Madonna’s lead single and title track off of her thirteenth album (only her eighth studio album) reached Number One on the U.K. charts fourteen years ago today. It was her tenth Number One single in the U.K. at the time. The music video for “Music” stars British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, in his famous role as the Brit wangsta Ali G. It was written and produced by Madonna and Mirwais Ahmadzaï, and was released as a single from Music by Maverick Records on August 21st, 2000. The song was also included on her compilation albums, 2009’s Celebration and 2001’s GHV2. The cynosure for music video of the hit single “Music” is centered around Madonna’s theory that music brings people together and makes parties fun. Specifically, it is Madonna and her friends partying in the back of a limo chauffeured by Sacha Baron Cohen as Ali G. The opening skit starts with Madonna saying, “Hey mister DJ, put a record on - I wanna dance with my baby,” in a seductively androgynous voice. The song “Most People are Good” by Luke Bryan, describes a theme of hope and seizing the day. This song is clearly directed to an adult audience for it could not be relatable to a younger crowd. The song offers words of wisdom and a recollection of youthful times gone by. The song is told in the first person and portrayed by an ageing man or woman who is expressing their beliefs and personal morals through their experience of youth and forgiveness. The hopeful lyrics are informal but provide bright ideas expressed with a buoyant attitude.

With the spotlight focused entirely on her, the crowd erupts into deafening applause as she begins her incomparable dance routines. She is an icon. She is Madonna. History has never seen a cultural figure with as much controversy or flair for the dramatic as Madonna, nor will history ever see such a figure. Madonna’s name is recognized by everyone, as is evidenced in a survey taken of fifty people of varying ages (shown below). These facts alone are enough to engrave her name in pop culture history, but the making of an icon does not stop there. Madonna’s reputation, however, provides little evidence to suggest any redeeming diva qualities or musical talent. Specifically, her voice is ‘often criticised as being the weakest aspect of her performances’ (Moohan, E,. 2008, p.163) and she upholds her status as a diva due to the ‘notion of her as a powerful and controversial figure’ (Nick Jones, 2008, p. 171) and not her artistic pieces. According to Jody Rosen, pop critic in New York Times, Bruno Mars is someone with a dynamic stage presence but has not made any effort to construct offstage persona around himself. The journalist missed the main point here. Bruno Mars’ music and his singing craft are so great and that’s what elevates him into the type of performer worthy of appearing at the Super Bowl and entertaining massive audience. So why does he need fragrance deals or some offstage persona to shine when he is already shining without it?
The importance of music in movies is highly regarded for manipulating the viewer’s emotions and helping them immerse into the story. Music is one of the prime elements in cinema. Without it a movie would feel dull and unexciting. There are three elements in a movie: one is acting, the second is picture, and the third one is music. It is a holy trinity; if incomplete, there would be a lack of sensation and excitement. Both acting and picture can stand independently from one another, but music is the one that makes the movie memorable.
Society has finally accepted feminine independence and accredited Madonna as the pioneer for introducing that autonomy. In many ways, she now represents the woman’s metamorphosis. As Fiske noted she began by showing “both her pleasure in her own physicality and the fun she finds (found) in admitting and expressing pleasure: it is (was) a sexual-physical pleasure that has (had) nothing to do with men…(Fiske 285).” While this may have been an impression of Madonna in the 1980’s, she has evolved into what society deems as the epitome of badass woman: utterly independent.
