The Game of Love
Pride and Prejudice, adapted from Jane Austen’s book, takes place in the early 19th century as the play follows the life of the Bennets and four sisters’ quest of finding the perfect husband. This adaptation incorporates some modern culture and adds a comedic twist to the original plot making it playful and seemingly filled with never-ending obnoxious sounds. The set at the WaterTower Theater puts viewers in the middle of the action and has furniture with wheels making it easy to transition from scene to scene. The costume designs are very clever as actors can easily change out of them making it possible for actors to take on multiple roles with men taking on women's roles. The play opens with a chaotic scene with actors running after each other, yelling and screaming as music blares. It then moves to Mrs. Bennet (Wendy Welch) urging her daughters to find a husband, preferably handsome and wealthy. The Bennet family comprises of Mr. Bennet (Bob Hess, who also plays family friend, Charlotte), the sarcastic father and four sisters: Lizzy (Jenny Ledel), Lydia (Steph Garrett), Jane (Kate Paulsen), and Mary (Justin Duncan) who is the “peculiar” sister and the laughing stock of the play. Mr. Bingley (Justin Duncan) and Mr. Darcy (John-Michael Marrs) take the scene in a frantic ball as well as Bingley’s sister played by Brandon Potter who takes on three roles, each fabulous, in the play. As the story moves along, the sisters meet Mr. Wickham (Brandon Potter), a militia officer who has a history with Mr. Darcy and Mr. Collins (also Potter), a pompous and quite foolish clergyman who tries to force Lizzy to marry him. The wild first act comes to an end in another frantic party that includes an unnecessary disco ball and more loud music. Playwright, Kate Hamill does a great job making this adaptation of Pride and Prejudice enjoyable but at many times tries to incorporate too much as the first act can become a madhouse with constant shrieks and balls (literally and figuratively) bouncing
