In regards to the development of children, the proverb “it takes a village to raise a child” serves as the basis for encompassing all of the underlying elements which ultimately influence development. With this in mind, as influential as early childhood educators have the potential to be in isolation, this influence is enhanced even further through working together with the other major stakeholders closest to a child’s life; namely families and communities. This is because having the opportunity to observe key people in their lives working together harmoniously serves to contribute to the development of a child’s sense of identify; which is cultivated through positive connections between their family, culture, and environment. These responsibilities are primarily concerned with conducting oneself in an ethical and professional manner; which involves early childhood educators aspiring to be the best teacher they can be and supporting others in providing quality services with the highest standards (Feeny & Kipnis, 2005; Howard, Williams, & Lepper, 2009).
As part of this, early childhood educators face many daily decisions that have professional and ethical implications; especially given their obligation to not only the child, but a variety of stakeholders. Because of this, it is imperative that an effective code of ethics is instituted within the early childhood profession to provide a framework for educators to respond to these circumstances in the most appropriate manner possible.
