Marc (pseudonym), the student that is attending the community college grew up near the area of the school. Marc is currently attending American River College and is currently in his second year. Overall he has completed three semesters of general education. This is third semester which also includes him taking courses that entails his major preparation courses. He is participating in Puente and TRIO Journey as well as TRIO STEM which is for first generation students that helps students identify the gap in education that they did not receive in high school or at home. He is currently decided on Electrical Engineering as his major. I have the opportunity to see Marc in two different spaces, one in the HUB, the center of students services on campus. The other is having the ability to see him in the Human Career Development course as part of being part the TRIO Journey program. In this class, I can also further assess his characteristics as an individual and in a collectivistic environment. The key presenting issue with Marc is that he is a community college student that is stuck, regarding his decision towards his transfer, major and location of schools. …show more content…
The issue stems as he is from a Latino background and he has familial obligations that he must obey to first.
However, Marc comes off very friendly, in my initial response to him as he interacts with me and others is his attempt to make friends in the space. Marc identifies as a 19-year-old Latino and Native American male. He is tall and has broad shoulders. His body proportions and stamina may result in health concerns which I am not aware of yet. He has a slightly low and deep voice. He presents himself as a nice and caring individual. He dresses accordingly to his daily tasks. He is well groomed and does not exhibit any neglect physically. Marc is a happy person even when he has things on his mind that is worrisome to others. He has his priorities straight as it comes to his educational goals and
attainment. Marc, in the second session, he disclosed that he was autistic. This is something that he was not afraid to tell me during the first session. I think that his autism does not really show until he discloses that himself. At this point, I have met with him three times and Marc does not display any of the symptoms of autism spectrum that I am aware of. Marc does display certain body postures or verbal and nonverbal cues that suggest that he is autistic. According Autism Speaks, autistic characterizes social interaction difficulties, communication challenges and the tendency to engage in repetitive behavior which I am able to see with Marc out side of the counseling space (Autism Speaks Symptoms, 2018). He has the inability to establish long term friendship as he has disclosed that. Along with the social difficulties, I have been noticing that it is quite hard for him make eye contact, which I have also seen with his interactions with others in the HUB, the student service area. Marc also likes to plan ahead and pack multiple bags to campus as he stays on campus all day on certain days of the week. The reason is that there is only one car and his mom needs it and he gets dropped off before he heads out to work. There are no legal or ethical concerns that have been disclosed at the time. Marc does not suffer from any other known conditions other than autism that I am aware of. Also, he states that he is happy and content with where is at and where he wants to go as well as what he sees his future hold for him.
Every year there are thousands of students planning and tracking their goals. Seniors in high school are faced with the tough challenge, while the Juniors are left to worry another year. Finally, the point comes a student’s life where they must make one of the most important decisions in their educational lifetime. That choice is, which college to attend, and it is a very scrutinous process. Two of such colleges are the University of Iowa and St. Ambrose University, and although similarities like majors and minors are evident, there are many other differences including student life.
One major decision one must make after exiting high school is whether to go to a university or go to community college. In the article “Two Year Are Better Than Four,” written by Liz Addison. She expressed her opinion on the significance of community colleges in comparison with the university. She stated that community college do not receive the acknowledgment and appreciation that they deserve. “what’s the matter with colleges?,” (Addison 255).

The author, Julia Brookshire Everett commenced the article, “Public Community Colleges: Creating Access and Opportunities for First Generation College Students”, by first characterizing first- generation college students and also expounding on the difficulties first-generation students encountered when acquiring post-secondary degrees. According to Everett (2015), the term ‘first- generation college student’ was first coined in the 1960s in order to regulate student eligibility for federally financed programs to aid students from low-income households.
Throughout this course, topics such as the transition from high school to college, learning skills, self-discovery, and career exploration have been discussed. Conversations occurred concerning the challenges and benefits of private and public colleges as well as the transition from high school to college. We also talked about our strengths and weaknesses while studying. Finally we talked about the jobs that we wanted, and the jobs we would be good at. During the rest of this paper, I will go into more detail about the topics we discussed; and go more in detail with what I learned.
I’m currently enrolled in Montgomery College, located in Maryland. Montgomery College is a community college. Community colleges are different in comparison to four-year universities. I had a choice of either getting a job or going to college. There are many reasons why I choose to go to Montgomery College. I chose to go to college because I want to pursue a degree in Psychology. When choosing a college, there are a lot of decisions to make and you have to choose what’s best in your interest. In today’s society, community colleges take up a lot of the students going to pursue their education. As I went through the research process for this paper I conducted many interviews with former classmates who are now either attending a four-year university or a local community college. The original intent was to find out their reasons for attending the institution they chose to attend. As I accumulated information I began to see a glaring trend in the relationship between the social group the individual was a member of and the college they ended up attending. This then drove me to further examine the influencing factors in these students’ social lives, in a hope of identifying the degree to which they are influenced by each other. Thus, the first part of the paper explores the community colleges of the surrounding area and the programs that they have to offer to students. Meanwhile, the second part of the paper is more of a sociological investigation into peer groups and the factors that lead kids into choosing their institution of higher education. I chose to focus on the institution that is the community college due to the fact that a large number of my former classmates are enrolled in community colleges.
For the past few decades, receiving a college education has been a stressed importance in today’s society. However it is often misunderstood that attending a 4-year school is the best and only way to go. Following this belief, many students attend these schools with out being academically, financially, or mentally prepared. Unfortunately students like this have failed to over look the more realistic options available to them, such as community college. Junior college is a resource available to anyone regardless of his or her previous academic performance. The variety of courses and the inexpensive tuition gives students flexibility to explore the many options presented to them. I am a community college student freshman at Frederick Community College. Being a community college student I value my education and feel if this new proposal is to be put in place there will be people who don’t want to be there just like high school. While I wish finding my way around the school was my only problem, I was faced with some internal challenges. As the school year started, my friends slowly started to leave to these “big shot” colleges or simply move away to other community colleges. I, too, wanted the complete “college experience” somewhere in Arizona or across the country; yet I felt stuck and unaccomplished. Nowadays, many people seek higher education for a better advantage in finding a job and getting a better life. Even though many people think going to a four year university directly from high school is a good idea; they are wrong. Starting out at a two year college is more affordable. Also, it helps people explore careers and prepare people to do better in four years universities later down the road.
It is difficult to imagine a college bound senior making the big decision on where to attend college without the help of college rankings and family influence. Making such an important decision requires heavy research for the college bound student, and it is no surprise that college rankings are one of the first places students look for advice on their future school. Many high school seniors are concerned with the rankings, the “image”, or school pride associated with colleges. As seniors question which school is the best and strive to meet the admissions standards that seem to continually increase, it is important to question whether or not the quality of education is better at colleges with higher rankings and admissions standards. The process behind the rankings should be more exposed and by doing so, it may persuade college bound students to consider other factors that would impact their college experience. This may convince college bound students that rankings and admissions standards are not as important as they are held to be, and it would be beneficial to the students to realize that a quality education can occur at any college and not just the prestigious ones.
I had difficulty transferring to TCNJ from my community college. Attending the college was a culture shock for me, because I differed so much from the students in terms of socioeconomic status and interests. I dealt with untreated depression my two years in community college, and when I went away to college, my symptoms only got worse. In addition, a year ago from this April my brother attempted suicide, which I stowed away within me when I went away to college. Going away to college, the fall after that April, meant I could not be aware of his status and what he was doing. This terrified me and I further spiralled downward. In the fall, I went through phases of extreme sadness and extreme happiness. I had difficulty concentrating and my school work became increasingly difficult.
Schedules are a difficult thing to balance. A person must find the time to complete a number of tasks in a day. A normal adult may have time to get everything done and still have time to spare. The normal college student on the other hand is constantly on the go. College students have busy schedules that include working, studying, and socializing.
College gives people so many opportunities for independence from no longer relying on parents, to choosing if they go to class or not; however, another aspect that contributes to an individual’s sense of independence is the place they choose to live. Having the choice to either stay on-campus or off-campus is a decision that has many aspects to it. Where a student resides is chosen based on the different situations each person is in. Whether the student is an out of state student or they live down the street, and also their financial stability, plays a giant role in where they will end up living. Each option picked no matter if it is on or off campus comes with a different effect, or outcome. Being on campus gives the student more opportunities, and access to resources right at their doorstep, while being off-campus forces the student to become more responsible for themselves and keeping up with their duties.
