Throughout history, there have been many influences on the human race, whether good or bad. Actions of these human beings ring through time and continue to have an impact on those living today. In this past century, the human race has seen two prominent men stand out in the categories of good and bad, Mahatma Gandhi and Osama bin Laden. Gandhi and bin Laden have many similarities in background and leadership, but it is their difference in impact that affect the billions of people alive today. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, known as Mahatma Gandhi, was born in October 1869 in a city located in India, which was under the rule of the British crown. His family was well known throughout the country for their work on the palaces of the royal family. Bin Laden was raised in a home that followed a strict moral and religious code, until his parents separated. Him and his mother moved in with her new husband, and Osama started thriving at one of the most prestigious high schools in the area. In his early teens, bin Laden was recognized as an exemplary and outstanding student. Because of his performance, he was invited to join a study group full of esteemed young men. The group was organized to memorize the Koran, but eventually, fell from that original purpose, and instead fell into the teachings of the violent jihad. Influenced by a small sect in the Islam religion, the teacher began to instruct the young men on the “importance of instituting a pure, Islamic law” (Osama bin Laden), as well as becoming very observant in keeping the holy word, “even if it meant supporting death and destruction” (Osama bin Laden). Because of the teachings, the boys began to accept the ideas of jihad, spread their ideas throughout the school, and influence others to learn more. Osama was wed at the end of his teenage years to his cousin, graduated from school, and started at a nearby university to acquire a degree in public administration. Soon after receiving his degree, bin Laden rushed to help Afghanistan, who had been invaded by the Soviet Union.
