Dilemma of the Deserted Island
The following question has been asked: What three things I would take with me if I were forced to live on a deserted island? Here are my thoughts:-
1. A YOUNG JACK RUSSELL TERRIER - Training him might keep me occupied for a while and he could guard the camp at night (Hey, there might be large animals prowling the night. Which reminds me of my neighbor, Colin.) My main reason though, is to provide companionship.
My first thought was to bring a human companion, (me Jane, you Tarzan), but I don't know anyone who would want to be stranded with me and I wouldn't want to live alone with someone I had brought against their will. Catch 22.
2. A MACHETE - It can act as a knife, ax, sword and if desperate, it could be used as a hot plate over a fire.
No one told me what sort of island it would be, so I've tried to think of the most versatile tool to bring. With a machete I should be able to make a shelter, fashion other tools and spend many hours learning to whittle. But I really think I would feel more secure with one in my hand if I was attacked by say, a hungry lion. You might be surprised what a sharp machete is capable of and I hope the lion would be too.
3. A MEDIUM SIZED COOKING POT - I've done enough camping to know how difficult things can get without an easy way of cooking.
It would also come in handy for rendering animal fat for my home made lanterns, distilling salt water if there is no running water, (Most Australian islands are dry), it would catch the drips from the mandatory leak in my man-made shelter and finally I could use it to make monotonous music to amuse the dog.
What would you do if you were stranded on an Island all by yourself with a few
In "Young Goodman Brown," Hawthorne analyzes the Puritans’ consciousness and the hidden wickedness of their nature. He takes a naïve Puritan man and takes him on a journey into the dark forest to meet an old man whom we presume, is the devil. As the naïve Puritan embarks on his journey, his wife "Faith" kisses him good bye. The Puritan has an overwhelming feeling of guilt as he is entering the forest to meet with the Devil. He realized what he is doing was forbidden and none of his forefathers or fellow Puritans would ever commit such a sin. During his meeting with the Devil his naïveté dissolves. He sees Deacon Gookin, his old catechism teacher, and other upstanding members of the community, whom he looked up to and feared, dancing around the Devil’s fire. He is told that the Devil has helped his father and Grandfather in years past. His innocence is completely destroyed when he sees his own wife Faith dancing around the Devils circle . He screams in agony: "My faith is gone. There is no good on earth; and sin is but a ...
In the novel Wuthering Heights, author Emily Brontë portrays the morally ambiguous character of Heathcliff through his neglected upbringing, cruel motives, and vengeful actions.
The ten characters range from a retired judge to a mercenary soldier. All of these people are invited to stay on the island, by the request of a millionaire who regrettably fails to appear when they arrive at the island. Each one of these people comes from different lifestyles, and has been brought to this island for various reasons. One thing that holds all of these people together are the fact the each one is ...
College is not for everyone, although, everyone should have some form of higher education. "Should everyone go to college?" is an essay meant to inform students of the pros and cons of going to college. Owens and Sawhill state that the cost of a college degree may not be worth the money that students put into furthering their education. In their article, Owens and Sawhill use three different rhetorical appeals; egos, logos, and pathos; to persuade the readers to think consciously about attending college. Their argument was effective because it forces the readers to look at the overall college experience in different aspects.
People had different opinions on the island. Some people wanted to have fire and the other half wanted food. They would need both to have a good lifestyle but would have to agree on who would hunt and who would keep the fire going. They needed the fire as a signal to leave the island and also to cook food to stay alive. John Locks would not like this because when this happened, there wasn't a vote and some of the people left because they didn't agree with each other.
In “Young Goodman Brown” Hawthorne uses the hypocritical nature of Young Goodman Browns neighbors and friends to show the hypocritical nature of the puritan people. In the story, Young Goodman Brown is led by the devil to a witching party in the woods. At the witching party he sees all the people he thought to be honorable and pious. He sees his minister, and Goody Cloyse, the woman who taught him his catechisms, meeting with the devil. He even sees his wife about to join the commune but doesn’t see whether she does or not because he resists the devil and wakes up by a tree. After witnessing these things in the woods Young Goodman Brown can’t look at the people he loved and looked up to in the same way anymore. He becomes a bitter and distrustful old man because of their hypocr...

What is island life? what do you think of island life? My opinion of island life is a a place were you do what you want to do and with you you want to do it with. The book Lord of the Flies by William Golding and movie Castaway (2000) is directed by Robert Zeneckis. He similarly explores what happens to mankind when left stranded on an island without civilisation, rules and order. In Lord of the Flies a group of boys are left to themselves after experiencing a plane crash, leaving them alone on an island. Golding shows that evil desires, the basis of human nature is revealed when left to oneself. In Castaway it different compared to Lord Of The Flies because in castaway there is only on person stuck on the island while golding has a dozen.Composer achieves their unique perspectives by exploring civilisation, characterisation and through the theme ‘survival’.
Hawthorne never tells the reader that Goodman Brown is going to a witch meeting. He only gives you evidence to support the fact that he shouldn’t be going there. “ We have been a race of honest men and good Christians.” (Hawthorne 2). Goodman tells the traveler when they are following the path in the forest. “shall I be the first of the name of Brown that ever took this path and kept”(Hawthorne 2) . "There is my wife, Faith. It would break her dear little heart; and I 'd rather break my own." (Hawthorne 3). Goodman Brown knew where he was going would crush his Faith, but he never says that is was a witch meeting.
For the past few months I have been attending college as a first year, but recently I have started to ask myself is college really worth it? Or is there a better alternative other than going on the traditional path to college? Furthermore if there are alternative path instead of attending college, why aren’t we taking them? In many situations we do have the option of acquiring special licenses and certifications that can get us the careers we desire, but without the need to attend college, but if we can do things like getting licenses and certificates then why do most of us choose to go to college knowing that there is a better option? Even more, a better option that will probably not cost you as much in the long run. Yet millions upon millions of students make the choice of going to college every year, for this I ask why?
food and tools to work with. He also has strong spirit to face the harsh life
Islands were designed by the government to preserve society’s lack of knowledge of the past and new, curious ideas. Those who are sent to the island are described as, “the people who, for one reason or another, have got too self-consciously individual to fit into community-life. All the people who aren 't satisfied with orthodoxy, who 've got independent ideas of their own.” Since society lacks knowledge and curious thinking, those who do not fit that standard are sent away to prevent their ideas and curiosities from spreading throughout
Nathaniel Hawthorne did not write Young Goodman Brown to insult the Puritans’ views on religion. By the time he wrote this short story, the Puritans did not exist anymore. Hawthorne simple shows how their way of religion can affect a person’s life and how they struggle to live to the standards of a “good Christian”. Goodman Brown seems to struggle with being what the Puritans consider a good Christian man. He fits the image of a good Christian but did not have the relationship that one should have. If he did have a Christian like faith he would not have fallen deep into temptation, lose faith in his religion and became a stern bitter man.
What would you do if you were going on a journey to a new world during winter, and you didn’t know how to get food or shelter? In 1921 a group of 132 people set off on a voyage on the Mayflower to find a better life and religious freedom. Before they could start their better life they had to find food and make shelter. The pilgrims stayed on their boat for most of the winter to get away from the snow, sleet, and high winds. When the pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians became friends and made a peace treaty, later Squanto helped them find food and shelter.
