Tenement Housing are apartments where a large group of people and families, typically poor and immigrants, live.
Prohibition is the 18th amendment, the only one that has been repealed, that made selling, making, and buying alcohol illegal.
Suffrage is the right to vote.
A Women’s Sphere is a place or area, the home and kitchen, where it has been deemed acceptable for to be in charge and act like a woman.
Progressives were people, typically educated middle class, who wanted to solve the problems of society, which included social justice, democracy, and anti monopoly, through the government’s power.
Muckrakers were reporters that would investigate the problems of American society and expose them to the public.
The Square Deal, with the three c’s of controlling corporations, consumer protection, and conservation of natural resources, was Roosevelt’s government program aimed at protecting the consumers and the everyday man from big businesses.
Progressives:
Describe. The goals of the Progressive Movement were to solve the problems created during the Gilded Age. This included social justice, democracy and politics, and big businesses. Progressives felt that people weren't being treated fairly by the government, and that the government was being controlled by big businesses. One of the main goals of the movement, however, was that the

government should be a tool for change. Some of their goals were achieved. Roosevelt noticed and understood these problems and used his presidency to change and fix them. Laws were passed to and trusts were broken up. Tenement Housing Identify. Jacob Riis was an immigrant who was born in Denmark. He wrote the book How the Other Half Lives. The book shows and exposes how bad tenement housing was towards poor immigrants. Because of this, he was known as a muckraker. Describe. The tenement houses were absolutely disgusting. Rooms and hallways were typically dark, making it difficult to find your way around. Small apartments were shared with multiple families, meaning you had to sleep next to strangers. There weren't typically any bathrooms in a room, so many people from many rooms had to share one. Valuables and privacy was taken from these people. People living in these homes were usually too poor to afford more than one or two pairs of clothes. This means they would have to wash their clothes everyday. Sheets that were given out were yellow with sweat and urine stains. Many had to sleep of the floor as each room only had one or two beds, Immigrants were taken advantage of and had to pay higher prices for horrible living spaces. Children grew up unhappy and unhealthy. The picture below was taken by muckraker, Jacob Riis. He stated about this tired young girl, Katie, “The picture shows what a sober, patient, sturdy little thing she was, with that dull life wearing on her day by day.” Answer. Riis and Roosevelt worked together with other progressives to change the way of life for many poor immigrants. Riis and public health officials worked together to make sure landlords put proper lighting in the tenement houses. Some tenement houses were even torn down, making progressives another step closer to helping the poor get fair housing for the money. Riis also wanted to build parks for the poor so they wouldn't have to be inside crowded rooms all day. Riis showed the people the horrors of society and brought about change. Muckrakers Create. Muckrakers and Pic Collage. See Schoology for details. The Jungle Identify. Upton Sinclair was a muckraker, similar to Riis, who is most famous for exposing the disgusting practices of Chicago’s meat packing industry. He found it absolutely horrendous that people weren't being provided with safe, uncontaminated meat, and he wanted people learn about it and fight for it to change. Describe. The meat packing industry during the Progressive Era was horrible in today's standards. Big companies had no regulations and only wanted to make as much money as possible. To make more money they would slaughter pregnant cows and calfs. Instead of waiting until the cow would be born and healthy enough to eat, the company would just use the meat anyway to save time and money. Another example of the tactics of the meat packing industry at this time would be their lack of sanitary expectations. To, again, save time and money, employees left cut of hands and body parts of coworkers in the meat. Employees them packed the severed body parts with the rest of the meat and sent it out. When an employee died in a vat, the others would just continue to use that meat that was in there. The last example of the disgusting acts of the early meat packing industry would be their treatment of the environment. Employees rid the waste of the meat into the nearby part of the Chicago River. Solid filth and grease covered the creek. The Creek was and is commonly called “Bubbly Creek” because of the carbonic acid that bubbles to the surface of the river. Because of the acid, the river would burn causing a fire that would have to be taken out by firemen. All of these acts show the disgraceful behavior of Chicago’s meat packing industry, in the early 1900s. Answer. Because of Sinclair’s book, The Jungle, many changes were made in the food industry. Teddy Roosevelt, as the president, read the book and agreed that something was wrong, and it had to change. He created the Pure Food and Drug Act. This act required the right labeling of ingredients and sanitary expectations with recurring inspections. Also branching from Roosevelt, the Food and Drug Administration formed. It was one of the government tools to stop the big businesses from taking advantage of consumers, the goal of muckrakers. Evaluate. The meat packing industry has changed a lot since the 1900s. Now, there are many strict sanitary expectations and regulations. Consumers are able to know what violations certain factories or restaurants have acquired. People know exactly what is in their food, unlike they did before. Correct labeling is required by law. There is also more competition, and the industry isn't just run by one big company. Completing companies keep prices from getting too high and taking advantage of consumers. Most people assume that nothing bad is in our food today, but that is wrong. Things like rat droppings and maggots are in our food, and it is legal. Although their can only be a set amount of something, it is still their. Even though it seems similar to the early meat packing industry, at least there is a set amount to keep us from eating so much of it. Progressive President Choose and Defend. Teddy Roosevelt was the most successful of the presidents during the Progressive Era. Roosevelt, being the first president to win a Nobel Prize, made many changed in America. He was against big businesses and wanted to protect consumers. Teddy Roosevelt didn't just want to do these things, he made it happen. Some of his work includes Teddy’s Square Deal, the United Mine Workers meeting, the Northern Securities Case, the formation of the Pure Food and Drug Act, and many others. He read and learned about all of the muck of society, and dedicated his presidency to fixing these problems. Roosevelt even created the Progressive Party in the 1912 election. Taft lost the election because he wasn't well liked by everyone. While Roosevelt brought the cameras everywhere to show people what he was doing, Taft refused to have cameras take pictures of him when he would go out. He wasn't well liked enough to serve a second term. Wilson, like Taft, also wanted to help the progression of America, but Roosevelt was the one who started it off and did the most for the country. All of the laws Teddy Roosevelt created were to help America progress. Women’s Suffrage Contrast.
Carrie Chapman Catt and Alice Paul lead the Women's suffrage movement in the 1910s separately. Catt lead NAWSA, the National American Women’s Suffrage Association, and NWP, the National Women's Party. The early suffrage movement was focused on the black males getting to vote. Some women assumed that they would get to vote before they did. The movement tried to win people over state by state and by passing a Constitutional Amendment. In the 1910s, there were two different organizations fighting against each other, NAWSA trying to get votes state by state, and NWP trying to get votes through a Constitutional
Amendment. Imagine. You are a woman during this time period. Use examples to back up position below. Girls: Women should not be allowed to vote. We, as a gender, have too many womanly traits to allow us to vote for the correct candidate. Women are overly emotional, rash, and impulsive. We are to be virtuous and kind. We can't be like that if they are debating with others as to who is in office. Fighting and debating is the job of a man. Voting would only stress us out and strain our frail bodies. Women’s suffrage would only hurt everyone man or woman. Prohibition and the Temperance Movement Evaluate. I would rate the Temperance Movement as a 2 out of 10 in success. The Temperance Movement had a convincing argument on why alcohol was immoral, but it didn't stop people from having it. The fact that the 18th amendment is the only amendment to have been repealed shows how bad of a movement this was for America. Because something is banned, doesn't mean criminals are going to stop doing it, especially when the police force is full of corruption and bribery. Gangs and people like Al Capone used the Prohibition as a way to make even more money. They sold alcohol and other things to make money, often with the police’s knowledge. Underground bars, speakeasies, were formed as well. Police also knew about these, but were bribed to keep quiet. The Temperance Movement, although it had good intentions, was a complete failure. Compare and Contrast. The marijuana prohibition and the alcohol prohibition are very different, but there are some similarities as well. Today, here isn't as much corruption and bribery in the police force, which would keep drug dealers from getting as successful as Al Capone was during the alcohol prohibition. There are also more people in our police force all around America to stop crime. An interesting thing about the marijuana prohibition is that only certain states have marijuana being legal. Those states are breaking federal law, which is also an interesting part of this prohibition. During the alcohol prohibition, it was illegal in all states, no exceptions. The two are similar because the government is deciding what immoral behavior is. Federal government decides what is good for people and what isn't. Child Labor Imagine. This image is deceitful. These children love to work for me. They get out of school, which every kid wants, and they get paid for it. Children are learning how to work hard early on in life so that the transition into adulthood won't be as difficult for them in these troubling times. Many of these young people come from poor families. My company is trying to help families by offering families as many jobs as people in their family. I believe that my company is helping people get back on their feet. Create. Create a short video on child labor, make sure to use primary sources, music, narration, and quotes in your video. See Schoology for more details.
At the start of the 20th century, journalists had begun to play an important role in exposing wrongdoings within politics and society. These journalists, often called muckrakers, used their journalism to focus on political flaws and corruption in city governments. Several popular publishers adopted this form of journalism, which became widely popular

...’s suffrage and more social welfare programs. Progressivism focused on eliminating practices harmful to farmers, workers, tenement dwellers, and consumers by expanding government regulation over the economy. They wanted to government to help make it easier for people have more control over their lives. Without the populist the progressive movement would have never been able to complete so many accomplishments. Progressive party did not last but its goals, similar to the populist goals, become influential in the future. The progressive movement was overall a more overcoming movement. It took the populist ideals and influenced them in order to become successful during the progressive movement rather then in the populist. If the populist had an expanded argument rather then just based on farmers then they could have been more successful and setting out their goals.
Cities and industry grew in growth on the first of January in 1900 which created an influx of the high classes. Andrew Carnegie is a factory owner who was about to sell his steel company, but ended up becoming one of the richest man in the world. However, there was an underside of this whole excitement to earn money and the hope of the American dream. Average earnings were less than $500 a year, but in the unskilled southern workers earned an average of $300 a year. The work hours were 60 hours a week, wages were strained, and horrible child labor. The question is what was the most important problems in America during the early 1900s that needed to be addressed by The Progressive Movement. There are three main reasons: the struggling child labor, women’s voting rights, and
The term Progressivism implies a philosophy that promotes change/reform in the current political, economic, and social aspects of society while conservatism stresses gradual change in society but promotes tradition rather than change. The Progressive movement from 1901 to 1917 worked to improve aspects of society that grew out of problems which occurred during the Industrial Age. The goals of the "Progressives" were to stop monopolies, corruption, inefficiency and social injustices. Both progressive acts and amendments were being passed to deal with social ills, corruption in politics and corporate America. The period from 1901-1917 was more a victory for liberalism, mainly "modern liberalism", than a triumph of conservatism due to the fact that multiple reform movements were occurring in this era changing political, economic, and social aspects in society to protect the rights of the common man.
During the Progressive Era, pressure from labor, suffrage, and conservation movements profoundly changed the course of American history. Many of the reformers' ideas clashed with the male-dominated, capitalist economic structure present at the turn of the century. Some of the intended reforms opposed the current system, but the level of social unrest necessitated change. Businessmen and activists alike initiated the reforms during the Progressive Era. Government, due to the intention of calming the common man and quieting the seemingly more and more vocal middle class, supported them. In the final analysis, from the year 1900 to 1920, Progressive Era reformers were successful in bringing about reform to the United States.
Progressives were successful in areas of government concerning reform, regulation, as well as implementing changes to help shape the American government we have today. Looking at what the three progressive presidents, Roosevelt, Taft and Wilson, and what the progressive party accomplished were instrumental in shaping the future of America and is nothing short of remarkable. Many progressives thought that the greatest way to reform society was through its schools. Public education had grown rapidly since the Civil War. Progressives had new ideas about the purpose of education. Progressive educators believed that children should learn best by contributing in activities where they can work on projects and learn at their own rate. I thought this idea was a better way of learning because memorizing methods were really stressful and many people have diverse ways of learning: visual, hearing, hands on, and etc.
Muckraking. The public was becoming more and more informed throughout the Progressive Era. Muckraking, the predecessor to investigative journalism, would play a major role in exposing social problems. Muckrakers had a huge impact on the changing societal landscape and investigated anything that they felt was corrupt and needed reform, such as unsanitary conditions and housing. Two Famous muckrakers, Upton Sinclair and Jacob Riis, wrote books that would expose two of the biggest scandals of the Progressive Era.
The Progressive Era started in 1880 to 1920. Progressive reform started as a way to clean up politics and for social activism. It also exposes corruption within the government, as well as, political machines along with big business bosses. Many progressive reformers wanted to enforce a law that prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages and close down the saloons the progressive reformers started the fight for prohibition. Many reformers wanted to improve railroad system, education, better working conditions, eight-hour workweeks, remove trusts, a safer work environment, as well as, help with women’s suffrage.
The National Prohibition Act was added to the United States Constitution on January 16th, 1920 (The Eighteenth Amendment). The Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution prohibits the illegal manufacturing or selling of alcohol. There were only two ways to legally obtain alcohol under the prohibition laws. Religious groups were granted the right to obtain alcohol for sacramental purposes, and doctors were permitted to write prescriptions (Medicinal Alcohol).
The progressive movement of the early 20th century has proved to be an intricately confounded conundrum for American historians. Who participated in this movement? What did it accomplish, or fail to accomplish? Was it a movement at all? These are all significant questions that historians have been grappling with for the last 60 years, thus creating a historical dialogue where in their different interpretations interact with each other.
Reform provides permanent programs to avoid another depression and to protect citizens against an economic disaster. The Progressive Movement which targeted urban complications, there was a massive disparity between the wealthy and the poor and the goal was to bring equality into the nation. The movement aimed towards removing corruption and including American citizens into the political process. Additionally, to encourage the government to solve the social issues that were occurring in the late 1800’s and early 20th century, all while balancing impartial treatment into the economic matters.
The turn of the century was marked by a movement known as the Progressive Era, during which many groups sought to reshape the nation's government and society in response to the pressure of urbanization and industrialization. Progressives were mainly members of the Post-Civil War generation that made an attempt to master a world much different then that of their parents.
Prohibition was a period in which the sale, manufacture, or transport of alcoholic beverages became illegal. It started January 16, 1919 and continued to December 5, 193. Although it was formed to stop drinking completely, it did not even come close. It created a large number of bootleggers who were able to supply the public with illegal alcohol. Many of these bootleggers became very rich and influential through selling alcohol and using other methods. They started the practices of organized crime that are still used today. Thus, Prohibition led to the rapid growth of organized crime.
