The purpose of this article is to make the reader aware of students losing their critical thinking and connection to the environment by not being engaged with nature as Giracca was taught when was in college. In the article she explains how classes like Ellis’s class have become obsolete since the early twentieth century, and during this time outdoor biology studies were mandatory for students, because as Giracca puts it, “Educators believed that cultivating students’ awareness of their natural surroundings was essential.”. She describes how Ellis’s class
According to Allender, Rector, and Warner (2014), public health is a combination of both an art and a science (2014). The mission of public health nursing is to promote health, prevent disease and ultimately prolong life (Allender et al., 2014). In order for this to occur an assessment must take place. An aggregate or community assessment begins with a collection of data. This includes: the community’s health needs, risks, environmental conditions, financial resources through local census data, and a windshield survey (Allender et al., 2014). Through public health nursing, communities can collectively come together to help promote an overall better health standing.

I volunteered at the Activity Center for my Service Learning project. My duties were to watch the kids who participated in the after school program, play with them and help them with their home homework. I really enjoyed interacting with the African-American people and culture. I learned many things from the African-American population I worked with. I learned how the Activity Center staff teaches the after school kids good manners and behavior. I mentioned in one of my service learning journals that the staff was very strict and treated the kids like prisoners, but I came to the realization that maybe that is how they teach the kids discipline. I had the opportunity to be around all the Activity Center kids and interact with them. They were kids just like any other kids. Of course they are kids and sometimes they did misbehave but overall they were really great kids. I noticed that most of the boys want to be more independent of them, but they were such sweet kids.
Theater 180 addressed the quest question of how do people understand and engage in community life? Through this class I’ve gained a better understanding of what civic engagement is. At the start of this semester I had very minimal knowledge about civic engagement. As far as I knew civic engagement was just volunteering but nothing much beyond that. With this class I have learned that civic engagement is much more than just volunteer work.
Introduction and Background: One of the most important aspect of youth studies is to find ways not only to educate young people about their career and to “keep them off the streets” but the field also helps to educate them about their environment and surroundings. There are after school programs that educate young people in several ways about the environment and have them engage in wanting to learn more, as well as have some sort of awareness about their environment. Some programs are about fun and educational and solar renewable energy, a cleaner and greener environment so forth. There also program that is for young people that are willing to fight for the right and bettering the environment.
Activities and philosophies that advocate for the connecting of communities with socially sentient beliefs and actions is what have come to be referred to as civic engagement. They are thus individual or collective actions aimed at addressing issues that are deemed to be of public concern. They can be manifested in many ways including; public service, civil activity, service-learning, crusading and advocacy to mention but a few as the list is endless.

Most citizens are unaware that ocean acidification even exists unless they have taken an environmental science class, which is usually not required in high schools around the nation. Requiring an environmental science class, or a similar class in which students learn about different aspects of climate change, could help motivate people to change their personal habits when they learn how ocean acidification affects both aquatic ecosystems and human communities. However, this education only directly influences current and future students, while adults and industries continue to practice environmentally harmful habits, unaware or unconcerned of their effects on the environment and on themselves Protection of affected species. Adding species that depend on coral reefs to the endangered species list helps maintain aquatic biodiversity, which is vital for the conservation of ecosystems. Nevertheless, simply encouraging the protection of these species will not combat all aspects of ocean acidification; namely, it is not likely to decrease coral bleaching, which is the most urgent issue.
Commitment to community is a requirement for contemporary Americans and vital to its survival. “Love thy neighbor as thyself” is the unselfish act of sharing: from a cup of sugar to a wealth of information to the guardianship of all children involved and the protection of every individual in that said community. Whether that community consists of the “Classic Neighborhood, those with a common set of goals, or those who share a common identity” the thread that holds this matrix together is always woven into the shared identity as well as responsibility of all involved. (Redmond, 2010). A community cannot continue to exist through the will of withdrawn individuals who arms only embrace themselves and have no involvement whatsoever with neighbors one door away.
The entire community plays an essential role in the growth and development of children within our community. As a school leader, building an inclusive school culture that is open and friendly to all stakeholders using a variety of effective methods is crucial. There is no magic formula to incorporating a positive school culture, much depends on the leadership of the campus. The leadership on campus cultivates the climate providing support and respect for everyone invested in the student’s education.

Community engagement is the active participation of local residents and community groups in the decisions that affect their lives (Herefordshire Council, 2013). Therefore, community engagement should be about engaging in open communication to ensure the council understands the needs of the local community.
The thought of community service was boring to me before I began my volunteer work. I was fearful starting my community service although I knew I had to do it. I used to do community service with a group of friends in high school, I was afraid here because it was my first time working alone. I was scared of not being able to make any friends because socializing with other people is my weakness, although I can understand and speak a little Bahasa Indonesia. Where I earned my hours did not even matter to me. I just wanted to get it done. To my surprise it was not what I expected. Community service was not a painful experience; it was a very enjoyable and beneficial experience. On the 7th of September 2017 (Thursday), I worked at the Central Lab
