Digital vs Traditional
Remember being in first grade and reading the paperback Magic Treehouse book series where once you open the book and start reading the cover would never stay flat again, then in high school and college you were asked to analyze the books and you only had a small area to write your annotations on. Well what if I told you there was this form of technology called ebooks, otherwise known as digital versions of books and media that could change all that for the better? These e-books can be more beneficial to learning than traditional books, while also making reading more convenient and fun to do.
Through the growth in technology acceptance and capabilities, digital media like e-books are prone to provide new ways for readers

Each one of these people may have a different feature or use that benefits them over another feature, however they all can use the e-books and the advantages that come with them. Let’s say I’m your average businessman in New York City that takes the subway to and from work for an hour each way, and I like to catch up on my favorite book or magazine. Well all I have to do is take my phone or tablet out choose what I want to read and start reading, this form of technology now just become convenient to use. Some may say that the same can be done with traditional books, it could, but the convenience factor of all reading having my phone is not the same as having to carry around a book. Wherever this businessman goes he has an endless selection of things to read without ever having to carry extra or stop off at a …show more content…
and worldwide. Everyone likes sales revenue and e-books has a lot whether it be based of the U.S. or worldwide. U.S. e-book sales revenue is 3,356 million dollars, while worldwide is at 14.55 billion dollars. The U.S. sales revenue is based off the 457.09 million sales of e-books in the U.S. alone. The global e-book shipment number consists of 28.9 million (Statista 1). The numbers are pretty impressive for something that is still becoming popular among people around the world. If we go back in time we can see how at the end of 2009, e-book sales reached 60 million dollars(Statista 1). Two years pass by, and in 2012 a survey was done and released by Pew Research Center that concluded that e-book readers read an average of 24 books compared to the 15 books that were read by people who favorited traditional books( Bozorgmehri
In addition, textbooks are heavy to carry around and it takes longer to find a page. Likewise with digital textbooks they are compatible with tablets, smartphones, and laptops; it’s much easier to carry around and affordable price. However, some people may argue that digital textbooks can be a distraction for people because they would not bother read anymore. The author and poet Dana Gioia argues that electronics alternatives may be a bad influence that will lead society to not read anymore. Gioia complicates matters further when she writes, “While no single activity is responsible for the decline in reading, the cumulative presence and availability of electronic alternatives increasingly have drawn Americans away from reading” (161). I think Gioia is mistaken because she overlooks on electronics being a bad influence; but doesn’t see the benefits of electronics. To demonstrate, most of my textbooks are digital, which I can easily carry my tablet around where ever I go. Also, I save more money on digital textbooks and are simple to annotated the text. Journalist Ellen Lee interview a student from Liberty University, and he states that he prefers digital textbooks because he can tap his iPad, opens the digital copy and quickly open the page. Nevertheless, he also like digital textbooks because it has a feature that allows to highlight and mark the
This source considers the issue of converting to digital books, specifically as it pertains to the effect that this change would have on the global environment. Although the research does recognize that there are disadvantages to not having a physical copy of a book and to abandoning certain platforms that do not transfer well to a digital form, overall, these researchers conclude that publishers should move towards digital products not only for the sake of cheaper long-run costs, but also for the good that going paperless can do for the environment. By displaying a series of graphs, as well as including multiple data sets, the text explains how e-books compare with printed texts; then, analysis of these facts is also included to show the reader the authors’ point.
First, he provides an overview of the history and development of the book as well as the development of reading. Carr analyzes and explains the effects of these developments on the individuals. Furthermore, he notes that the Internet recreates and alters a medium’s content by the use of hyperlinks, which ultimately distracts readers, and by separating the content into organized chunks. These characteristics make the content “searchable” which stimulates skimming behavior or superficial reading. As a result, readers retain less information due to the lack of deep, analytical reading. In addition, online texts often incorporate opinions, beliefs, or skewed viewpoints of certain topics, which can have negative effects on readers. Carr also addresses that some opponents believe that hardcopy reading was a result of “impoverished access” (111) and that the desire to use the fast paced web is a result of a quickening pace of life and work over the past few

Take a look around you the next time you visit a quiet beach, and I'm sure you'll see that besides the men and women who have plopped themselves down with a paperback novel under the shade of an umbrella, numerous others are reading material on their Kindle. Amazon has sold millions of these devices in the last few years, to the point that mainstream consumers who aren't particularly gadget lovers are using them.
There are four main types of eReaders, Amazon Kindle, Sony eReader, Barnes & Noble Nook and the Apple iPad/iPhone. These and many other eReaders are used and owned by 2.1 million adults. The Kindle user demographics show that it is used by people 35 and older with less than a quarter of users under the age of 35. The split is that the 18-34 age group prefers the iPad over the Kindle. (Jennifer, 2010) Economic Trends: Economic stability has increased the probability of achievement for Amazon.com in the market.
Money is an important part of everyday life. If there is any way that money could be saved then that is more than likely the choice. The price for a tablet has been “continually falling,”(The Art Institute of Pittsburgh). If the price for a tablet becomes cheaper, then there is even more possibility of schools tapping into this industry to educate their students. Print textbooks can be somewhat expensive. The money used on print textbooks can be spent on e-books which cost less than the print version (The Art Institute of Pittsburgh). According to CBSNEWS, “Discovery’s lessons – branded ‘Techbooks’ that run on laptops, desktops, iPads or other tablets...

The advantages of E-books are clear. They provide the reader with a cost effective way to purchase and read books. In addition to that I found an article from WSJ by Steve Johnson that stated “E-books would likely change the way we read, write and sell books in profound ways” (Johnson). This statement is entirely accurate, because we are currently living through the transition to the digital form of publishing. Besides being cost effective E-books have many other advantages compared to traditional books. E-books have made a big impact in the lives of students. E-books being cheaper than traditional books is the single biggest reason for students to take advantage of them. Alongside that students are able ...
First and Foremost, tablets and laptops are way more convenient than textbooks. Most textbooks, especially high school textbooks, are heavy compared to a laptops or a tablet and cannot be placed in small places. Tablets and laptops can easily be stored in your backpack or carrying bag. You can store a large number of books on a tablet. You would not have to carry around more than one book. For instance, if you are a bookworm you can store and read over 100 plus books anywhere at any time. You would not have to worry about a light if you read in the dark. The light from the tablet’s screen will allow you to read during night and day. With a book you would need a flashlight to see the text in the dark. You would not have to worry about pages turning and flying everywhere when standing in front of a fan or outside on a windy day. Plus, you would not to worry about trying to hold the pages back if you are in bed reading. Therefore, tablets are way mare convenient than textbooks.
If reading were no longer important, book publishers such as Pearson and Thomson Reuters would no longer exist. However, they still do. In fact in 2012, Scholastic Press made $2,148 million USD in revenue. Genres published range from fantasy to history. In fact, publishing firms have used new media as a platform to further gain revenue and presence in society. ‘One sector of the publishing industry that’s alive and well, it’s e-books’ (McKinney ‘Book revenues are up’). According to PEW Internet Research Centre, the percentage of 16-year-old Americans who have read an e-book rose from 16% in 2011 to 23%. Besides ownership, the sales of e-books have also shown tremendous proliferate. Kindle ‘may be earning between $265 million to $530 million a year’ (Trefis Team Estimating Kindle Book-Sales) This shows that reading is still relevant as companies such as Kindle and Scholastic make a huge profit from book sales. This shows the demand for books are still great with many people reading them. Therefore, reading as a pastime is still
However, iIn spite of the current pre-eminence of e-books, it may be argued that they are not likely to replace print books anytime soon or possibly at all. Both formats have their advantages and drawbacks, which makes for one of them difficult to replace the other. Moreover, they serve differents needs and purposes. E-books are famous for their portability. Hundreds of e-books can be stored on a single device. Thus e-books don’t take shelving space and are convenient to take on travel, while even a few paper books are bulky and quite heavy to carry around. Numerous e-books are in open access, while paper books are not routinely available free of charge. E-books may be acquired and accessed immediately online, a feature I enjoy especially and treasure most: many a time I was able to buy and read an e-book at home within minutes of learning of its existence. Needless to say, e-books are considerably easier to cite and quote than print books, since the copy-paste feature spares us the trouble of retyping the quoted text. Another important advantage of digital books is their specialized software, which makes reading much easier: search and reference tools, changeable font size and day/night mode, dictionaries. Last but not least, e-books conserv...
EBooks are amazing but physical books for now will dominant way to read. As a lot of people have said, they just enjoy seeing their books on a real bookshelf not a virtual one. If you do happen to start using eBooks I wouldn’t use it as your main form for reading. EBooks are still in the beginning stages and have lots of issues.
However, I still want to stand on my opinion, I think e-book is better than printed book even more students prefer using printed books. I know using a e-book for long time may be harmful for people’s eyes, and the device may not support enough power for them to read books, but I more care about the advantages of e-book. An e-book is obviously cheaper than printed book, and it brings a lot of convenience into my study life. The most important thing is using an e-book is saving the earth resources. I believe that e-books will be more and more popular, and then replace using printed books in the
