Philosophy can be defined as the pursuit of wisdom or the love of knowledge. It is the product of education and experience, but more than the accumulation of information. Socrates, one of the most well-known of the early philosophers, epitomizes the concept of what is necessary of a true pursuer of wisdom: devoting his entire life to introspection, discussion and travel in search of the true meaning of the word. Divulged through Plato’s writings, Socrates is recognized for developing meanings of previously undefined concepts, such as truth, wisdom, and beauty. Due to Socrates’ role as a mouthpiece for his student’s ideas about the world, the creator of certain theories and concepts are not always distinguishable. Heraclitus of Epheseus, a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher, warned that “one ought not to talk or act as if one was asleep”, cautioning against the tendency of many people to live their lives unreflectively, and without much thought. Embracing this piece of advice, Socrates made tangible differences to his lifestyle. For contextual reasons, it is important to note that Socrates was raised by a family of good standing, and moved with ease in the most select circles of society. He served in the army, and was renown for fighting with great bravery. Despite countless opportunities to live a lavish life, he shunned luxury, and he lived simply. Characterizing himself as an annoying, incessantly biting insect called a gadfly, Socrates embraced Heraclitus’ advice and sought to impose this lesson onto as many others, regardless of class, as he could. Socrates’ mission in life quickly transformed from one of learning from those he once thought to be wiser than himself to one of teaching. Seeing himself as on a mission from the god Apollo, who wishes for him to demonstrate his newfound knowledge, Socrates spread his thoughts on the nature of wisdom to all of the people Athens. Socrates pursued this mission by exploring the mind through verbal interchange—a practice that would later become known as dialogue. True to his belief that he was no more wise than those around him and that philosophy was best explored through conversation with others, Socrates exchanged information with his peers in a style of education much less domineering than a lecture. The Socratic method, which is denotatively described as an investigation of complete issues through a question-and-answer format involves a conversation in which a student is asked to question their assumptions. In Walter Mosley’s Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned, the reader is introduced to Socrates Fortlow, an ex-convict who served twenty-seven years for murder and rape. Fortlow is plagued by guilt and, seeing the chaos in his town, feels a need to improve not only his own standards of living, but also those of others in Watts. He attempts this by teaching the people in Watts the lessons he feels will resolve the many challenges the neighbourhood faces. The lessons Fortlow teaches and the methods by which he teaches them are very similar to those of the ancient Greek philosopher for whom Fortlow was named: “‘We was poor and country. My mother couldn’t afford school so she figured that if she named me after somebody smart then maybe I’d get smart’” (Mosley, 44). Though the ancient Greek was born to be a philosopher and Fortlow assumed the philosopher role as a response to the poor state of his life and Watts, both resulted in the same required instruction to their populations. The two Socrates’ both utilize a form of teaching that requires their pupil to become engaged in the lesson. They emphasize ethics, logic, and knowledge in their instruction, and place importance on epistemology and definitions because they feel a problem cannot be solved if one does not first know what it is. Socrates put one’s quest for wisdom and the instruction of others above everything else in life. A simple man both in the way he talked and the wealth he owned, he believed that simplicity in whatever one did was the best way of acquiring knowledge and passing it unto others. He is famous for saying that “the unexplained life is not worth living.” He endeavored therefore to break down the arguments of those who talked with a flowery language and boasted of being experts in given subjects (Rhees 30). His aim was to show that the person making a claim on wisdom and knowledge was in fact a confused one whose clarity about a given subject was far from what they claimed. Socrates, in all his simplicity never advanced any theories of his own but rather aimed at bringing out the worst in his interlocutors.
According to Pierre Hadot, “Thus philosophy was a way of life, both in its exercise and effort to achieve wisdom, and its goal, wisdom itself. For real wisdom does not merely cause us to know: it makes us “be” in a different way” ( Pierre 265) This explanation of a philosophical way of life is in all ways the definition of Socrates’ life. Socrates made his way through his entire life living in this way, seeking out wisdom, seeking out answers and never once got in trouble with the court until the age of seventy years old. He believed that by telling people about ignorance and wisdom, that he was only doing so for the good of the people. Socrates even goes as far as saying, “I am that Gadfly which God has attached to the state, and all day long and in all places am always fastening upon you, arousing and persuading and reproaching you”(Plato 9). Socrates believes that he was sent from God to show people a different way of life, a life of questioning and reason to which he should teach to all people. When asked if he was ashamed of a course of life of which would likely bring him to an untimely end Socrates says, “you are mistaken: a man who is good for anything ought not to calculate the chance of living or dying; he ought only to consider whether in doing anything he is doing right or wrong” (Plato 7).
Socrates: A Gift To The Athenians As Socrates said in Apology by Plato, “...the envy and detraction of the world, which has been the death of many good men, and will probably be the death of many more…”(Philosophical Texts, 34) Throughout history, many leaders have been put to death for their knowledge. In Apology, Socrates- soon to be put to death- says he was placed in Athens by a god to render a service to the city and its citizens. Yet he will not venture out to come forward and advise the state and says this abstention is a condition on his usefulness to the city.
Martin Luther King Jr. and Socrates, both born in different time periods, are both similar in the fact that they are both defending their beliefs, and so different with regards to their approach for redemption and their opinions on the issue of civil disobedience. Dr. King was victimized for his skin color, and Socrates for his way of thinking. Socrates and Martin, through the uses of persuasion and persona, convey that what they did was not civil disobedience, but that they acted for the betterment of society.
In Plato’s apology, the story is told of how Chaerephon, friend of Socrates, went to the temple at Delphi to ask the oracle a question pertaining to the wisdom of Socrates, and how it compares to the rest of the men on earth. “He asked if any man was wiser than I, and the Pythian replied that no one was wiser” (Plato). This response was very confusing to Socrates because he recognized that he was not wise at all, and it troubled him for some time. Socrates then tries to refute the oracle by bringing a supposedly wise man from town to the temple to show the Pythian that he was wrong, but when they get there, Socrates realizes that the wise man was not wise at all, and neither of them knew anything really worth knowing. Socrates is as a person who is profoundly wise, a person who has understood planes of reality far higher than what is understood by most people. He is depicted as one who has been outside the cave and who is no longer imprisoned by the illusions of the ordinary world. He is depicted as a skilled communicator who can ask people to question and examine even their most cherished assumptions. Socrates was an insightful philosopher who had an opinion on all the basic fundamental questions. He had very strong beliefs that he willed others into believing through questioning and proving ignorance in others beliefs. He has particular views on every fundamental question and particular views on how people should live their lives. He says God has spoken to him about philosophy and says that it is his destiny and it is his calling in life. Through philosophy he searches for answers to the fundamental questions and gains wisdom and knowledge.
