The Joseph story, as reflected in both the Bible and Qur’an accounts, offer both similarities and differences between the two. Joseph, the son of Jacob, along the patriarchal line of Abraham, had a set of dreams in which one dream depicted the sun, moon, and eleven stars were bowing to him. Although the dream was described in the same manner in both accounts, in the Qur’an, Joseph’s father pleaded with him to not tell his brother, or they will plot evil against you (Damrosch & Pike, 2009, Vol. B, p. 353). There is no mention of this predestined knowledge of the brother’s plot in the Bible. Additionally, scent is included as a literary device to implicate a spiritual reality as shown in the inclusion of the shirt in narrative transitions (Lawson, 2012, p. 231). The indication of the implication of the shirt as a transitional narrative term appear when the garment exonerates Joseph from the crime of sin and lust, and when he gives his shirt to his brothers to take it back to Canaan to his blind and grief-stricken father. When Joseph’s shirt is placed over Jacob’s face, his vision is restored, implicating the acquisition of spiritual reality that occurred with the scent of Joseph’s shirt (Lawson, 2012, p. 232). Additionally, Joseph’s shirt was torn from behind when he was fleeing the woman who was trying to seduce him in the Qur’an’s depiction, but in the biblical account expresses the woman’s antics that he left his cloak beside her, which infuriates the master, who puts Joseph in jail (Damrosch & Pike, 2009, Vol. A, p. 163-164).
In both accounts, the brothers realized their wrongdoings and asked for forgiveness from Joseph. The Qur’an’s account indicated Joseph’s understanding of the Lord’s graciousness in his own life, with his interpretation ability, and asked if God may forgive them.
