As a single mom with four children, I realize the importance of setting a good example for my children. It is difficult trying to instill in them how vital a college education is for their future when I lacked one myself. So making the decision to earn a college degree was easy. The hard part was deciding what area to focus on for a degree, what type of school I wanted to attend and where I saw myself in the future.
Once I made the decision to seek a college degree, I sat down to determine the career I saw myself pursuing. I already knew that I wanted to work in the healthcare field. From the training I received earning a certificate in Medical Assisting and a previous position I held in Medical Pre-Authorization, I determined that
coding would be a career I would not only excel in but enjoy as well. My aunt, a Director of Emergency Room Nursing, referred me to the Health Information Management Director at the hospital where she works. The HIM Director told me that the smartest move I could make, if I wanted to pursue a career in coding, was to earn an associate’s degree in HIM. That is exactly what I did. Towards the end of my final year in the associate’s program, I decided to open up more options taking my education one step further and earn a bachelor’s degree. The decision to earn my degree in a face-to-face learning environment versus an online one was not an easy one. After a great deal of research into the positive and negative aspects of each and knowing myself to be a highly organized individual with the ability to remain focused on a task with little or no supervision, I knew that an online education was the perfect fit. The ultimate ideal career for me is one in a management position. Earning a bachelor’s degree in HIM is the smartest way to prepare myself to meet this goal. It will enable me to move into a management position with the confidence that I know what I am doing. It is important for me to provide a stable foundation of support for my team and for them to feel confident in my leadership abilities. Selecting the direction of my education that would best fit my needs, the type of learning environment for my education and remaining focused on my career goals is the best way to ensure that I have a successful future. Being a positive role model for my children while pursuing my dreams is the best motivation any mother could have.
After review of my skills, interests, and experiences, I decided to pursue the medical career field as my first career choice, more specifically as a physician assistant. I will exceed in this position in the interest of that I like to help people and I solve problems well. Also, I communicate well with others and I have a great amount of patience. There are various careers that fit my skills and interests, but this one grabs my attention. My dream job is to be a doctor, but this occupation allows one to save money by lessening the years of school required. Also, the pay isn’t too shabby either. I will be successful in this position due to my skills, characteristics, and values, like honesty and helping others. Up to this point, I have job shadowed at a medical billing company and I like the idea of diagnosing and helping people, but a desk job is not ideal. Also, I took a medical terminology as a class and I discovered that I like how the body works and what it does. These factors have all influenced my career goal.
... dollars aside from now until your future children determine if they would like to attend college or not. Is the ten dollars a week going to be worth it and are you going to be done paying for your college education as well? In the article, “America’s Most Overrated Product: The Bachelor’s Degree”, author Marty Nemko informs readers on aspects that are not commonly considered when pursuing higher education. Encourage that child to explore all of their options and inform them on not only the positive things you acquired from experiencing higher education, but the hidden down falls you dealt with like managing work loads and paying off debts. A student should be passionate about what they are learning and although it may not be in a classroom setting, sometimes choosing the path less traveled and not attending college can be the most rewarding experience known to man.
Growing up, I was never really sure what career would fit best for me. I didn’t know which direction I was going to take and I always ended up pushing it aside because truly, it scared me. Coming into high school, I ended up with multiple injuries – I sprained my left ankle twice and my right ankle once; I also ended up spraining my elbow. This all happened through cheerleading and lacrosse. I was continually going to the hospital and started to realize what my passion was – being in the medical field. My passion for being in the medical field grew even more when my brother married his girlfriend, Yuko. She happened to be a nurse, as well as my other brother who worked as a physical therapist. Though I didn’t know what field I necessarily wanted to go into, and I still am a little conflicted, I knew my heart was in the medical field. One that I’ve specifically looked into recently has been emergency room nurses.
The career I have chosen for my future is to become a registered dental hygienist. It wasn’t until I actually learned what dental hygienists do that influenced my interest from medical to dentistry. The first honest reason I was gravitated to dental hygiene was because of the salary. I didn’t really know what Dental Hygienist actually did until I did some research.
She told her to graduate from college because the mother having a college degree is the single greatest indicator of whether the children will be college-educated or not. Research agrees with this counsel. It shows that “A mother’s educational level has a profound influence on the educational choices of her [children]” (Madsen) It further shows that, “children of college-educated parents are healthier, perform better academically and are more likely to attend college themselves than children of those with lower educational attainment.” (What Good is a College Education Anyway?) Obtaining a college education provides an example for children to follow and improves their lives, which coincides with the goals of being a stay-at-home
Three years ago my life drastically changed when my husband of 19 years decided he wanted a divorce. I had always been a wife and a mother and only worked part time through the majority of my marriage. Having married at 19, I never thought too much about going to college. I always thought I wanted to be a stay at home mom and never thought too much about what my life would be like once the children grew into adulthood. Now, at 41 years old, I realize how horrible a decision I made by not getting my college education sooner. Trying to go back to school while working full-time and raising two kids on my own is not fun. It’s a struggle to find that right balance of being a good student but also being a good mom. I want to make my kids proud
I am currently planning to attend Richland Community college and graduate as a registered nurse. The reason I chose this career is because helping out others has always driven me forward. I want to study something that I know I will be content doing for the rest of my life and registered nursing is the right choice. Being a nurse has a many perquisites, but my choice has nothing to do with the advantages that it will provide me with. It is more about the fact that I have the chance to make people who are ill feel better and also to hel...
In current times, children are told from a young age that college is imperative to getting a good, stable job. However, this is not always true. Therefore, it cannot be determined if college is always the best choice. Because each person is different and learns in a way unique to themselves, it’s up to each individual to decide whether or not they think they need further education based upon their goals, aspirations, and desires in life. There are many benefits to attending a college or university. For example, college graduates earn about $17,500 more each year than high school graduates. College degrees also give you more options. Not only do you have many career options after obtaining your degree, you also have differing options of how you acquire your degree. Colleges and universities have created many diverse programs, offering traditional classes, online classes, semi-online classes, and night and weekend classes. One of the biggest benefits of attending college is the real world experience you gain from being there and living partially on your own. For most people, college is a time where you can gain experience living with new responsibilities that you don’t have at home, without the pressure of having to pay bills on time
A career in the medical field is always evolving, and always needing more hands. I knew from a young age that helping people is what I was meant to do, and from then on out every step I took was the way to a successful career in nursing. It is a profession that allows you to see people at their worst, all while helping them become their best. The most important task for nursing students is to create a clear pathway for our education, and to be sure to follow that plan accordingly. When choosing this career, I had to access my own strengths and weaknesses and really establish clear goals for myself and evaluate if I had what it takes to be a part of this diverse and skilled profession. I also decided not only not only do I need to set professional goals for this career, personal goals are important as well.
I developed my own influences to attend college that were positive and negative. My biggest internal push towards attending college was to make my parents proud. My parents are people who have been through so much in order to watch me succeed and I want to make all their effort worthwhile
From a young age, I was drawn to the healthcare field, not because the amount of money doctors, nurses and other health professionals made, but because of the dedication and contentment I saw on their faces helping someone in need. Growing up everyone wanted to become a doctor or a nurse and as a little child being a doctor or a nurse was a profession many parents wanted their child to pursue as a career. Needless to say, I fell into that category because I had high hopes that one day I will become a nurse. However, that dream came to a halt.
Self-motivation, self-discipline, time management, and the ability to prioritize are all essential ingredients to graduate successfully. As a single working mother of two kids it is crucial for me to understand where my time is going. The concept of going back to college seemed a little far-stretched, but in today’s economy and job market, it is necessary. I am a mother who leads by example; therefore it is a top priority of mine to balance life and the time commitment to the program as this is a long term investment.
