The struggle for the pursuit of happiness and prosperity has always been an extremely relevant American culture and society—most strive to be at the top (e.g. in some sort of alpha position). “The Death of a Salesman” and “A Raisin in the Sun” are two stories that delve into this struggle. Both are about two classic American families, specifically two men, between the 1940’s and 1960’s that portray the common way of life along with many tribulations that come with it. “The Death of a Salesman” is about a middle-class American white family living in New York, while, “A Raisin in the Sun” is a lower middle-class African American family living in Chicago. These families might seem normal, but they actually have many problems and differences that differentiate them from other families and themselves within their own family. Though, both families share a few similarities’, which makes these two stories relevant subjects for a comparative essay. First, in both families the father is the central focal point in both stories. The fathers are portrayed as antagonist and protagonist because of how often their roles change in their respective stories. Willy’s flaws could be seen as his way to achieve success for his family. Willy considers popular opinion and personal integrity to be very important, though it backfired on him. For example, being faithful to his wife and not lying to his family; but that is irrelevant if no one knows. Neither “The Death of a Salesman” or “A Raisin in the Sun” state that having money is in itself a wrong, which in return allows for one to achieve the American dream.
