We have seen it done many times by Hollywood, one man on a journey to fulfill his destiny as the hero. The interesting thing is these stories were being told long before Hollywood even existed. Two of the greatest tales that have been passed down for centuries, while being told in many different ways were Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a boy who through his journey must find courage and hart in order to face his biggest fear. The other tale being Beowulf, a story of a proven hero who must once again prove to his people why he has earned his ranks. Along the journey these two tales and the characters in them have their similarities and their differences, but in the end the messages that they tell are greater than anything else. Fear can be defined as many things, but back when these stories took place fear was unheard of for a hero. In order to be a hero one needs to be tough, smart, charming and above all brave. In Beowulf we find little to no fear at all. Beowulf himself is a man who prides himself on accepting any challenge that may or may not come his way. It can be argued that maybe the biggest fear of Beowulf is losing the respect of his people if he chooses not to fight. The same cannot be said for Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, in the fact that fear is a much bigger theme. Sir Gawain is somewhat of a childish hero; he is one who in his first encounter with the Green Knight debated whether or not to stand up to the challenge at all. Throughout the story Gawain debates with himself time and again whether or not to comfort the Green Knight for a second time. The funny thing is when reading this story, it seems like every decision Gawain makes is out of fear. It can be easy to fear the unknown, but for Sir Gawain the unknown is all he has to rely
