“Silky” Bob’s ambition is to be rich and that wish causes him to be a criminal wanted in Chicago. Peyton Farquhar’s aim is for the Confederate army to be the best and that yearning causes him to try to burn down the Owl Creek Bridge. It is the craving that is molded in the protagonists that caused them to do horrific things which led to the position they are in right now. Every action has a reaction. Their aspirations aren’t the only things both characters have in common, but they have ethics too. Even though “Silky” Bob is a sought after criminal, he still decides to live up to his promise and assemble with Jimmy. Bob has an abundant quantity of money, but he didn’t disregard his friend. Peyton Farquhar is about to be hanged for his actions, but instead of thinking about himself, he thinks about his family the entire time and how he can go back to them. In the end, both stories revealed a huge surprise that lead to life threatening situations for the characters, which are either going to jail or
“There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn't true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true” (Kierkegaard)- Misleading oneself by accepting things as true or valid when they are not is a common phenomenon of nearly every human being, especially when faced with life changing of threatening situations. Self-deception can therefore be considered an option to escape reality in order to prevent oneself from dealing with the weight of a situation. Basically, those strong influencing psychological forces keep us from acknowledging a threatening situation or truth. However, oftentimes people do not realize that they are deceiving themselves, for it is mostly the action of the subconscious mind to protect especially the psychological well- being. This psychological state is depicted and in Ambrose Bierce’s short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”. He shows that people try to escape reality and seek refuge in self-deception when confronted with life-threatening situations, through characterization, alternate point of view, and the fluidity of time.
Particularly, Peyton Farquhar was an innocent civilian and a family man willing to help the southern cause. In part II of “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” a Confederate soldier stopped at Peyton’s plantation and discussed about burning down the bridge. The soldier implied that Peyton should do it. As a result, Peyton went down to the bridge in an attempt to burn the bridge. Afterwards, we learned that the Confederate soldier was a federal scout and that he had framed
Bierce broke this story down into three parts. The first part of the narrative creates an atmosphere with the setting at Owl Creek Bridge. Great detail is told here as to who is present at the scene, what is happening, what the scene looks like, etc. But the reader only receives ideas and thoughts from one person, Peyton Farquar. The first part as like the other two parts of this story is written very systematically and clear. Even with such a structured set up, the author still manages to put great anticipation and fearsome emotion into the near end of the first part of this story. At this point the author makes the reader think Peyton is devising a way to set his hands free from the rope thereby beginning his journey to escape home.
In Ambrose Bierces " An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" two private soldiers of the Federal army were appointed by a sergeant to lynch Peyton Farquhar from a elderly suspended bridge because of his attempt to aid the Confederate forces. He was to be executed for aiding the confederate forces. He knew his death was at his fingertips and couldn’t help ponder its arrival. He looks at the river below observing the depth of the river. Early on in the story Ambrose portrays Peyton, from his perspective, seeing a shallow river. The fact that the river is shallow and will defiantly kill Peyton distracts the reader from the truth behind the mans observation. Peytonseeing the river shallow is foreshadowing the actual depth of the river. In fact the river is so deep that when the rope snaps it seems he falls endlessly in the water. The reader is eagerly awaiting the soon death of Peyton, then suddenly surprised while the river cushions his fall. Several other soldiers were relentlessly targeting the man at ...

The short story starts by creating curiosity with the revelation that a man will be hung in the owl creek bridge. At that moment the reader does not know the reasons for which the man will be sentenced. In the second section, the name of the man who will be hanged is mentioned, the motives for his crime and how he was captured. The final section illustrates the struggle Peyton Farquhar was facing and the events that went through your mind at that moment. He imagined/dream that he escape and peaceful return to their home. But the reality is another and his life ends in darkness and silence. (Bierce 201-209)
...ony, and narration. Without these exceptional parts the theme would not have as much meaning and depth in its perception to the reader. The symbols show to the reader that there is a hidden message to what is going to happen in the end and hints to the theme of the story but is purposely ignored. Irony brings attention to the conscious or thoughts during the story and the unlikelihood of actually dying at the end shows how strong our minds are. Narration is brought to show the theme of his expected death and a diversion from the reality of the readers thoughts. The story is saturated with literary elements that help prove the theme of “An Occurrence of Owl Creek Bridge”.
The plot structure allows the mind to wonder and ask itself questions as to why Farquhar is being prepared to hang, or how it was so easy for him to escape down the river. The central theme adds extra interest into the setting, plot structure, and point of view. The fictional elements used in the story help the readers to better understand the events and the order of which they occur. “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” used the setting, point of view, and plot structure to setup the unique theme that the story holds of its free flowing nature of
Even when he is visualizing the abscond from the soldiers, the bridge is existent and has the soldiers on it shooting at him while he’s in the water. In the end Peyton Farquhar, “ … swung gently from side to side beneath the timbers of the Owl Creek Bridge” (Bierce 6). This scene was at the end, when he got through all of the obstacles put in his way and was rewarded with
Farquhar and his wife encounter a Federal scout describing the North’s gain of Owl Creek Bridge. “They (the Union) have reached the Owl Creek bridge, put it in order and built a stockade on the north bank . . . . declaring that any civilian caught interfering with the railroad, its bridges, tunnels or trains will be summarily hanged” (147). This verifies that the Federal scout is warning the southern man and his wife to not engage in any questionable behavior against the Union. The man’s devotion to the South is being tested, as the visitors are posing a threat to the area. “That opportunity, he (Farquhar) felt, would come, as it comes to all in war time. Meanwhile he did what he could. No service was too humble for him to perform in aid of the South” (147). This shows that Farquhar won’t allow the Union’s takeover without him meddling in their affairs. Avoiding the Federal scout’s warning, he launches an attack on the Union, landing himself on the edge of Owl Creek bridge. “Looking down into the swift water twenty feet below. The man’s (Farquhar) hands were behind his back, the wrists bound with a cord. A rope closely encircled his neck” (145). This illustrates that Farquhar has been caught by the Union after his attack
“Peyton Farquhar was dead; his body, with a broken neck, swung gently from side to side to beneath the timber of the Owl Creek Bridge” (Bierce 589). Surprisingly this is the end of the story. The author, Ambrose Bierce, creates suspense, mystery, and tension, by the order of event and the use of flashback throughout this short story. Bierce, allows the reader to believe Farquhar escaped his hanging.

The Federal soldiers execute orders in “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”, which Ambrose Bierce (Ambrose 551) characterizes Peyton Farquhar’s impending demise as he encounter delusions, exemplifies profound keen senses, and experiences a perplexing fight-or-flight mental cognizance in an escape toward a perceived freedom, and nonetheless, remains a “standing civilian and a student in a hanging” (554).
The story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce, focuses on the relationship between fantasy and reality. Bierce shows the form of the main character, Peyton Farquhar, who is a slave owner in the Southern state, refusing to believe his death when he is hanged on the Owl Creek Bridge as he did participate at the front lines of the Civil War. Peyton Farquhar persuaded himself that he had escaped the hanging by jumping in the water although he never really enters the water. Bierce illustrates Farquhar’s fantasy of escaping by the imagination of Farquhar dodging bullets fired by the captain and the soldier who are responsible for his death. In fact, Bierce even exaggerated the illusion of escaping by Farquhar swimming under the
In the story After 20 Years, the author conveys a credible message on friendship. The two friends, Bob and Jimmy, were childhood companions. Eventually, they realized that they would part ways, and, most likely, not see each other anymore. They made a deal that in twenty years exactly, they would meet at the 'Big Joe' Brady's restaurant at ten-o-clock. That was the exact date and time that they had departed. As Bob is telling the police man this story, he doesn't know that he is actually under arrest. Then, who Bob thinks is Jimmy, finally shows up and they start to talk about their lives and what has been going on. However, the man Bob is talking to is not Jimmy, but he is actually a police man. After Bob realizes this, he also realizes that
