Tragic moments often lead individuals to continue with their life since death is an acquaintance and we will all obtain it one day. Mankind had proceeded to failure due to not containing an ounce of caring in their bones. This is interrupted throughout Ovid, Brueghel, Auden, and Williams’ showing the failure that was designated to the people who didn’t care enough for Icarus. Ovid’s original adaptation of Daedalus and Icarus doesn’t necessarily distribute any sense of caring towards Icarus’ fall. Ovid mainly tells the readers that Icarus disobeyed his father’s directions. The poem states, “My boy, take care to wing your course along the middle air; if low, the surges wet your flagging plumes; if high, the sun the melting wax consumes.” Ovid

Both writers are pessimistic in their views of humanity and are acutely aware of the natural world. The representations of their characters show humans who believe that they are strong and can ably survive, but these characters many times overestimate themselves which can lead to an understanding of their own mortality as they face down death.

In Ovid’s myth the main focus was Deadalus, while Brueghel’s painting did not even depict Daedalus and even the title’s focus was on Icarus as it is called “the fall of Icarus”. Ovid repeatedly uses foreshadowing to create a sense of sympathy to Icarus and to show the tragic end of Daedalus’ ambition. Ovid uses foreshadowing in order to show that Icarus was a victim of his own curiosity, when he says “not knowing he was dealing with his own downfall” (pg.187). Foreshadowing was also repeated when Daedalus’ “cheeks were wet with tears and his hands trembled. He kissed his son (good-bye, if he had known it)” (pg.188). The main theme in the myth relates to Daedalus' vain attempts to caution his son, encouraging Icarus to take the middle road: “I warn you, Icarus, fly a middle course” (pg.188). Ovid’s diction shows the gravity of the situation as he chooses the words “I warn you”. Daedalus further tires to teach his son by telling him “don’t go too low, or water will weigh you down; don’t’ go too high, or the sun’s fire will burn them” (pg.188). The Fall Of Icarus is a greek tale about a grand inventor/architect, named Daedalus, who was imprisoned in a labyrinth, sentenced by king Minos of Crete. However, he was not the only one who has been imprisoned. His son, Icarus, was also a victim of Minos’s judgement.
