Sexism
Generally women has been discriminating for very long time and the fights against woman is getting weaker due to the dedications and inspirations of intellectual females around the world. Men don’t realize the value of women. Gender prejudice has been deal with so long but that doesn’t changed that the existence of sexism. Females face changes in everyday life. Women lived in fearful life, they have been overworking and underpaid feeding less and last. There is no equal opportunities between man and woman in terms of, Educations, Workforces wages, female general modulations, and homes. I have seen and experience woman not receiving educations. This is huge problem not only for woman also as a nations at large. Educating woman would be building brighter future for our children’s and our family it has being said that before “If you educate women it means you educate whole family” but when you give “power a group, gender over another” (23). This proves that the argument that woman have less power to defend themselves other than educate young girls and hope the posterity will have a better life, and will overcome the tragic and horrific sexism upon. Women do not need to ask for power because I really think they already have enough powers but it just that men do not want to admit that because they think they have everything under control but did they ever think about what women goes through, let’s start from the day she marries first she changes her name for her husband, leaves her house and moves in with you, handles the household like cooks food, washes your clothes, takes cares of you, gets pregnant goes through all the pain that pregnancy has starting from the morning sickness to birth that is nine months, but it is just does not end like that because she gets a twenty four hour job with out payment, her body changes, looses her identity and her beauty but still what do they get in return. In today’s technological society it is hard to imagine that trivial things from the past like discrimination or prejudice are still present, but they are. Yes we still have racism, but for the most part this is only a problem of the less educated and vocal minority. There is a different prejudice that is deep rooted in this land of freedom and prosperity. This prejudice is sexism.
Gender bias throughout the court system is shown often when the process comes to sentences and the consequences of the crimes in which individuals partake in. Gender bias comes about when dealing with whether or not a female is charged less than males. Females are usually given smaller sentences rather than males, even if they committed the same crime. On March 22, 2006, for instance, Mary Winkler murdered her husband at their home in Selmer, Tennessee. A year later, she was sentenced to only seven months in custody. The gender bias that goes on in the court system; as revealed in this case, is something many people overlook because they are so concerned with the aspect of racial bias. In the court system, women are constantly discriminated and treated different, gender bias is shown when dealing with sentencing, family law issues, juvenile arrests, and treatment of female lawyers.
Most of the current social work clients and workers are women. This gender is also over-represented among women, which implies that women continue to face considerable issues in the modern society despite the changes in the traditional role of men and women in the society. Social welfare policy are usually developed and implemented to confront various issues in the society including the plight of women. Gender inequality is well reflected in our society today and has been going on for years. Gender has its difference but along the way the judgment of sex, gender and gender roles has a lot to deal with the gender inequalities. These aspects make up the social problems towards discrimination.
Gender inequality specifies to unequal treatment or approach of individuals based on their gender. It occurs from differences in socially constructed gender roles as well as biologically through chromosomes, brain structure, and hormonal differences. In 2006, the World Economic Forum introduced The Global Gender Gap Index. It is a framework that captures the magnitude and capacity of gender-based disparities and tracking their progress. The index measures national gender gaps on political, economic, education and health based criteria, and provides country rankings that allow for effective comparisons across regions and income groups, over time. The rankings are mainly designed to create a greater awareness among a global audience of the challenges posed by gender gaps and the opportunities created by reducing them.
Gender discrimination is the action of being treated worse than others, simply because of your gender. It can occur once or continually over time, by the opposite or same sex. It is an illegal practice here in the United States, based on laws enacted in 1963-4.
Women have been discriminated against since the beginning of time, as early as the first people, Adam and Eve. Eve was called the evil one, who ate fruit from the tree of knowledge. Once she had the knowledge to know right from wrong, she chose to do wrong and give the fruit to Adam. Examples like these can be shown all over history books, in stories, tales and legends across the entire world. Women have been subordinate to men in virtually all societies throughout history.
This research review focuses on the hostile and benevolent sexism in today’s society. Hostile sexism is the view that women are inferior to men, whereas benevolent sexism is putting women on a “pedestal” and believing that need men to protect them. While benevolent isn’t the more obvious form of sexism, it still plays a large role in the inequality of women. The article goes on to say that women throughout history have always been somewhat disadvantaged by society because men always hold the highest roles. Some researchers even said that women are destined to domestic roles due to our genetics of being warm and nurturing.
About one hundred years ago women were still claimed as a man's property. They had no right to vote, they could not be part of a jury and had no rights to property. Not too long ago in the nineteen fifties women could not even own a credit card in their name. Where are we today? Has it really improved very much? I don't think it has, women still can't vote in some Arabic countries. Sexism affected the development and socioeconomic improvement of women in the past. Sexism was first widely recognized as a problem when the first wave of feminism came about in “the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.” (Rampton) Women often experience sexism of some form in the workplace, which is not only degrading and harmful, but also hinders women’s ability as a whole to advance further in society. Sexism not only haunts women in their personal lives, but it follows them into the professional world and prevents them from receiving the same opportunities, pay and treatment as men, impeding their ability to hold positions of power and be recognized for their hard work. The first problem with women’s rights in the workplace was that in many situations, women were not even supposed to work and were instead expected to be a housewife. The United States government was established in 1798 and yet we did not have a woman serving in the US House of Representatives until 1922, 124 years later.
Ever since the dawn of time, discrimination of women has been present in society. As times have changed, there are those who sought to rid society of such discrimination. These change makers have attempted to make way for equal opportunities for the future of women. Hopefully, these changing times in society allow women more opportunities for equality and advancements in the workplace. Whether there is discrimination in the world or not it was purposefully or unintentionally created.
The sexism of school dress codes is getting out of control. Everyone complains that faculty in the school are too strict but are they really? Or is it for the females’ protection? We, as girls, feel that we are being personally targeted.
