How hard is it to live the life of an American? Is the American Dream feasible? The American Dream is easily available for the people who are wanting to work hard, willing to stand up and be brave to express what they feel, and hopeful for the better as they live their life day by day, yet the American Dream isn’t easy to attain for some because they are afraid to fail, and they do not have any confidence. In America, if Americans do not work for what they want, they will not get that thing. The daily life of an American is either school or work. There isn’t really any time to do anything else. If Americans don’t work they won’t get their necessities. So as an immigrant coming into America you should take any opportunities that are available. In the short story, “America and I”, by Anzia Yezierska that is what she did. “In the golden land of flowing opportunity I was to find my work that was denied me in the sterile village of my forefathers.” She sees all of the opportunities that are in America so she is going to take advantage of that. “Once I thought that in America everybody works for love, Nobody has to worry for a living.” Sooner or later she realizes that that was completely wrong. But as the strong woman that she is, she proves that she has good workmanship and willing to work for what wasn’t given or allowed for her. She came from a country that didn’t allow women to work. Also is the poem “I Hear America Singing” by Walt Whitman, he says “The mason is singing as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work,” Working is an everyday thing like stated before. If you do not you will not survive in this cold world, people who do not work get looked down upon and they try to rely on everybody that’s around them. Things will get hard and you just gotta hope and pray for the better as you live you life daily. In “I Too Sing America” by Langston Hughes, He says, “I’ll be at the table , when company comes,” He is very hopeful and is determined that he will be at the table when company comes. Hughes has a strong and determined mind that he is going to be at that table no matter what. With him having hope that he will be at that table shows how strong Americans are. Most Americans will do whatever it takes to make sure they get what they need; want. I say at least eighty five percent of people in America would see you struggling with your hope and they will do whatever they can to help a fellow citizen. In the poem “Let America Be America Again” by Langston Hughes, he says “I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek—” Hughes is saying that he is an immigrant that is coming to America that has hope at the tip of his fingers. Hoping that the “land of opportunity” lives up to the expectations. Does the “land of opportunity” really live up to the expectations? In addition to the statement stated before, in the poems it says, “Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath, But opportunity is real, and life is free, Equality is in the air we breathe” Hughes is saying that the hope he had about the United States of America being the “land of opportunity” was everything that he was hoping
Ronald Takaki quotes Langston Hughes in his book A Different Mirror “ Let American be America again, let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed, … I am the red man driven from the land, I am the Immigrant clutching the hope I seek, O let my land be a land where, equality is the air we breathe.” (Takaki, 19-20). “‘We the’diverse ‘people of the United States’ transformed America into a mighty economy and an amazing unique society of varied races, ethnicities, and religion.” (Takaki, 20). A big house, a family, enough money to feed their family and do other things around town, a job, success, peace, love, and happiness are all things that qualifies one for living the American dream. Some people however, do not believe in the American dream because it is hard to achieve even if you are taking all the right steps to achieve it. Years ago, the United States of America was the prime example of prosperity and opportunity. In recent years, in the worst recession since the Great Depression, unemployment and interest rates have skyrocketed. The “American Dream” is an idea that was once a commonly accepted ideology in this country. It has since become only a fallacy. The “American Dream” is no longer an attainable idea, only a fantasy. The “American Dream” is not a true dream that will ever be equally attainable by everyone.
The American Dream is known to be a hope for a better, richer, happier life for all citizens of every class. For almost all Americans, this entails earning a college degree, gaining a good job, buying a house, and starting a family. Although this seems wonderful, a large amount of the American population believes that the Dream has changed immensely because of increased prices in today’s society, the price of tuition being highly unaffordable, as well as the unemployment rate skyrocketing and weaker job growth. While some American citizens believe it has changed, others believe that the American Dream has not changed, but point out it is harder to obtain.

However, is this still true? Brandon King debates his interpretation of the American Dream in his published work, “The American Dream: Dead, Alive, or on Hold?” During his essay, the speaker highlights how important the American Dream is to the economy and providing a distance from inequality. The speaker emphasizes his belief that the American Dream is still alive within America and that people must work hard to achieve it. When discussing the American Dream, King will agree that the idea is alive and thriving in the minds of Americans; yet, I argue that the idea is on hold within American society due to lack of upward social independence and economic mobility.
The American Dream is so important to our country and especially for our generation to take seriously. The American Dream is the opportunity to reach the goals one sets for themselves. It is about having your dream job and life you have always fantasized about. The dream is also about having freedom and equality. The American Dream was much easier to attain a few decades ago compared to today. However, it is still possible. The economy was better fifty years ago than it is today. People are in greater debt now and the United States is in higher debt than it was fifty years ago. The American Dream is still possible despite the lack of improvement within social mobility in American society over the past years. The American dream is achievable by being able to live a middle-class lifestyle and that lifestyle is obtainable through hard work and perseverance, even in light of obstacles such as racism. “The American Dream is still achievable, however, the good news is that people at the bottom are just as likely to move up the income ladder today as they were 50 years ago” (O’Brien 1). The ability to attain the American Dream is hindered by race, the middle class, and giving up facing adversity.

Jay Gatsby died trying to acheive his dream and get the girl he loved, but died happy because he had pursued her until his death. The band All Time Low wrote a song called “The Reckless and The Brave” that brings a new light to how we go about achieving our dreams. So I believe that the American Dream is all about doing what will make you the happiest in the end.
Comparing the perspective of the American dream in the 1920’s to the American Dream in the 1940’s and present day seems to be a repeating cycle. The American dream is always evolving and changing. The American dream for present day is similar to the dream of the 1920’s. An Ideal of the American life is to conform to what our society has determined is success. Money, materialism and status had replaced the teachings of our founding fathers in the 1920’s. A return to family values and hard work found its way back into American’s lives in the 1940’s. The same pursuit of that indulgent lifestyle that was popular in the roaring twenty’s has returned today for most Americans, many Americans are living on credit and thinking that money and the accumulation of material items can solve all problems. Through film, literature, art and music, an idealized version of what it means to be an American has changed from money, materialism, and status of the 1920s to hard work and family values of the forties.
In today’s society it is questioned that the American Dream can or cannot be reached. The answer to that question is yes it can be and their is a simple definition for it. The American dream is an idea, which sees freedom as the opportunity for success and prosperity. It is a rising thought, realized through working hard. It is a belief by Americans that if one works hard and puts his mind in what he wants to be, he will get there and succeed in life. People should be able to make personal choices without restrictions limiting people based on ethnicity, race, religion, caste, or class. While America is argued to be the land of opportunities, this is not always true, as there is less social mobility tied with immense differences among us. It has become harder for the poor to move up while the gap between the poor and the rich has gotten larger. A person can succeed just by being in the middle class, having a secure home and job, and work hard for what he wants. Nevertheless, lately, Americans feel that the American dream is dead because the middle class is slowly shrinking, people are feeling less secure because of increased struggles, and Americans are losing motivation to work hard.
