A dystopian society is a degraded society and very little good is happening while a utopian society is a world of peace. Children of Men, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, is a dystopian society caused from the world being struck by infertility. In “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas”, by Ursula Le Guin, a child is kept in a basement to keep the utopian society the way it is. Children of Men and “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” could not be any more different although they share similarities as well. The stories are of utopian and dystopian societies and the actions that take place make the societies very similar. Both stories have things that are hidden from people. “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” has “it” hidden away under a building in a basement. Children of Men had Kee, the first pregnant woman on earth in 18 years, being hidden from the people and government. The difference is that in Omelas the people knew that “it” was in the building. In Children of Men the people did not know, except for a select group, about Kee. Not only were people hiding things, the were also leaving where they were living. In “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” another theme it had in common with Children of Men is people leaving because they know or feel that something is not right. Both stories show the characters inequality with their lives as women bound to a society that discriminates women. The two stories were composed in different time frames of the women’s rights movement; it reveals to the readers, that society was not quite there in the fair treatment towards the mothers, daughters, and wives of United States in either era. Inequality is the antagonist that both authors created for the characters. Those experiences might have helped that change in mankind to carve a path for true equality among men and women.

When children of Omelas visit the child for first time, they are shocked and sickened, feel angry and they plan to do something for the child but do not do anything. They know that it would be a good thing indeed but they can not pursuit it in exchange of prosperity and beauty of Omelas. In the story, it is mentioned as: “To exchange all the goodness and grace of every life in Omelas for that single, small improvement: to throw away the happiness of thousands for the chance of the happiness of one: that would be to let guilt within the walls indeed. The terms are strict and absolute; there may not even be a kind word spoken to the child” (Le Guin: page-6).
Omelas begins amidst a festival in the seemingly utopian city of Omelas. People are in a holiday spirit on this day, as they are every other day in Omelas. Mirth and good cheer seems to be the moods of all of the citizens. Though blissful, these people are by no means ignorant: They were not simple folks, you see, though they were happy...They were not less complex than us. The seemingly perfect city offers something to please every taste: festivals, good-natured orgies, drugs that aren’t habit-forming, beer, and so on. The citizens of Omelas have a complete love of life. There is no war, no hunger, no strife; in short, Omelas seems like the pinnacle of perfection.
The Ones Who Walked Away from Omelas is a short story written by Ursula Le Guin. In her story, Le Guin creates a model Utilitarian society in which the majority of its citizens are devoid of suffering; allowing them to become an expressive, artistic population. Le Guin’s unrelenting pursuit of making the reader imagine a rich, happy and festival abundant society mushrooms and ultimately climaxes with the introduction of the outlet for all of Omelas’ avoided misfortune. Le Guin then introduces a coming of age ritual in which innocent adolescents of the city are made aware of the byproduct of their happiness. She advances with a scenario where most of these adolescents are extremely burdened at first but later devise a rationalization for the “wretched one’s” situation. Le Guin has imagined a possible contemporary Utilitarian society with the goal to maximize the welfare of the greatest number of people. On the contrary, Kant would argue that using the child as a mere means is wrong and argue that the living conditions of the child are not universalizable. The citizens of Omelas must face this moral dilemma for all of their lives or instead choose to silently escape the city altogether.
The short story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” by Ursula LeGuin's is a story about a joyous city with a small town feel, or is it. The story takes place during the Festival of Summer. Children ride decorated horses in races and are seen playing in the fields, in their bare feet. The day is sunny and bright with music filling the air. On the surface, Omelas appears to be a quite waterfront community with pleasant citizens “merry women carrying their babies and chatting as they walked” (512). LeGuin’s describes the citizens of this small community as “not simple folk, though they were happy” (512). If fact, the citizens of Omelas are smart and cultured. Loosing the happiness that one gets in exchange from injustice in the world is an action that is unthinkable to humankind. The right ethical decision has to be made to entirely resolve the issue, but making that right ethical decision is impossible with the other factors of life such as personal happiness. In “The One Who Walks Away From Omelas” the reader is taught the importance of making the right ethical decision and can relate these morals in their own community. One cannot just choose to ignore, one cannot just choose to observe and still do nothing, and one cannot just simply walk away. The reader is taught the momentous moral of not being a bystander, the importance of moral responsibility, and the great significance in learning to overcome the ethical issues in society.
Alfonso Cuarón’s movie “The Children of Men” depicts a catastrophic future for humanity. Although it is portrayed to show events in the future approximately the year 2027 what is interesting is that the society in which the people live in is very similar to the world we live in today. The buildings, stores, cars (although weird-looking) do not look at all fancy as one might think the future to look. Cuarón’s look on the future is not a positive, hopeful one as his movie foreshadows sorrows, miseries and gloom waiting to be welcomed into our world. His movie though does indeed go parallel with the political and societal events of today.
I believe Le Guin is vague in her description of Omelas because details like its laws and its technology are not important to the overall messages of the story.
