He took first year university classes at Luther College since he had a position as a laboratory assistant for a man named Paul Liefeld. While he lived in Canada, he studied at the University of Saskatchewan. During his time at the University of Saskatchewan, he studied with Gerhard Herzberg who won the 1971 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Then, in 1940, Taube received his PhD in chemistry at UC Berkeley, also known as the University of California, Berkeley. The focus of his graduate research …show more content…

After graduation, he worked as a teacher at Berkeley for only a year. In 1942, he received citizenship for the United States since he was originally born in Canada. Throughout his career, he has worked as a professor in various universities. He taught at places such as Cornell University, University of Chicago, and Stanford University. Two times he was the chairman of the Chemistry Department in 1972 to 1974 and 1978 to 1979. He was also in the National Defense Research Committee while World War II was taking place. Taube experimented with isotopes in the late 1940s. He did this in order to present that metal ions could form chemical bonds with many water molecules while in a water solution. He also wanted to show that the geometric arrangement and stability of the newly made hydrates varied widely depending on the identity and oxidation state of the ion. A hydrate is a compound where molecules of water are chemically bound to another compound or
