Dragons, witches, princesses and knights. These are the imaginary friends in so many children's lives. For young adults, those fairy tale characters give way to darker characters and more realistic situations. However, what do they all have in common? They live in short stories. Two short stories that are interesting are "Thank You M'am'' by Langston Hughes and ''Salvador Late or Early'' by Sandra Cisneros. Roger in ''Thank You M'am'' tries stealing a pocketbook from Mrs. Louella Bates Washington Jones late one night and must deal with the consequences. Salvador has to take care of his younger brothers, even though he is just a child himself. Because in the story of '' Salvador Late or Early'' Salvador is not much older than his brothers and he's as responsible as a teenager because he takes care of his brothers so his mom can take care of the baby. The story explains, ''homes are the color of bad weather, lives behind a raw wood doorway, shakes the sleepy brothers awake, ties their shoes, combs their hair with water, feeds them milk and corn flakes from a tin cup in the dim dark of the morning.'' (Cisneros). The family lives in poverty and doesn't have enough money to pay the bills and live a normal life. And in the story ''Thank you, ma'am'' Roger doesn't have a family at home so he pickpockets so he can meals but he met a lady named Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones by failing at stealing her purse but that didn't matter to the lady because she told him to wash his dirty face and then she gave him supper and half of her ten-cent cake then gave him ten dollars for some blue suede
