A dystopian society is a degraded society and very little good is happening while a utopian society is a world of peace. Children of Men, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, is a dystopian society caused from the world being struck by infertility. In “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas”, by Ursula Le Guin, a child is kept in a basement to keep the utopian society the way it is. Children of Men and “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” could not be any more different although they share similarities as well. The stories are of utopian and dystopian societies and the actions that take place make the societies very similar. Both stories have things that are hidden from people. “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” has “it” hidden away under a building in a basement. Children of Men had Kee, the first pregnant woman on earth in 18 years, being hidden from the people and government. The difference is that in Omelas the people knew that “it” was in the building. In Children of Men the people did not know, except for a select group, about Kee. Not only were people hiding things, the were also leaving where they were living. In “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” another theme it had in common with Children of Men is people leaving because they know or feel that something is not right. Theo and Kee make the journey to a buoy where a ship called Tomorrow would rescue them. In Omelas people leave because they know that what they are doing to keep society the way it is, is wrong. Kee was different because she was pregnant. No one had seen a pregnant woman for 18 years (36:51). It is like that in Omelas too except in Omelas people had already known about the situation. “It” is being kept from the people but they know it is in the room. “It” is kept from the people because it is different from everyone else. “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” and Children of Men are similar because in both the story and in the film something is hidden. In the story, “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” “It” is kept in the basement of a building. In the film, Children of Men, Kee is kept from everyone for a majority of the film. They are similar in the way of keeping things secret or hidden, but they are different societies
