In the wake of it all, I think I’ve learned what it means to be authentically glad. These days, I’m grateful for a hazy afternoon when the man behind the counter of the grocer remembers how I take my coffee, when the gut in the long tunnel of the Sixth Avenue subway stations is still playing “A Hard Day’s Night” on guitar, when the park is filled with strangers laughing at their dogs trying to mount one another. I like picking up a roll of developed film at the corner photo lab and discovering that the world inside the prints confirms that for a few brief moments, the world was as handsome as I thought it was. It convinces me that my efforts aren’t useless. I think I’ve found some meaning here. (Zailckas 332) Koren Zailcakas uses imagery to set a tone that solidifies the connections readers will make with her personal story regardless if they have ever had a sip of alcohol or are recovering addicts. If one has never taken a drink or known what it is felt like to be trapped by the liquid bars that alcohol may hold, one may not comprehend the true depths of Koren’s problem. Even in the end when Koren is breaking free of the shackles her dependence on alcohol has bestowed upon her she narrates with a technique that causes all readers to form an undeniable bond with her experiences. Through the trials and tribulations of Koren Zailckas readers are confronted with the story of a Drunken Girlhood and all she experienced under the influence of alcohol. Individuals are expected to have matured by the time they reach young adulthood so that can aspire to form genuine, stable relationships with their peers but Koren never constructed that desire because her first true relationship was based off alcohol. When she wasn’t she could not make these same associations because bonding with alcohol repetitively was the only constant joy she had in her life. This passage shows a distinct change in Koren. Koren Zalickas was an abuser, her choice of substance was liquor. Although this passage sets a completely different tone of triumph rather than previous despair she remains consistent in using literary device so that the audience can also transition with her. Koren Zailckas creates tone by using common life experiences and uses detailed adjectives to reinforce as evidence. One may not have had the opportunity to encounter abuse in any form but through this memoir Koren’s use of tone and imagery guides readers along her journey and allows for personal connections to be made.
She searches for people that are like her to show her that she has a sense of normality. She feels as though she is alone in this transition in her life and does not know how to cope. She compares herself to a number of different artists that she, now, has a feeling of connection with. She names many successful artists that have all sorts of mental disorders and thought about how they may have become successful partly because of their disorder. This connection to the artists allows Forney to have a sense of not being alone in the world and that there is hope for her in this life.
Previously, the narrator has intimated, “She had all her life long been accustomed to harbor thoughts and emotions which never voiced themselves. They had never taken the form of struggles. They belonged to her and were her own.” Her thoughts and emotions engulf her, but she does not “struggle” with them. They “belonged to her and were her own.” She does not have to share them with anyone; conversely, she must share her life and her money with her husband and children and with the many social organizations and functions her role demands.
Last but not least, O’Connor confirms that even a short story is a multi-layer compound that on the surface may deter even the most enthusiastic reader, but when handled with more care, it conveys universal truths by means of straightforward or violent situations. She herself wished her message to appeal to the readers who, if careful enough, “(…)will come to see it as something more than an account of a family murdered on the way to Florida.”
Smashed: Story of a Drunken Girlhood is Koren Zailckas' account of life as an alcoholic. It traces her life from her first drink, when she was fourteen, to her last, at twenty-two; Smashed chronicles Zailckas' struggle with alcohol abuse, in an effort to explain the binge drinking phenomenon that plagues America's youth.
In contrast, as seen with Dee Ann’s grandmother’s recollections of Dee Ann’s mother, raising her well from her birth results in a very emotional reaction to her death, crying with Dee Ann’s father on the couch (357). By focusing on the needs of her daughter, Dee Ann’s grandmother became emotionally attached to her mother’s well-being, having a connection to the way in which they have lived their life. Likewise, although their relationship was not healthy, Dee Ann’s mother’s addiction to her father’s actions resulted in a dependency that ultimately held their relationship together: “Her momma lived for these routines, she watched till watching killed her (370).” This dependency stems from her father satisfying her mom’s desire for these captivating acts, creating the emotional ties that held the marriage together, at least for some time. In both of these cases, the dependence on the other in the relationship resulted in a reason to maintain it, as their existence is contingent on the other person. In the case of Dee Ann and Chuckie however, their propensity to go out and enjoy themselves on their own suggests a lack of physical dependency on their spouse, weakening the bonds of need by satisfying a desire for company through other means. Chuckie for example, satisfies this desire by going out with friends for a drink, and Dee Ann immerses herself in digital entertainment such as TV or music (362). Their independence results in lacking the emotional attachment necessary to hold their relationship together, destroying the reciprocated love present in healthy

Another way these characters avoid living their life is by drinking continuously, in a way to make the time pass by faster and forget. ?Haven?t you had enough? She loses count after 10 cocktails,? (pg.11) proving to the audience her own self denial, and how she wastes every day. Unfortunately, there are many, who in society today, do the same thing to get out of a situation they?re trying to hide or a difficult time they?re going through. This relates back to their affair which they?re obviously hiding and trying to get through this time in their life.
Brake bases his credibility on the tragic premature loss of four family members due to alcoholism which he refers to as a “deadly disease” (Brake 135). And although it would never be acceptable to wish such terror on anyone, the misfortune is not enough to qualify a person as an expert. Brake presents strong family values and plays into the reader’s compassion for loved ones. Brake also spent two years working as a counselor in a chemical-dependency treatment center, where he gained first hand experience working with a young man who passed out while smoking and a nurse who lost her license and became a prostitute. Thus, the reader ought not to feel sympathy for Cholly. But, Morrison presents information about Cholly in such a way that mandates sympathy from her reader. Morrison creates undeserved sympathy from the reader using language and her depiction of Cholly acting within the bounds of his character. This ultimately generates a reader who becomes soft on crime and led by emotions manipulated by the authority of text.
Irony plays an inexplicable and majestic part in the conclusion of The Awakening. The Confidence Alcohol Gave Me: “I believed the people who romanticized those years, the ones who told me to embrace irresponsibility before I was slapped with the burdens of corporate adulthood” (23). Zailckas’ alcohol binging started at a very young age and followed her for nearly a decade. She turned to alcohol because of her peers who told her to live it up while she was still young and before she had to take on all these adult responsibilities. In the novel, “Smashed: The Story of a Drunken Girlhood,” Koren Zailckas opens up about what caused her alcohol addiction and how it left her with lifelong physical and emotional effects. Ultimately, Roethke’s use of negative diction influences one to believe that his poem tells the story of his abusive father. With the use of negative diction, the author is able to create a woeful and melancholy tone that paints multiple eerie images. After carefully analyzing the poem, one can conclude that the author tells his traumatic experience with his abusive father; Roethke is “beat” on his “head,” his “right ear scrape[s] a buckle,” and he “rompe[s]” to the point that pans begin falling.
