Happiness is a struggle for Montag in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 and for Truman in Peter Weirs’ The Truman Show. They are both the main characters in their world, it is a dystopian society where everything is ruled by the government. For Truman, everything is fake, everyone in the small town of Seabrook was an actor and in Montags’ society, the government was in charge of how the people think. Montag in F451 is discontent because he starts questioning his society. He meets a girl named Clarisse who gives him thoughts about what society was like before. “They walked still further and the girl said, ‘Is it true that long ago firemen put fires out instead of starting them?’ ‘No. Houses have always been fireproof, take my word for it.’ ‘Strange. …show more content…

This shows that Clarisse is trying to show Montag what it was like before. Montag begins questioning if this is really what the firemen did before. Montag becomes even more discontent when he sees a woman burn herself just because she doesn't want to be without her books. “‘There must be something in books, things we can’t imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there. You don’t stay for nothing’” (Bradbury, page 65). This shows that Montag is very discontent as he tries to find a way to understand why the woman wanted to burn the books instead of leaving the house. Montag is frustrated with Mildred and tries to read the forbidden books to her, but she doesn't want to listen to him. “‘Nobody listens any more.
