Compare and contrast the attitudes to war as reflected in for the
fallen and the send off.
'For the fallen' and 'The Send-off' are poems written demonstrating
attitudes towards war. Whilst banyan conveys an idealised, romantic
picture of war that depicts the soldiers as heroic and courageous,
Owens attitudes towards war are more pessimistic in nature. Owen uses
appearance versus reality to show the corruption and misery of war.
Binyan and Owen convey their attitudes through the language, structure
and poetic devices they employ
The attitudes to war in 'for the fallen' are patriotic and
romanticised. The opening lines, 'with proud thanksgiving,' suggest
grandeur, prestige and honour. Binyan conveys the ideas that fighting
for your country, and serving in the war is honourable. To emphasise
the honour of fighting in the war banyan employs a metaphorical
representation of England as the capital mother. 'a mother for her
children,' through personifying England as a mother it is almost like
England has nurtured and shaped her children which are symbolic of the
soldier which depicts the view that it was the soldiers duty to fight
for their country. The repetition of the words 'for her,' evokes guilt
in the readers as banyan illustrates the attitude at the time being
that England has done so much for the soldiers that it was expected of
them to give back to their country.
Contrasting to the patriotic and idealised image of war and serving
your country the representation that Owen conveys of war, is eerie and
daunting,' the darkening lanes.' The imagery of the 'darkening lane'
could reflect the lives of the solders sent to war, it suggests that
their death were almost inevitable and they were bound to death before
they wee even sent off. The use of the word darkening eliminates any
hope the readers may have and illustrates Owens attitude that they're
no hope in fighting and without hope there was no purpose or point in
fighting. Owen also expresses certain vulnerability in the soldiers as
they are sent into a world which they know nothing about.
Similarly Binyan demonstrates the same naivety and innocence of the
soldiers that served in the war. 'They went with songs to the battle,'
suggests that the soldiers were unprepared and unaware of the harsh
realities of war, which is reflected in the behaviour. Binyan
demonstrates that the soldiers entered the battle field with
aspirations, the fact that they were ready to fight for their country
'against the odds uncounted,' and went almost willingly 'with songs,'
demonstrates honour. Binyan follows this with, 'they were young,'
which emphasises their naivety and innocence; the soldiers were
vulnerable but remained 'true of eye, steady and aflow,' which
Wilfred Owen expresses his feelings about war in “Anthem for a Doomed Youth”, which revolves around the events that took place in World War I. Throughout the sonnet, the speaker talks bitterly about modern warfare, noting the harsh sounds of war and questioning the treatment of the soldiers that perish. In the octave, the speaker wonders what can be done to honor the soldiers that died, but realizes negatively that the soldiers only receive death instead of ceremonies. In the sestet, the speaker expands upon this idea of a proper ceremony for the deceased soldiers, saying that the families must be the ones to properly honor their dead. Owen’s use of the Petrarchan sonnet with a Shakespearean rhyme scheme, helps him express his frustration about war and its subsequent treatment of the dead.
Just as the poem is written in a rhyme and rhythm that makes poetry easy to follow, the vivid imagery helps one to picture more easily what is going on in the poem. Owen brilliantly chooses words and phrases that illuminate the scene, making the reader feel as if he is physically in the scene along with the characters. For example, Owen describes that the Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots/ But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;/ Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots/ Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind (Gioia 782). A feeling of sadness and pity is felt as one hears the previous words. Kurt Vonnegut, the author of Slaughterhouse-Five, provided a powerful first-hand account describing the horrific events of WWII. Vonnegut recounted the events and wrote about himself through the novels protagonists, Billy Pilgrim. He was pessimistic regarding the novel because he wrote, “It is so short and jumbled and jangled, because there is nothing intelligent to say about a massacre” (Vonnegut 22). However, on the other spectrum critics considered it to be “one of the worlds greatest antiwar books”(Vonnegut Back cover). The controversial novel was published in 1969, which was over two decades after WWII. The time it took Vonnegut to write the novel is an indication of how difficult it was for him to write about the bombings. Vonnegut does not write the novel to portray the narrator as, “John Wayne or some of those other glamorous, war loving, dirty old men” (Vonnegut 14). Instead, he writes about the true chaos’s the narrator endured during his time in Dresden. Vonnegut’s novel consisted of events that reflected major societal and political movements, such as civil rights movements, and antiwar movements, within the United States during the 1960s.

Nothing can impact society like war. War can be viewed as noble and just, or cruel and inhuman, as well as everything in between. War affects everyone in society whether they are fighting in a foreign country or waiting at home for a loved one to return. War is an indispensable part of civilization; found at every chapter of human history. It is the culmination of the basic survival instinct when provoked. As has the technique of battle; society's view on war has changed as well. Today the act of war has become almost shameful, whereas in earlier eras war was glorified and heroic. American society's view on war has changed also. Our history, even as a young country has seen a great deal of conflict.
The just war theory is described by Thomas Massaro in his book Living Justice as the “principle that warfare might be justified under certain conditions” (108). The complexities involved with international relations makes determining a just war very difficult. Even though historically pacifism hasn’t gained much traction within Catholic circles, it currently is gaining popularity with many mainstream Catholics. With so many differing views on military action, one might ask, “What determines a just war? How can we balance the need for peace with self-defense?” An examination of criteria for a just war and critiques written on this topic might shed light on these two questions.
The use of compelling figurative language helps to reveal the reality of war. In the first line, "Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,"(1) shows us that the troops are so tired that they can be compared to old beggars. Another great use of simile, "His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin,"(20) suggests that his face is probably covered with blood which is the colour symbolizing the devil. A very powerful metaphor is the comparison of painful experiences of the troops to "[v]ile, incurable sores on innocent tongues."(24) This metaphor emphasizes that the troops will never forget these horrific experiences. As you can see, Owen has used figurative language so effectively that the reader gets drawn into the poem.
Owen uses imagery constantly to convey the conditions and feelings experienced during this war. Firstly I will be exploring Metaphor as it is used so much in this poem. The first metaphor which I will examine is: “Haunting Flares” on line 3 of the first stanza. This quote has so many connotations, my first opinion on this was that the flares which the enemy are firing to light up the battle field are said to be representing the souls of the soldiers fallen comrades. This could also be said to represent the power the enemy has on their own mortality as the bright flares would light up the battle-field exposing everything to their view, this indicates that the enemy always seem to have power upon the soldiers, almost godly. The second metaphor which I will explore is:
Owen first describes in extreme detail the reality of war with graphic imagery in Stanza III. This can be seen in the quotation: “He lost his colour very far from here”. The action of the protagonist losing his colour is a metaphor that Owen uses effectively to symbolise the protagonist losing a lot of blood, which gives the reader a first hint about the brutality of war. “Colour” can also be interpreted as the fruitful and colourful events in life, in which now the protagonist is going to be deprived of, since his life is fading away. Owen mirrors “light – blue trees” in Stanza II with this quotation, in which the two colours are in binary opposition. The colour “light blue” depicts and creates a sense of euphoria and romance. As the protagonist has now lost this “colour”, he will no longer experience elation or affection, and will now live a “grey” life, as mentioned in Stanza I. The phrase “very far from here” also suggests the difficulty for the protagonist in finding this “lost colour”. As he had lost this “colour” very far from here, Owen suggests that his loss maybe permanent and adds to the tragedy and pathos of his situation.
Owen was able to evoke emotions through the use of imagery, as well as the usages of literary devices. This poet tends to use a lot of similes, metaphors and personification to express his image of the death and destruction of the war. ‘The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells; And bugles calling for them from sad shires.’ The use of personification gives the reader a clear feeling of what Owen is trying to express. Furthermore, sense of demonic force is also shown about torture for the soldiers. . In ‘Anthem of Doomed Youth’ Owen shows another version of the suffering- the mourning of the dead soldiers. When Owen asks “What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?”, his rhetorical question compares the soldiers to cattle as they die and suffer undignified. Owen uses this extended metaphor to confront us with the truth, that there are too many fatalities in war. As such, the soldier’s deaths are compared to livestock, to emphasise their poor treatment and question our perspective about soldiers dying with honour. With an overwhelming death toll of over 9 million during WWI, Owen depicts how the soldier’s die with the repetition of “Only the...” to emphasise the sounds of war that kills soldiers in the alliteration ‘rifles’ rapid rattle.’ Owen also illustrates the conditions that the soldiers died in and how they were not given a proper funeral in the cumulation ‘no prayers nor bells,/ nor any voice of mourning.’ Owen painfully reminds us that we have become complacent with the deaths of soldiers, seeing them as a necessary sacrifice during human conflict. Thus, Owen shows us what we have overlooked about war, that is, that it brings endless death and long-lasting grief to the surviving soldiers and the people around

Ultimately, we have two poems which can be compared on the grounds of their subject, but are poles apart regarding their message. The structure of these poems is not what would be typically expected from a war poem, but are structured on the basis of these typical structures in order to create some sense of familiarity. Brooke’s poem expands on this familiarity while Owen attempts to deliberately sabotage it. In regards to content, Brooke shows throughout his perception of the nobility of dying for one’s country, whilst Owen uses all of his poetic techniques to show the opposite.
