Whether or not employees feel valued in their contribution to the workplace is one of the most important factors in their overall perception of their company as a great place to work. In fact, among the “100 Best Companies to Work For” recognized by Fortune (2014), an employee’s sense of their value through strategies such as recognition programs and performance incentives, is more closely associated with their experience of a great workplace than factors such as competent leadership, unique benefits, and even fair pay. However, while programs designed to promote employees sense of value can drive an organization towards success and promote a strong company culture, the performance-based culture of the modern business world can push leadership personnel to inadvertently fall into a pattern of behavior, or “Pittfalls of Leadership”, that leaves their employees feeling as if they don’t matter. Whether it was intentional or not, some leaders treat certain employees by a different set of unwritten rules which ultimately leave the other employees of the organization feeling resentful and as if their contributions have little value. One of the best examples I can give of this pitfall is when I worked for a management that had a history of hiring his friends to work for him which often inadvertently turned into favoritism that other employees like myself took notice of. Sometimes it was as simple as a lunch outing where business was discussed but other times it was more substantial, like salary and promotional benefits. The challenging process of being a leader worth following is an arduous task. Yet, in the book the Five Dysfunctions of a Team, the fictional leader Katherine seemingly demonstrates it with an effortless ease. She established her position as a leader while standing her ground, and encouraging group engagement. Katherine also showcases high emotional intelligence with well thought out responses. Constant reevaluation of her team leads to astounding team building and development. All of these individual traits enabled her to not just be a great CEO, but a leader. A leader which would propel DecisionTech forward, among its competitors.
In a business or a workplace, it is essential for the organization, which consists of the employers, the managers, and their employees, to work towards reward programs within the human resources in order to create a healthy and cordial work environment and most importantly, to efficiently achieve business’ goals. In Carol Patton’s (2013) article, Rewarding Best Behaviors, she explains the importance of several companies that are beginning to recognize their employees, not just for the end-results, but for reflecting good behaviors towards the business’ values, such as demonstrating creativity on certain projects, problem solving towards certain issues, and also collaborating with fellow co-workers. Patton stresses that these reward programs could help suffice the overall being of a company as long as the rewarded behaviors correlate with the corporate strategy. Patton expresses that some things human resources must comprehend include “how its company creates success, what drives its business strategy and what behaviors are needed from employees to achieve that success” (Patton, 2013 para. 15). Moreover, the employee would be reflected as a role model for others and perhaps influence them to demonstrate comparable behaviors.
In the context of the Situational model leadership theory, there are three identifiable weaknesses in my leadership practice. These weaknesses represent shortcomings in my role as a leader and might prevent my team from fully executing the organization’s mission. The three weaknesses are:

There are hidden Rules for students who come from poverty neighborhoods and high schools. Many college and universities are founded on middle class principles, rules, and language. The under resourced student in many cases are lacking this fundamental understanding of what’s expected when they arrive at college. Or even when they apply for college and try to get funding to pay for it. The hidden rules can be in many forms that many middle class students may be able to understand much easier.
One of the topics in organizational development today is leadership. Leadership is what individuals do to mobilize other people in organizations and communities. According to Kouzes & Posner, there are five practices and ten commitments of exemplary leadership. The five practices of exemplary leadership include: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart. In the Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner found similar patterns and actions of leadership that created the essentials to achieve success. Utilizing the research conducted by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, I have created a leadership plan that would apply to the Admission Department at Texas Wesleyan University.
The week of August 14th was very enlightening. As an administrative intern, I spent my time identifying data for rising 9th-grade students, editing the master schedule, and attending the common needs assessment (CNA) unpacking session with the department of public instruction.
With so many constant changes today with different generations, legal and political circumstances and ever-changing and improving technology sources, organizations have new and recurring issues arising every single day. The reasons for these issues vary widely and develop because of so many different situations. The outcome of the situation depends on many factors including the issue at hand, the management style and the ethics of the organization to simply name a few. These outcomes can certainly make or break an organization if not handled appropriately. The issue I have found to be the most significant is leadership. Within leadership, there is the opportunity for many issues in itself.
My biggest personal leadership failure occurred earlier this year when I worked at Einstein Bros Bagels at Coffman Union. I stayed there from January until April making and serving bagels to customers. However, I had the morning shift, the busiest period of the day. Long lines would form every time I was there, and sometimes I couldn’t catch up. One day in April, my co-worker, a veteran making bagels, was absent, and someone who didn’t have as much experience replaced her. What followed was a mess. My team chemistry with the replacement was dreadful, and a ton of people had to wait a while for their orders. My manager saw the incident, and after my shift was over, he gave me the option of leaving my job. I accepted, but my self-confidence was in a state that was beyond repair. It was one of the first times that I felt I let others down with my work performance. I learned that I shouldn’t expect to be great at everything and that I should analyze my weaknesses before taking on something challenging.
By thoroughly analysing the leadership strategies of Proctor and Gamble I have understood that as a leader it is important to use resources effectively, and since the workforce is one of the major resources of a company it should be utilised in the best possible way. This is only possible by constantly motivating them. The leaders of Proctor & Gamble constantly motivates the employees by giving them meaningful work which is effective for some of the employees who believe in doing meaningful jobs and hence it clearly motivates them as they feel to be important for the organisation. Similarly for some of the employees rewards and incentives act to be effective and so leaders understand their mindset and hence organise different reward and incentives programs
Administrative Leadership is the capacity to impact others and guide their conduct to accomplish common objectives and organize their endeavors to give their best to accomplish the goals. I worked at a global company called Henkel. Henkel “formed in 1975 and having approximately 48000 employees worldwide; operates worldwide with leading brands and technologies” (Henkel, 2016). Henkel’s employees rely on each other for success through their creativity and knowledge. Therefore, each one supported others ideas, which led to positively impact in company revenue in 2015 (Henkel, 2015).
Beam (1995) defined traditional rewards systems as hierarchy-based, often tied to seniority or position rather than performance, where rewards were usually a product of promotion. Rewarding stability such as seniority or annual goals create organizations resistant to change (Lawler & Worley, 2006). According to research presented by Lawler and Worley (2006), Chen and Hsieh (2006) and Beam (1995), traditional reward systems are not effective at motivating employee performance or organizational excellence, and they often lead to complacent organizations not capable of the rapid change required to remain effective. As a result, traditional hierarchy-based systems have since been replaced with performance based models.
Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, “Motivation is the art of getting people to do what you want them to do because they want to do it.” Studies have found that high employee motivation goes hand in hand with strong organizational performance and profits. Therefore, managers are given the responsibility of finding the right combination of motivational techniques and rewards to satisfy employees’ needs and encourage great work performance. This becomes a bit more challenging as employees’ needs change from one generation to another. Three of the biggest challenges a manager faces in motivating employees today are the economy and threats to job security, technological advances, and company cultures that primarily focus on the bottom line.
There is considerable debate over merit pay and the effect it has on employees within an organization. Psychologists believe merit pay is related to the incentive theory of psychology; people respond to rewards and with the proper motivation, it increases performance (Cherry). Employers consider merit pay an effective tool and a form of competition strategy for motivating employees to achieve positive performance outcomes. Many employers ignore the fact that incentive plans may motivate some individuals while others have high work ethics and do not need motivation.
