that it was the summer of 1943 and that race riots were occurring in Detroit. The story itself takes place in Harlem, a predominantly black area experiencing much of the hatred and inequalities that many African-Americans were facing throughout the country. This marks the beginning of a long narrative section that Baldwin introduces his readers to before going into any analysis at all.
When comparing two essays, there are many different aspects that the reader can look at to make judgments and opinions. In the two essays that I choose, MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. 'Letter from Birmingham Jail', and FREDERICK DOUGLAS'S 'From Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave,' there were many similarities, but also many differences. Some of them being, the context, style, structure and tone. Many times when readings or articles are being compared, people over look the grammatical and structural elements, and just concentrate on the issues at hand. I believe it is important to evaluate both.
The reader is first introduced to the idea of Douglass’s formation of identity outside the constraints of slavery before he or she even begins reading the narrative. By viewing the title page and reading the words “The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, written by himself” the reader sees the advancement Douglass made from a dependent slave to an independent author (Stone 134). As a slave, he was forbidden a voice with which he might speak out against slavery. Furthermore, the traditional roles of slavery would have had him uneducated—unable to read and incapable of writing. However, by examining the full meaning of the title page, the reader is introduced to Douglass’s refusal to adhere to the slave role of uneducated and voiceless. Thus, even before reading the work, the reader knows that Douglass will show “how a slave was made a man” through “speaking out—the symbolic act of self-definition” (Stone 135).
The works of Bradstreet, Adams and Wheatley in a sense distill the hardness of colonial life, though each having come from various degrees of perceived privilege at the time. Each had a unique existence in the life of the prevailing culture, though the subject and intended audience of the writing of each tends to put into focus the narrative of the times but addressed to an intimate. In reading all three, it was quite evident that the personal struggles for first survival, followed by recognition from their inner circle, combining these two into a commentary on the larger world. Wheatley speaking of her experience as a house slave, herself a revolutionary and first lady, and Bradstreet speaking to being a new immigrant settler. Out of these three writers Adams is the only one who had been born in the colonies, the other two were brought.
Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech inspired a generation of black people to never give up and instilled a bitter sense of guilt in thousands of white Americans who were ashamed of their actions. Even hearing this speech in today’s society gives many people goose bumps as it continues to promote people against racial segregation of any kind along with endorsing social colorblindness. King’s effective structure along with his usage of George Campbell’s rhetorical faculties intended to help connect with the audience by helping to: inform and argue his reasons against racial inequality, provide aesthetic delight from the location and of the description of a new society, to affect the feelings of his audience by emphasizing on patriotic words and holistic intentions, and urging action from his listener by warning them not to let this treatment continue one more day. This speech effectively serves as a masterpiece of rhetoric as it persuaded hundreds of thousands of people to support the blacks instead of treating them
When analyzing a written text there are a couple of things to look at. Does the author validate what they are writing? This question can be asked in order to figure out the different qualities of the essay itself. How does the author relay the massage? This is another question that can be asked from this analysis. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. explains his message very clearly in his text, The World House. Dr. King provides a lot of information to back his ideas and main thesis. He uses examples when he describes what he wants you to know. He is able to relay his message to the proper audience, which happens to be everyone in the world, but specifically to the African American people when he wrote the piece. He is able to set the tone and keep it from the beginning to the end. Dr. King is able to use audience, tone and language to relay his message.
