“In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn.” Phil Collins. I have learned a great amount of information within the many topics covered in this class. More specifically, I have learned about some of the most influential teachers in the world and throughout history. While I already knew quite a bit about the teachings of Jesus, I was relatively unfamiliar with the teachings of Confucius and Socrates. In fact, Confucius’s philosophy and beliefs were so powerful and well liked by his followers that Confucius’s beliefs became a religion called Confucianism. Why may this be of any importance to me? Confucius’s beliefs of morals and social relationships has helped modify and grow in just that exact area of my life. As a way to keep out of human affairs between the church and the state, Confucius preached that “To keep one’s distance from the gods and spirits while showing them reverence can be called wisdom” 547). This quote really stood out to me because of Confucius’s consideration of other’s beliefs. There have been moments in my life where I have made the mistake of completely disregarding people’s religion or beliefs. In the past few weeks while learning more and more about various cultures, I have found it interesting to dig deep into other cultures and consider all possibilities and beliefs without making the mistake of being contempt. Confucius’s emphasis of social philosophy has certainly helped to teach me to interpret and look into other cultures in a way different ever than before. Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher who called anything into question in pursuit to find the truth. Socrates once stated that “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing” (“Socrates Quotes”). This teaching of Socrates 's helps to inform people that it is wise to know that there are questions that will never be discovered. This is so powerful to me because it deals with a problem that I am challenged with regarding to my faith. Like I stated before, I have many unanswered questions that I desire to have an answer for, but one of the key parts of any religion are the questions. Socrates appreciated the fact that he didn’t always know what to do, and he expressed that “our prayers should be for blessings in general, for God knows best what is good for us” (“Socrates Quotes”). God has a way of sheltering his children from truly knowing everything about the world around us and our existence as a whole. It is obvious that Socrates was at peace knowing that he had no real control over his life, and he willingly trusted that God knew what would be best in the end. God keeps us in the dark to protect us from the evil in the world, and to help strengthen us in our faith. To begin, Confucianism is a system of philosophical and ethical teachings founded by Confucius. Confucianism was the code of ethics accepted as the certified religion of most of the immense empires in the territory since the Han Dynasty. Confucianism provided an outline of ethical and religious beliefs that most of the Chinese expanded to make other religions such as Daoism and Legalism. To expand, Confucianism was founded by Confucius and his beliefs on the political and social order of China. Confucius believed that everything would fall into place if children had respect for their parents and if the rulers were honest. In Confucianism, specific roles were followed by each person in the family. The head of the family, the father, was the one primarily in control and then it was the oldest son that was next in line. Confucius had the belief that a ruler has to be everything he wants
Schultz also stressed the importance of a biblical worldview in the teacher. As the leader in each classroom the students will adapt their teacher’s beliefs, values and finally actions. If they are taught by a teacher who holds a dualistic view of dividing the sacred and the secular, or a postmodern or modern worldview, it will adversely affect the ability of that child to develop Christ centered wisdom based upon the Word of God. Schultz, in referring to the education of children, stated “anything that hinders their moral and spiritual development is the epitome of child abuse.” (2006, p. 163). As such, our curriculum, teaching methods, and moral example, must all reflect a biblical worldview that will evangelize and discipline each student to know and love Jesus Christ.
Confucius was a philosopher, political intellect and an educator whose philosophies have significantly prejudiced not only the Chinese principles but the entire world evolution. He lived through the “Spring” and “Autumn” epoch of Chinese history, when east central China was separated over a dozen fighting states. The inordinate ailment and grief he saw swayed his political thoughts, which highlighted command, grading and the rule of a compassionate self-governing state.
Socrates put one’s quest for wisdom and the instruction of others above everything else in life. A simple man both in the way he talked and the wealth he owned, he believed that simplicity in whatever one did was the best way of acquiring knowledge and passing it unto others. He is famous for saying that “the unexplained life is not worth living.” He endeavored therefore to break down the arguments of those who talked with a flowery language and boasted of being experts in given subjects (Rhees 30). His aim was to show that the person making a claim on wisdom and knowledge was in fact a confused one whose clarity about a given subject was far from what they claimed. Socrates, in all his simplicity never advanced any theories of his own but rather aimed at bringing out the worst in his interlocutors.
It is said that history is shaped by the lives of great men. Great men are leaders. They bring about change; they improve the lives of others; they introduce new ideas, models, and theories to society. Most of the world's religions were founded, developed, or discovered by great men. Two particular religions - Christianity and Buddhism - developed in different parts of the world, under different circumstances, and in different social atmospheres. Confucianism is a philosophy and way of life formed in China by Confucius, an early Chinese philosopher. It began as a simple concept with ideals of personal virtue, simple filial piety, and basic gender distinctions and social inequalities. But, over time with the emergence of Neo-Confucianism it began to transform into a way of life that was degrading towards women with certain hostilities towards rivaling religions. In its early period, from around 500 B.C.E to the Common Era, Confucianism changed in that it became the leading belief system and a major part of Chinese tradition. From the transition into the Common Era to the end of the Classical time period, Confucianism was altered because of a loss of popularity following the collapse of the Han dynasty and the corruption in the governing political system. The idea of responsibility is extensive beyond the precincts of morals and holds close to the minutiae of daily living.
Confucianism is a religious philosophy formed by the Chinese philosopher Kung-fu-Tsu. This philosophy came out of need during the warring states period of Chinese history. K'ung-fu-Tsu was a teacher at the hundred schools. His prime concern was the improvement of society. Confucianism has no gods, and the only written history of this religion is in the Analects, a collection of his responses to his disciple's questions. K'ung-fu-Tsu believed that the improvement of society was the responsibility of the ruler and that the quality of government depended on the ruler's moral character. This new way meant concern for others and adherance to the golden rule. Confucianism has had a greater and longer lasting influence on China than that of any other religious philosophy.

Confucianism can easily be thought of as a religion because of the ideas that were brought about during the Shang and Zhou dynasty. The virtues, and even the societal rules that are pivotal in Confucianism can be thought of in a religious context without strain. The debate will continue, but for some, these arguments are considered enough to end the debate, at least in their minds.

Confucius was born a mandarin under the name Kongzi. It was developed around 550 B.C. In its earliest form Confucianism was primarily a system of ethical concepts for the control of society. It saw man as a social creature that is bound to his fellow men by jen, or “humanity.” Jen is expressed through the five relationships—sovereign and subject, parent and child, elder and younger brother, husband and wife, and friend and friend. Of these, the filial relation is most important.

For many centuries, Confucianism has been widely revered by the Chinese for its emphasis on morality. Confucius, who lived from 551 to 479 BCE, is different to most philosophers in that he showed no interest questioning his existence, the possibility of a God, or the reality that he seemed to live in; instead he focused on the human relations side of philosophy as it was his belief that people should “give (themselves) earnestly to the duties due to men … (and) keep aloof from (spiritual beings)” (Confucius 195). By negating the metaphysical side of philosophy, he was able to devote himself to mold his disciples into ideal gentleman who were morally righteous, and were able to benefit society. He believed in the importance of individuals who knew their roles in an well-structured society, that was a feudal system. In his opinion, the ideal gentleman should be obedient to his elders, have humanness and be morally righteous. Through his teachings, he was able to reform an entire country; the Chinese found Confucianism to embody practices of humaneness that they could apply in their daily lives through his religion.
