How do you know if you are truly happy? What is needed for someone to acquire true happiness? Both Montag from Fahrenheit 451 (F451) by Ray Bradbury and Truman from The Truman Show directed by Peter Weir come from a dystopian society, but once they realize what their life could be like outside of their world they try to escape from it. Discontent is what Montag, Truman, and our society feel, but when knowledge and the truth reveal true happiness is felt. Discontent was very common in Montag Truman and even our own society. Montag feels a lot of discontent at the beginning of the book, especially when it comes to his wife Mildred. “Funny, how funny, not to remember where or when you met your husband or wife.” (Bradbury, 40). When Clarisse asks Montag questions about his life like “Are you happy?” (Bradbury, 10) Montag starts to realize the truth about his life. He was not happy. “He was not happy. He was not happy with it. He said the words to himself. He recognized this as the “true state of affairs” (Bradbury, 9). Clarisse leading Montag to the truth is what made him realize he is not happy and wants to change his life. Sylvia told Montag this is also what led him to want to change his life. Sylvia tells Truman that everything is fake when they are on the beach together and Truman never forgot that, which is why he wanted to leave his town and go to Fiji. Truth is important to our society because it allows us to make fair decisions and judgments. Last year I was told not to judge a person if I don't know the story because when you don't know everything your judgment is not accurate. The truth is important because without it there would be no accurate judgment.
