From 1750 until 1800 the colonial United States endured a period of enormous achievement along with a substantial amount of struggle. Before 1750, the new colony’s first struggle was between the colonists and England over who would have leadership within the New World. Once settled, the issues emerged from within the colonies themselves, particularly with the “belongings” they brought and imported. African American slaves were seen as property, and were not given any innate rights such as liberty or freedom when following their master to the New World. The point of view of slavery is going to be substantially different than from the previous views discussed coming from the slaves themselves. On January 18, 1773, a letter was written to Robert Pleasants, a Quaker; from Patrick Henry, a Virginian who was discussing the enslavement of African Americans in the colonies and his position on the matter. Henry being a white man in the Revolutionary era held power, was educated, and was able to articulate on the matter of slavery. Since Henry is discussing slavery from the view of the Quaker’s belief systems, his point of view is from a non-Christian standpoint. Most white colonists during this time period were slave owners, but surprisingly, Henry was in support of abolishing slavery. Ironically it was not in Henry’s interesting to oppose slavery so much to lose his slaves he owned. “I am drawn along by the general Inconveniancy of living without them. I will not, I cannot justify it… ” This passage shows inconsistency in Henry’s personal feelings about slavery, saying just before this passage that he fully supports the Quaker’s movement to abolish slavery, but will not inconvenience himself in losing his slaves for the work he has them doing. Similar to the previous document, Document 6, the individuals writing this urges the state of Massachusetts to grant them freedom. In the introduction to this document, a contradiction is addressed by Holton, discussing the colonists’ views on King George III’s policies. Holton states: “White colonists’ protests often charged that the policies adopted by King George III and Parliament took away their liberty and even threatened to “enslave them” (Holton 46). Based on this, one would imply that the colonists are not used to this type of oppression being placed on their lifestyle. It seems that the colonists felt as if they were going to be treated like slaves. This protest contradicts itself because the colonists are the originally the ones that are oppressing and setting strict rules and laws against African Americans. In addition, it appears that the colonists are unbothered with treating the slaves worse than the result of King George and Parliament’s policies, but suddenly it is not okay once that action is placed upon the colonists themselves. Another document that speaks on these contradictions is Document 10. This document examines Phillis Wheatley’s letter to Samson Occom. Notes on the State of Virginia, written by Thomas Jefferson was a story that had conflicting ideas about African Americans and their role in society. During Jefferson’s time period, whites often regarded African Americans simply as slaves, or even a different species altogether. What is presented to the slaves as a religious tenet is merely propaganda used to quell rebellious behavior. They fear a society in which they no longer serve to benefit from slave labor, and so they fear rebellion, they fear objection, they fear events like the Nat Turner Insurrection. The system the slaveholders strive so ardently to protect begins to affect even them, those in power, negatively. They begin to cope with their fear the only way they know how, by projecting it upon the slaves.

Slavery was a practice in many countries in the 17th and 18th centuries, but its effects in human history was unique to the United States. Many factors played a part in the existence of slavery in colonial America; the most noticeable was the effect that it had on the personal and financial growth of the people and the nation. Capitalism, individualism and racism were the utmost noticeable factors during this most controversial period in American history. Other factors, although less discussed throughout history, also contributed to the economic rise of early American economy, such as, plantationism and urbanization. Individually, these factors led to an enormous economic growth for the early American colonies, but collectively, it left a social gap that we are still trying to bridge today.

Emerson, an abolitionist himself, succinctly defines the ongoing dilemma of the slave owning South. The Southern states had inextricably tied their economy, politics, lifestyle and future to the “peculiar institution” of slavery. Once indulging in the ownership of slaves, the south had lost its own freedom to move beyond slavery. Instead they were bound to defend its existence and application regardless of circumstance.
Before the American Revolution, significant opposition to slavery already existed. James Otis, a Massachusetts lawyer emblemized this strain of thought when he wrote about the rights of natural born citizens and men. He argued that a man, black or white, should be guaranteed, as British subjects, the same rights and liberties. These liberties should protect men from slavery and afford them the rights guaranteed by the British Crown. Many other American colonists shared this attitude of abolitionism, however their reasoning relied on religious beliefs rather than modern political theory. A letter written by Phillis Wheatley to a Reverend exemplifies this justification for abolition. Slavery was the main resource used in the Chesapeake tobacco plantations. The conditions in the Chesapeake region were difficult, which lead to malnutrition, disease, and even death. Slaves were a cheap and an abundant resource, which could be easily replaced at any time. The Chesapeake region’s tobacco industries grew and flourished on the intolerable and inhumane acts of slavery.

Quaker concern over slavery was not a new phenomenon in 1688. In fact, it could be traced back to the founder of the Quaker religion, George Fox. Though he never condemned slavery, Fox stressed that all people were God’s children and called for Africans to be treated with fairness. Slavery concerned Fox for two reasons. His concerns rested on both morality and familial order which are reflective of core principles of Quaker ethics. In moral terms, Fox argued that slavery was inconsistent with the Quaker principles of equality and non-violence. He encouraged Quakers to treat blacks much in the way they would wish to be treated in a “slavish condition.” Fox stated,

Slavery was a very cruel and harsh way to live which can clearly be interpreted from the two passages. Slavery was full of unfair treatment, beatings, and unlimited amounts of discrimination. Once in awhile, a slave would come out on top and end up with a master with feelings, but more likely than not, they were not so lucky. Two accounts of stories show the harsh realities of being a slave. The first one, Wesley Harris: An Account of Escaping Slavery, describes the hardships of running and escaping slavery. The second story: An Account from the Slave Trade: Love Story of Jeffrey and Dorcas, a slave is being sold and is trying his best to persuade his new master to buy his love, Dorcas, as well. Both stories are have many similarities as well as plenty of differences that can be determined by reading the two passages.

n Frederick Douglass’ What to the Slave is the 4th of July, he presents a simple yet morally complex argument. In his letter, Douglass states that it is hypocritical for a country to celebrate its freedom and separation from another country, yet still have slavery alive and well in the United States. Morally, this issue is a pretty straightforward argument and the very definition of hypocritical. Douglass also touches upon his belief that all men and women are equal, as stated in the constitution, yet slaves are subhuman. Another topic touched on is the contributing factors that perpetuate the constant and unjust nature of how slaves are treated, such as religion, agricultural, and over all demeanor towards slaves.
