The topics of Love, Marriage and Gender are very popular topics examined in many works of classic literature. Two such works include the romantic comedies, William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen. One of the central issues explored in these works includes the meaning of love and its relation to the convention of marriage. Additionally, the two works encompass many important gender issues of 16th and 19th century England, including the power imbalances between men and women and general patriarchal dominance. While the love story in Northanger Abbey is not as pronounced as Shakespeare’s play, Austen takes a similar approach in portraying themes of love and marriage in her novel through satire and comedic effect. Among other things, Northanger Abbey examines the importance of marriage and its relationship to financial security and social status for women in 19th century England. This is seen through Isabella’s relationship with James and the fact that she clearly only wanted to marry him for the perceived financial security. It is important to note that this is similar to marriage traditions of Shakespeare’s time, of which Shakespeare would have had in mind when writing A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Dolan, 2). Contrastingly, Catherine has very different opinions on people marrying for money. In fact, she even says, “to marry for money I think the wickedest thing in existence” (Austen, 137). Catherine clearly holds more romantic ideas on love and marriage despite her naiveté towards relationships. Throughout the works of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the themes of marriage and love are developed through the complexity of the situations that the characters encounter with one another. In Pride and Prejudice, the Bennet girls feel a pressure by society to find a man and get married by a certain age and that is simply how life is supposed to go for these young women. The women’s desires to settle are for the sole purpose of security and this can lead to unhappiness in a marriage of convenience. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the characters feel real true love and want to marry for the sole purpose of being together for the rest of their lives. This contrast of motives for marriage ultimately leads to a contention with a partner or love affair that will last a lifetime. A Midsummer Night's Dream is, in a way, Romeo and Juliet turned inside out--a tragedy turned farcical. The tragedy both are based on is the story of "Pyramus and Thisbe." In one, Ovid's story is treated as a melodrama (in Romeo and Juliet) and in another, it is fodder for comedy (in A Midsummer Night's Dream).

It is well known that Shakespeare’s comedies contain many marriages, some arranged, some spontaneous. During Queen Elizabeth's time, it was considered foolish to marry for love. However, in Shakespeare’s plays, people often marry for love. With a closer look into two of his most famous plays As You Like It and Twelfth Night or What You Will, I found that while marriages are defined and approached differently in these two plays, Shakespeare’s attitudes toward love in both plays share similarities. In Austen’s time, the inability to see past wealth when considering marriage is a cultural tie to the era and its norms. It’s a pitiable and vain cultural upbringing that is frowned upon in this century. One does not simply marry for the sake of wealth and reputation. Without love, marriage cannot last. It ends in a deadlock, or with two people living together but leading separate lives behind closed doors.

Through the use of conservative characters that were socially accepted in England during this time, Austen provides the reader with necessary details that show how insane these people were. On the other hand, Austen gives her dissentient characters more credit for their rebellious deeds. Set in the North of England, the convention of marriage is prominent in Victorian society. This is shown as very detrimental to many characters in Brontë’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ leading to marriages in which, neither the bride nor groom know each other well enough to spend their lives together, causing a breakdown of their relationship and pain for surrounding characters. Brontë shows that, without love, a marriage is unable to function and prevents those involved from achieving their desires. In ‘Scarlet Letter’, Nathaniel Hawthorne proves to the reader that an unfortunate marriage can lead to adultery, revenge and unhappiness, caused by traditional conventionality.
