New Criticism is described to focus on values on the individual’s work’s meaning. This approach which is a close analytic reading of the text, is the approach I will be using. I chose to analyze both stories Life of a sensuous women and Hedda Gabbler. I will apply these texts to compare/contrast in terms of character and how it affects the themes in the story. Character are one of the important factor in making a story, without character a story could not exist. In both stories, these characters have a major effect on the story. In Life of a Sensuous Woman, there is an aging woman who tells the story behind her life. She was a beautiful woman who love in lust and the quest for love. Then we have Hedda Gabler, a main character in Hedda Gabler. Hedda Gabbler is the daughter of a general who is married to George Tesman. She is an intelligent, beautiful, selfish, dishonest, and an unpredictable woman. Hedda Gabler grew up in an upper- middle class life but now she lives in a lower- middle class life, which she is not used to in life. This class difference between Hedda and George is a collision of expectations of them. Hedda is a person who only looks after herself and does not care about anybody but herself especially individual’s well- being, feelings, and state of mind. Also, the paper will discuss how ignoring oneself and one’s desires is self-destructive, as seen throughout the story as the woman’s condition worsens while she is in isolation, in the room with the yellow wallpaper, and at the same time as her thoughts are being oppressed by her husband and brother. Hedda Gabler is a text in which a very domineering society drives a woman to her suicidal death. Many argue that Hedda’s death is an act of courage, as rebellion against the rules of the society, however other believe that Hedda’s actions show cowardice, as she is unable to cope with the harsh reality of the her situation. Hedda's singular goal throughout the play has been to prove that she is still in possession of free will. Hedda shows many examples of both courage and cowardice throughout the play, differing to the character she is with.
Hedda’s symbolic age--twenty-nine--forced her to get married because society’s age limit for marriage was catching up to her; she needed a stable and secure arrangement to avoid any scandals. However, by marrying George, Hedda was trying to get what she wanted the most: control. Attempting to maintain material wealth and status was her way of doing so; both become obvious in Hedda’s complaints. She wants another piano because the old one “doesn’t really fit in with all these other things,” and asks for a butler and horse, knowing she cannot have these things (232;247). More importantly, Hedda is trying to recover the previous status she had when she talks to George about how “It was part of our bargain that we’d live in society--that we’d keep a great house--” (247). This becomes the ultimate proof that Hedda’s love for George is fake. The marriage was a bargain; therefore, it seems that Hedda is only preoccupied with the betterment of herself. She does not care for others, not even for George. Hedda is consumed in her materialistic world, and cannot realize that this world will never actually materialize. It is said that this book is considered as one of the most famous horror novels, if not the most famous one. The Gothic descriptions in the novel are very prominent at the beginning. The portrayal of the countryside of Transylvania, of the ruined Dracula Castle, etc, all provide the effect of horror in the sense of spooky and gloomy atmosphere, which you can obtain close at hand. Everything is so obvious. The originally beautiful scenes are changed by the writer¡¯s magnification of some specific details which provide certain effect on the readers. All of the above reminds how one¡¯s personal feelings can alter their attitudes towards what they see or what they experience. Sometimes when you are sad, everything look so depressing. It is like the whole world is against you. The sunset could be a fantastic scene when you are filled with joy but an extra source of sorrow when you are not in the mood. The characters in the play are consistent with the stereotypical ones of the Victorian era. Women were expected to get married and stay at home, being seen as unintelligent and fragile. Hedda Gabler is neither of things, thus emphasizing Henrik Ibsen’s point of female oppression in the Victorian era. Hedda’s character does not present the typical affectionate trait a woman would have towards her husband; The idea that women were supposed to get marriage and have children early during the Victorian era. The male role was expected to be extreme dominance over the woman, and to be the bread winner. Henrik Ibsen’s reflection of the Victorian era in the story, Hedda Gabler emphasizes on the social standards imposed upon women and men. The play questions the power dynamics distributed between the two genders, the concept that a woman’s proper role in her marriage is to tend her husband, while the man’s role is to provide for the family and uphold its reputation. Henrik Ibsen presents two characters who are victims of this drastic social code and the measures of both characters have to take in order to structure their ideals around a strict society. When both characters ideals conflict with the social mores of society, the result is often unsatisfying or tragic. For example, Hedda’s lust for power in the story is a trait not often found in women during the Victorian period. The role of power is reserved for only the men in Victorian society. In order to behold power, Hedda sacrifices her stereotypical image as a woman. Hedda does not display the typical loving wife role, but rather adopts a vicious and manipulating female character trait. Raised by a general (Ibsen 1444), Hedda has the character of a leader and is wholly unsuited to the role of "suburban housewife" (1461). Since she is unable to have the authority she craves, she exercises power by manipulating her husband George. She tells Thea, "I want the power to shape a man's destiny" (1483). Hedda's unsuitability for her domestic role is also shown by her impatience and evasiveness at any reference to her pregnancy. She confides to Judge Brack, "I've no leanings in that direction" (1471).
In the case of Henrik Ibsen’s plays A Doll’s House and Hedda Gabler, the two main female characters have their own reputations to worry about. Nora Helmer and Hedda Gabler are two characters who are similar in their actions, but the motivations behind them differ slightly. Nora is involved in a scandalous situation because of a crime committed on behalf of her family. Hedda is not directly involved in any wrongdoing, she is only an accomplice to a potential scandal. However, both women are terrified of the consequences of these situations. Not only do they have reputations that could be damaged but they have husbands, and in Nora’s case, children, to think about. There is considerable pressure on Nora and Hedda to keep up appearances as devoted wives, as society would have them portrayed. Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen is a play about Hedda, a woman living in Christiana, Norway in the 1860’s who manipulates others, but her efforts produce negative results. During this era, there were Victorian values and ethics which were followed by almost all. The main values comprised of women always marrying and, their husbands taking care of them. Women were always accompanied by chaperone and were not allowed to be left alone with an unfamiliar male. It was Bertrand Russell who said “It is preoccupation with possessions, more than anything else, that prevents us from living freely and nobly”. This quote brings light to how Hedda acts on a daily basis where she is driven by possessions. In Hedda Gabler the theme of internal pressure is portrayed throughout the play. This can be seen through Hedda’s greed and materialism, her uncaring attitude and her manipulative personality.
The character of Hedda Gabler centers around society and social issues. Her high social rank is indicated from the beginning, as Miss Tesman says of Hedda, "General Gabler's daughter. What a life she had in the general's day!" (Ibsen 672). Upon Hedda's first appearance, she makes many snobbish remarks. First, she turns up her nose at George's special handmade slippers. Later she insults Aunt Julie's new hat, pretending to mistake it for the maid's. Hedda seems to abhor everything about George Tesman and his bourgeoisie existence. She demands much more class than he has been able to provide her, for she was the beautiful, charming daughter of General Gabler and deserved nothing but the finest.
