A False Perception; a Comparison of Everyday Use and Araby When an individual is too caught up in their own world, how are they to know what is truly valuable or significant? Throughout the short stories Everyday Use by Alice Walker and Araby by James Joyce there were many examples of people not having a clear understanding of the way the world works due to them being too distracted by their own thoughts and concerns. In Everyday Use it followed a black family and the outlook from the daughter, Dee. In Araby it followed a teenage boy and his desire for his neighbour, Mangan's sister. Viewing life through a false perception was a shared theme in these stories shown by the characters questioning different forms of tradition, isolating themselves …show more content…
The way that Dee wanted to preserve the quilts her ancestors crafted instead of their traditional everyday use was similar to when the main character in Araby originally thought that love was not something that needs to be won over or bought. Dee rejected what was known to be true by trying to preserve her family's useful quilts like artifacts. She explained that her sister did not understand by saying "’Maggie can't appreciate these quilts! She'd probably be backward enough to put them to everyday use.’" The quilts showed the hard working people of her family's past, yet she attempted to reject that in a twisted modernist way. The way that Dee tried to move away from tradition was similar to how the main character in Araby realized the wrongness of his perception of love’s tradition. He started out by putting his crush on a pedestal, and believing that the way to someone's heart was through gifts and money. It was almost like he was bribing her to an event called the Bazaar with him when he said “`If I go, I will bring you something.'” Then he had an epiphany. Love must be reciprocal, not something that can be won.This traditional way of trying to win one’s love instead of it being a reciprocal concept was then discovered to be false to him. Through having contrasting views from her family, Dee began to isolate herself from her old homelife, just like the main character in Araby’s obsession with Mangan's sister caused him to be blind towards his schooling and family. Dee’s mother had no education herself because she had grown up in a time of segregation when education was not seen as an important thing for females to have. Dee was somewhat ungrateful when granted the opportunity to study. This was shown by her mother saying “‘She washed us in a river ofma ke.believe, burned us with a lot of knowl edge we didn't necessarily need to know.’” This shows that after Dee began to think she was superior to her family because of her contrasting views and education, she began to isolate herself. Dee moving away from her family and abandoning her family's morals was similar to the way that the main character in Araby began to neglect and ignore all other components of his life after becoming infatuated with Mangan's sister. His responsibilities in his life seemed far less important than his study of his crush. This was clear when he stated things such as “I wished to annihilate the tedious intervening days. I chafed against the work of school,” or “I had hardly any patience with the serious work of life.” The distraction of his love for this girl led him to isolate himself and become blind to
Dee’s appreciation of everyday objects like the butter churn or quilts lie not in their practical usage, but in the heritage she seeks to reclaim as an relic rather than a way of life. She gets upset when she does not get the quilt. “But they're priceless! [Dee] was saying now, furiously; for she has a temper.” (68). What is most crucial about the quilts Dee want are that she does not understand that they are made up of daily life, from materials that were lived in. Even though Grant struggles with his own problems, he overcomes them for a greater cause. The protagonist of Araby is a young boy who is infatuated with his friend Mangan 's sister. The setting, and the introduction of the this woman is nearly identical to that in A&P. Joyce 's narrator spends his time “lay[ing] on the floor in the front parlour watching [Magnan 's sister 's] door” (Joyce 182). Immediately from the outset of the story, Joyce has rendered the narrator as someone who frivolously awaits his female interest with no other motivation. The main character then finally encounters Magnan 's sister personally, where she tells him about a bazaar near town called Araby. Joyce 's protagonist is shocked when Magnan 's sister “addresse[s] the first words to [him]” (Joyce 183) as he has spent a plethora of time yearning for an interaction with her. Joyce has implemented the idea into Araby that males are inherently reliant on females. Interestingly, Joyce has incorporated another male character in his story that is presented as inferior to his female counterpart. The purpose of the narrator 's uncle in the story is to slow the main character from going to Araby. Mama refuses to allow it, Dee was offered the quilts when she was in college and didn’t want them at that time. Mama gives the quilts to Maggie as her wedding gift to be used every day as they were intended, knowing how much Maggie appreciates them. I agree with Mama and Maggie for keeping family memories and objects in daily use. It is important to maintain your family history in your everyday life to preserve those special memories.
Many people show their appreciation for things in different ways. Dee appreciates the quilt for being her heritage. She can't express enough how she feels about it. She can't even imagine that the quilt was hand made with every stitch stroked in and out. As for Maggie, Dee believes she can't appreciate the quilt in the same way she can. "Maggie can't appreciate these quilts." Instead, she thinks that Maggie will use the quilt for about 5 or so years and it will turn into a rag. "She'd probably be backward enough to put them to everyday use." "Maggie would put them on the bed and in five years they'd be in rags. Less than that!" Dee doesn't feel Maggie deserves the quilt.

It is imperative to understand that these heirlooms are mere representation of heirlooms designed for everyday use. It is ironic that Dee changes her name, and wants to take the dasher to show off in her home as part of her heritage when she is trying so hard to distance herself from her past. She does not understand that she is taking away an item used every day by her mother. She is convinced that Maggie does not deserve the quilt, because she would merely put it to everyday use. Mama cannot fathom the reason behind Dee’s desire to possess the quilt when it is obvious she sees it as an artifact. The relationship between Mama and Maggie is different from hers and Dee’s and is evident in the way the use of the family heirloom is viewed; while the former would care for and preserve the heirloom, the latter would only hang it as a piece of art, to be discarded when they get old or new ones are
...round behind, when she decided to change her name she broke a pattern and a symbol that meant a lot to her family, and when she tried to define what exactly a quilt or any aftifact as a matter fact should be used she made it look like her mother and sister really didn’t know anything or at least not as much as she though. When she told her sister to make something of herself and that Maggie might not be something big at all because of the way she lived it showed that Dee was embarrassed or at least trying to not look but on how she was raised. Dee's decisions to move, to change her name, to not know how to quilt, an important task her whole family including Maggie knew how to do, and failure to be interested in the actual people who made these artifacts are all good points in proving Dee's lack of desire to carry on her family's heritage, to be proud of her roots.
Quilts symbolize a family’s heritage. Maggie adheres the tradition by learning how to quilt from her grandmother and by sewing her own quilts. Maggie also puts her grandmother’s quilts into everyday use. Therefore, when Dee covets the family’s heirloom, wanting to take her grandmother’s hand-stitched quilts away for decoration, Mama gives the quilts to Maggie. Throughout “Araby”, the main character experiences a dynamic character shift as he recognizes that his idealized vision of his love, as well as the bazaar Araby, is not as grandiose as he once thought. The main character is infatuated with the sister of his friend Mangan; as “every morning [he] lay on the floor in the front parlour watching her door…when she came on the doorstep [his] heart leaped” (Joyce 108). Although the main character had never spoken to her before, “her name was like a summons to all [his] foolish blood” (Joyce 108). In his short story “Araby”, James Joyce tells a story of a young boy’s infatuation with his friend’s sister, Mangan, and the issues that arise which ultimately extinguish his love for her. In his first struggle, the narrator admires Mangan’s outer beauty, however, “her name was like a summons to all his blood,” which made him embarrassed to talk with her (Joyce 318). In James Joyce’s “Araby” a young boy living in a dark and grave world develops an obsessive adoration with an older girl who lives in his neighborhood and his devotion towards her ultimately forces him to make a promise to her he is incapable of keeping, resulting in a life changing epiphany.
The narrator alienated himself from friends and family which caused loneliness and despair, being one of the first themes of the story. He developed a crush on Mangan's sister, who is somewhat older than the boys, however he never had the confidence to confess his inner-most feelings to her. Mentally, he began to drift away from his childlike games, and started having fantasies about Mangan's sister in his own isolation. He desperately wanted to share his feelings, however, he didn't know how to explain his "confused adoration." (Joyce 390). Later in the story, she asked him if he was going to Araby, the bazaar held in Dublin, and he replied, "If I go I will bring you something.' (Joyce 390). She was consumed in his thoughts, and all he could think about was the upcoming bazaar, and his latest desire. The boy's aunt and uncle forgot about the bazaar and didn't understand his need to go, which deepened the isolation he felt (Borey).
