Who doesn’t want to feel loved and valued in a relationship? For me, these are the two most important elements of a healthy and meaningful bond between two individuals. Relationships are partnerships. They require equal amounts of effort from both parties. Anne Bradstreet’s poem, “To My Dear and Loving Husband”, speaks about her experience in a relationship that she has found comfort and happiness in. This poem exudes a theme of contentment and satisfaction. The type of connection that Bradstreet speaks about in this poem is something I feel I have found in my relationship and I hope I can continue to cultivate in the future.
In this poem, the theme of contentment is clearly demonstrated. Bradstreet is sharing her feelings about her experience in a healthy relationship. She compares the different elements of her love to things that she believes it is greater than. Bradstreet has clearly found a tremendous amount of comfort in her relationship. She states, “I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold / Or all the riches than the east doth hold” (Bradstreet, 5-6). Bradstreet is aware that the love she has found is extremely rare

and special. She recognized that their connection is more meaningful than anything of monetary value. I relate to these feelings on a very personal level. The value that she speaks of finding in her relationship is the same I have found in my own relationship. While I may not be married, I am able to identify that my relationship is priceless. The type of marriage that she speaks of is something that I think all people aspire to have.
It appears that Bradstreet thinks no relationship could ever compare to hers. In her experience, her love for her husband could never be surpassed. Bradstreet feels no individual would ever be able to love their significant other more than she loves her husband. She explains, “If ever man were loved by a wife, then thee; / If ever wife was happy in a man, / compare with me ye women if you can” (Bradstreet, 2-4). I think that very person in a healthy relationship can relate to this feeling. If an individual is tremendously happy, they could never imagine a relationship being better. Everyone finds meaning and value in their own relationships. It is hard to picture a relationship being better than one that you have personally taken part in
creating. The connection that Bradstreet describes in this poem is something I believe I have found in my relationship and I aspire to continue improving in the future. Bradstreet had found peace and comfort in her relationship with her husband. She believes that their love is so strong it cannot be surpassed. I discovered that these feelings hold true in my own relationship. I am content in what I have found because feel the presence of love. While Bradstreet wrote this poem in 1678, I found that its theme still rings true today. Every person still aspires to find contentment and happiness in their own relationships. Everyone wants to feel loved.
Human beings are not isolated individuals. We do not wander through a landscape of trees and dunes alone, reveling in our own thoughts. Rather, we need relationships with other human beings to give us a sense of support and guidance. We are social beings, who need talk and company almost as much as we need food and sleep. We need others so much, that we have developed a custom that will insure company: marriage. Marriage assures each of us of company and association, even if it is not always positive and helpful. Unfortunately, the great majority of marriages are not paragons of support. Instead, they hold danger and barbs for both members. Only the best marriages improve both partners. So when we look at all three of Janie’s marriages, only her marriage to Teacake shows the support, guidance, and love.
A developed relationship can be interpreted as one where the couple is interdependent, tolerant, and dedicated. Equity allows a relationship to efficiently develop in this manner. Judith Viorst illustrates a poem depicting a couple’s struggles and their sacrifices for the other in “True Love”. In many points of the poem, the couple is compromising for the other’s flaws in order to avoid unnecessary conflicts. “I do not resent watching the Green Bay Packers / Even though I am philosophically opposed to football” (Stanza 1) is an example of the wife forcing herself
The first part in this poem, "If ever two were one" (1) sets us with expectations to continue with the reading. These words show that Bradstreet and her husband were really in love, that this love could unite two persons and make them one. Bradstreet and her husband think, act, and feel much like they are part of each other. The tone of this poem tells us that she is a very religious, because she speaks of praying and the heavens. We get the impression that she is a very dedicated person, to her family and to God. She...
Isn’t it any woman’s dream to have a husband slaving for her and heeding her every single word? Are you wondering why I love Tom? He is a robust, posh man with life running through his every vein. His words are always heeded by others with absolute carelessness. He gave me everything I wanted; this apartment, the little Airedale puppy, my expensive necklace and, of course, money.
I personally loved everything that this poem stood for. I liked that this poem had two average people at its center. They were not young or insanely beautiful, but they still showed how amazing love can be and how love goes beyond everything. When it comes down to it love has no gender, age, race, or time it is just about humans loving other humans. In this week’s chapter it is discussed how romance itself has a huge cultural impact and this poem definitely connects with this idea. This poem also follows the cliche of love. The way that love is blinding and will conquer all is presented in a real and believable way, but then it can also be considered unrelatable for some because how romance is set up to be and how high the standards are for true love. Furthermore, I like the idea of love going beyond age, beauty, and time but realistically for most people they will never experience a love so intense. People can though understand how what is portrayed in the media is not how everyone experiences love and that people who differ from this unrealistic standard can still be in love in their own intense beautiful way.

God; whereas Taylor wrote solely on his love for God. Bradstreet was a pioneer in the idea of writing about loving your husband and self. This was one of her greatest achievements and also greatest gifts to the world, even though it was not appropriate to write about such subjects she did anyway. The combination of Bradstreet and Taylors poetry about love prove to the world that love can exist in any part of life and should be appreciated and
Bradstreet’s last learned lesson is her wealth does not come from the things she gains on earth but her true wealth lies in heaven. She begins Stanzas 37-42 rebuking her thoughts of what will no longer take place in her ash filled home. Furthermore, Bradstreet gives her depiction of the “heavenly” place in Stanzas 43-48; which is built on permanent grounds and consist of expensive furniture all financed by God. In the last Stanzas of the poem Bradstreet begins focusing on the place where wealth is defined:
Robert Nozick’s Love’s Bond is a clear summary of components, goals, challenges, and limitations of romantic love. Nozick gives a description of love as having your wellbeing linked with that of someone and something you love. I agree with ideas that Nozick has explained concerning the definition of love, but individuals have their meaning of love. Every individual has a remarkable thing that will bring happiness and contentment in their lives. While sometimes it is hard to practice unconditional love, couples should love unconditionally because it is a true love that is more than infatuation and overcomes minor character flaw.
Love and affection is an indispensable part of human life. In different culture love may appear differently. In the poem “My god my lotus” lovers responded to each other differently than in the poem “Fishhawk”. Likewise, the presentation of female sexuality, gender disparity and presentation of love were shown inversely in these two poems. Some may argue that love in the past was not as same as love in present. However, we can still find some lovers who are staying with their partners just to maintain the relationship. We may also find some lovers having relationship only because of self-interest. However, a love relationship should always be out of self-interest and must be based on mutual interest. A love usually obtains its perfectness when it develops from both partners equally and with same affection.
...e from her love to the world. Perhaps, she believed that in this love of her, she became God-like and God thus punishes her. Nevertheless, the presence of God in her poems is more than clear. Perhaps, it was due to religious beliefs that she though that it was wrong to feel too strong feelings to world and she considered herself to be a sinner who deserves punishment. Today, there are few followers of Bradstreet, but she, her ideas and her thoughts about sufferings still remain in modern books.
Cummings theme of how strong someones love can be appeals to readers minds, because everyone wants that connection with their partner, That undying love for one another. Some people long for a love...
She defines her idea of what is right in a relationship by describing how hard and painful it is for her to stray from that ideal in this instance. As the poem evolves, one can begin to see the author having a conflict with values, while simultaneously expressing which values are hers and which are unnatural to her. She accomplishes this accounting of values by personalizing her position in a somewhat unsettling way throughout the poem.
According to BellaOnline, Bradstreet was, “married to the governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony and had eight children.” Even though her marriage might have become filled with routines and lost a little passion, the poet never lost the love for her husband. She states that the power of her “.love is such that rivers cannot quench”(Bradstreet, 7). Bradstreet expresses her emotions to be so strong that not even a roaring river can possibly satisfy them. She prizes her husband’s “.love more than whole mines of gold/ Or all the riches that the East doth hold,” (Bradstreet, 5-6) meaning she values his affection more than any amount of money she could obtain.
