Throughout the whole play there are themes of bipolar tendencies, depression, pill addiction, the dangers of mixing different pills, teenage life, the daughter doesn’t want to turn into the mom, the dad is trying to control the mom, the son is a figment of the moms imagination, and so forth but the moral of the story is the mom is seriously messed up and everyone has their own problems but in the end it all ends happy so that’s all that matters because it was a damn good show and I don’t want to cry anymore. So anyways the bipolar tendencies and depression don’t just show in the mom but with everyone in the family. The mother, Diana, is the first one in the progression of the play to show this as the first scene of the play starts out with …show more content…
So they all sit down at the table and mom brings out a birthday cake and starts singing happy birthday to her son that’s not there(Gabe) because he died when he was a baby but we don’t find out how he died until it gets closer to the end but Henry doesn’t know what’s going on and so he says that he didn’t know Natalie had a brother and she tells him he that she doesn’t because he died then it gets really depressing. Henry leaves, Diana is very distraught, and Dan realizes she hasn’t been taking her pills and takes her to a psychiatrist and when she gets there every response he gives is as a rockstar and she’s hallucinating this because she hasn’t taken her pills and so he recommends they start regular appointments. This all goes on for a while and i don’t remember all the details in between then but eventually Diana gets so bad that Dan signs a paper giving the psychiatrist permission to perform electro corrective therapy ECT which gives her memory loss and “fixes” her so that when she comes home everything is normal because everyone is happy but she forgets who both Natalie and Dan are and that the past 15 years have happened. Dan and Natalie both try and …show more content…
I give the band kudos because the dynamic contrast was so well done that they didn’t cover up the singing or speaking lines at all but if there was a nice melodic solo line or tension was building or even a sound effect for the music box it was there and it stood out while still being able to hear the actors. That is not easy at all plus that show was a good 2- 2 and a half hour show, and actually I think im underestimating that but still, it’s hard to play that long and still maintain the same quality of sound and focus throughout the whole play.Every movement, light, and sound was lined up exactly and nothing skipped a beat, it was really smooth and really well
In the Lilies of the Field by William E. Barrett, Homer and Mother Maria both display straightforward, hardworking, and stubborn character traits. Firstly, Homer and Mother Maria both display a straightforward personality by being brutally honest about their opinions. For example, when Mother Maria asks Homer to build a chapel, Homer speaks his mind by telling her he does not want to build it. Mother Maria shows her straightforward behavior during Homer’s stay at the convent. One morning, when Homer sleeps in late, Mother to becomes extremely upset and is not afraid to show how she feels about him. Secondly, both Homer and Mother Maria display a hardworking spirit. Homer is a hardworking man because after finally agreeing to build the chapel,
The production had many elements which for the most part formed a coalition to further the plot. The characters, the three part scenery and costumes represented well the period of time these people were going through. As far as the performers entering and exiting the stage, it could have been more organized. There were a few times when the performers exited at the wrong times or it seemed so due to the echo of the music. At certain moments the music was slightly loud and drowned the performers. Many of the songs dragged on, so the pacing could have been more effectively executed. Though the music was off at times, the director's decision to have most of the songs performed center sage was a wise one. Also the implementation of actual white characters that were competent in their roles came as a great surprise to the audience and heightened the realism.
Throughout the film, we learn that each woman has setbacks within her household. One sister has a terrible drinking problem and ultimately loses her job due to excessive drinking and tardiness. The second sister has had several pregnancies that each result in miscarriages due to high stress. As a therapist, there are several different elements to review.
After April and Roger search desperately for Cheryl, they look for several weeks, and have no idea where she has gone. One night Cheryl’s friend Nancy calls April, and explains that she was leaving with her, but she had left suddenly and believes she is going to do something bad. April remembers that Cheryl told her how their mother committed suicide, by jumping off the Louis Bridge. When they arrive at the bridge a group of people say they saw a women jumped off and commit suicide about five minutes before they arrived.
The main character Pat who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, displayed signs of manic episodes such as: fast talking, rambling with words, and no sleep. There were about 3 scenes of Pat waking his parents up early in the morning because he was looking for something, or could not wait to tell them something in the morning. Throughout most of the film, Pat exhibits a lot of delusions. Before hospitalization, it is briefly mentioned that Pat was accusing his wife and another teacher (who ironically was the man who this wife cheated on) embezzling money from him. After hospitalization, there were delusions that him and his wife were perfect for each other and they were going to be work through their marriage when that clearly was not the
It can be assumed that her mother has a mental disorder that prevented her from being able to take care of her
One of its numerous strengths was the costuming and set. This musical would not have been the same had these elements not come together to transport the viewer. In addition to the costuming and the set, the actors were very well cast. Each actor was in a role that fit them and they portrayed their characters very well. For example, the man who played Glen really seemed like a greedy Wall Street worker. The choreography was also well done. It fit true to the style of dance in the 1980s and added to the immersion experience. The only thing that could have made this experience better would be to add more music. This may just be a personal preference, but when I see a musical I like for the music to be central like it is in Hamilton or Les Miserables. However, this musical was very good and not much could be added to enhance the
One summer her parents sent her to a fun camp that was supposed to help her lose weight. But it wasn’t fun and she did lose weight, but in a terrible way. They feed the campers very little and made them do different kinds of exercise constantly. When they got to call home a person would sit near the phone and make sure they didn’t tell their parents the truth. Finally one day a child was so overworked that he died and all the campers got to go home. After many more years of bullying Daelyn tried to kill herself unsuccessfully. The last time she tried to kill herself, she damaged her throat and vocal cords and all of her food has to be put in a blender for her to eat, which ended up with her losing a lot of weight and finally being skinny. But now she gets made fun of for her neck brace. And now that she has found www.through-the-light.com she finally has made a plan to kill herself. Santana is a boy who lives across the street from Daelyn’s Catholic school and always goes to talk to her while she’s waiting for her parents. He had Hodgkin's lymphoma, a type of cancer that he almost died from earlier in life and now it's back. Kim and Chip are Daelyn’s parents who are constantly worried about what she’s doing and are on a 24/7 suicide watch, unaware of the website she is using on her computer because it is untraceable. Emily starts talking to Daelyn during choir, unaware that Daelyn was also overweight
The sound design and choreography intensified the overall musical. They created the time, place, and mood through rhythm and great energy. The actors had wireless, behind the ear mikes, that attached to the mike pack which amplified the sound, making it very clear. I could easily understand what they were talking about or singing.
In the article, Mental Illness and the Family: Recognizing Warning Signs and How to Cope by www.mentalhealthamerica.net writes, “ Adults, Young Adults, and Adolecents may suffer from prolonged depression, delusions, hallucinations, suicide thoughts, and substance abuse” ( ¶ 10). This is significant because Diana suffers from all of these symptoms” (¶ 3). Throughout the musical, Diana’s relationship with her husband Dan has been sporadic. Dan wants the family back to normal however, he knows that is going to be very hard. In the song “ It’s Gonna Be Good” sang by Dan, Gabe, Henry, and Natalie. Dan sings, “ It’s gonna be great!/ It’s gonna be great. The sex is still amazing/ And we don’t stay up that late./ It’s almost been a month and she’s happy as a clam…/ Do I look great? I am.” (28). It’s been awhile since Diana’s last visit to the doctor and everything seems to be going fine. Then Diana begins to wonder why is Dan is staying with her through her illness in the song “Why Stay” sang by Diana and Natalie; the song says “ Why stay ?/ Why not simply give in/ And get on with livin’,/ so everyone knows you tried/ But somehow something died/ On the way. / So tell me why you stay?” (84). Diana is questioning why Dan would stay with the problems she put him through. Diana feels as if Dan will be better off leaving her because now he can experience his own happiness and interest in
Every performance was presented with charm. The flashing, changing colors seem to go along with the performances. The director was humorous. The performers outfits were on point too. I liked the color coding of the vocalists, Jeremy, Jordan, and Rowan. Also, Julie wore a pretty suede dress and had a great voice. It was nice to see her come out for the 2nd time to sing. When Spencer kept playing his saxophone in some of the performances, it was just amazing. Some of my favorite performances were Sittin on the Dock of the Bay, Ain’t too Proud to Beg, In a Sentimental Mood, and more. It really made me feel like I was in New Orleans all over again. I absolutely love Otis Redding and The Temptations music, so I wasn’t new to these songs they played. I was sitting in the back (R-125) where I felt comfortable to bob my head to the music. If I ever come back to see another concert, I will make sure to get a seat in the back again. I adore Jordan that did sung the Temptations song. I thought it was exciting to see his enthusiasm while on stage keeping us engaged, but everyone did great in their own way. The song by Duke Ellington made me feel melancholy, the piece was soft. I just couldn’t believe how well everyone contributed and gave an outstanding
...f the bad that is going on in her real life, so she would have a happy place to live. With the collapse of her happy place her defense was gone and she had no protection from her insanity anymore. This caused all of her blocked out thoughts to swarm her mind and turn her completely insane. When the doctor found her, he tried to go in and help her. When the doctor finally got in he fainted because he had made so many positive changes with her and was utterly distressed when he found out that it was all for naught. This woman had made a safety net within her mind so that she would not have to deal with the reality of being in an insane asylum, but in the end everything failed and it seems that what she had been protecting herself from finally conquered her. She was then forced to succumb to her breakdown and realize that she was in the insane asylum for the long run.
Georgia Byrd (Queen Latifah) works in Kragen's Department Store in New Orleans where she demonstrates and sells cookware. She longs to open her own restaurant but she is very practical and down-to-earth and doesn't seriously consider that as an option. She has a crush on another employee at the store, Sean Williams (LL Cool J), who seems to return the feeling. However, both are too shy to pursue a relationship. One day Georgia has an accident and bumps her head hard on a cabinet.
First, the orchestra did an outstanding job with the music. The music felt appropriate with the actors singing, especially with “You Be in My Heart” hitting me in the guts. The problem with the orchestra though was where they were and the sound. I watched this show on the third row of the left side of the auditorium, and being right behind the orchestra, anything that was on the left of the stage was something I could not see because the orchestra was in the way. I’m aware that the placement of the orchestra was the only available space, but during my watch, I was bothered that I wasn’t able to see things that weren’t elevated on left stage.
