“Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right path, but the final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands.” This is a quote by Anne Frank. Anne Frank is a girl who was forced to grow up way too fast. In this quote, she explains that parents can try and shape you all they want, but at the end of the day it's up to you and your experiences that end up forming who you are, this happens through something called coming of age. Coming of age is a transition in which you evolve and mature as a person—in this case, from teenager to adulthood. Experiencing love and going through loss are two essential components in the coming of age process. “My hand let go of the oxygen cart and I reached up for his neck, and he pulled me up by my waist onto my tiptoes.”(Green, page 130) In this quote, we can interpret Hazel letting go of her oxygen tank to hold Augustus as letting go of her cancer and her fears and just letting herself love and feel. At this moment, Hazel decides to forget she has cancer and just focus on the one thing that matters, her feelings for Augustus. She matures in the sense that she realizes she does not have to be protecting everyone's feelings all the time and she deserves to be loved and to feel love. This proves that love, coming of age, and maturing often go hand in hand. People can cope with loss and grief in very different ways. So he ends up killing himself by drinking a bottle full of poison because he feels he could never get past this and grow as a person. This is obviously an extremely sad part of the play, and it really showcases how not all people are strong enough to overcome their struggles. “And I will never leave this tomb. Here, here I'll remain with worms that are your chamber maids” (Act 5, Scene 3). By Romeo saying he is never leaving Juliet, he shows that even after he knows that Juliet is dead, he is still not willing to let go or move on, he is still attached and does not plan on trying to overcome these feelings of grief in the foreseen future. This proves that even though loss can be a great way to transition from more of a kid mindset to a mature and adult mindset, sometimes it gets too hard and you can feel like there's no way out, even though there is always room for growth and you can always keep on growing.
