I had an amazing clinical instructor for medsurg 2. She was a great leader and was very passionate about her job. She took pride in what she did, and encouraged the students to feel the same way. The instructor told us it takes a special kind of person to be a nurse and that we should treat patients how we would want someone to treat our loved ones. Our final day of clinical, I got to experience what an amazing leader this women is. That day, I was taking care of an elderly patient who had a stroke and was unresponsive. Her oxygen saturation had been hanging around 94-96% all day even with a nasal cannula. We decided to check the condition of her mouth and were shocked. The patient a large amount of, what seemed to be, a glue like mucus all around, and in, her mouth. We spent 20 minutes suctioning and trying to swab out as much as we could. When we were done her SP02 had risen to 99%. Immediately after, my clinical instructor went to the patients nurse and nurse aid, and demanded to know why the patient hadn’t been suctioned or mouth care done in what seemed like days. She encouraged the floor to take pride in their work and do it well. Patient care needs to be top priority and shouldn’t be neglected. In my experience I believe the motivation theory that best fits my situation is McClelland’s theory of needs. In McClelland’s acquired need theory, he proposed that individuals are not born with these needs. Specific needs are acquired over time and are formed by one’s life experiences. This time, I decided to be more talkative and ask more questions about the patients. My senior nurse showed me a patient who fell down a couple flight of stairs and due to his accident, he injured his brain severely to the point where he couldn’t speak anymore. She explained to me all the medications that he had to take and how she had to look up the patient’s lab report because the medications he takes might affect him in different ways. After she was done with looking up his lab reports, I watched her feed the patient for an hour and thirty minutes. During this time, I really felt bad for the patient because he was half-awake and half-asleep while eating. It saddened me how we had to disrupt his resting time to feed him before he could take his medication. After the patient was done eating, I watched the nurse give the patient Lovenox, which I learned was given to patients who are immobile in order to stop blood clotting. After giving him his medication, we had to transfer him off the bed and into a chair, which was my favorite part about this clinical observation. I got to physically help move him off his bed and into a chair. This took 3 nurses, including myself to move him and it made me realize how nursing really requires teamwork. Today’s clinical experience truly affected me in multiple ways. I went into this day with an open mind, and was pleased with the patients and the way I was able to conduct myself. This clinical affected me because throughout the day I felt that I experienced many emotions. A few times during my day I did have to fight back tears. I felt I had this emotion because some of the individuals expressed how they wanted to get better in order to get home to their families.

Theories of Motivation What is the motivation for this? According to the text, motivation is defined as a set of factors that activate, direct, and maintain behavior, usually toward a certain goal. Motivation is the energy that makes us do things; this is a result of our individual needs being satisfied so that we have inspiration to complete the mission. These needs vary from person to person as everybody has their individual needs to motivate themselves.
In the 1940s Abraham Maslow created his famous theory of needs and set the groundwork for David McClelland who in 1961 launched his book, “The Achieving Society” (Mind Tools, n.d.). McClelland’s Acquired Needs Theory explores the thought that “needs are acquired throughout life…needs are not innate, but are learned or developed as a result of one’s life experiences” (Buchbinder & Shanks, 2007, p.27). I believe placing student nurses in the clinical setting is vital in becoming competent nurses. Every experience the student experiences during their placement has an educative nature therefore, it is important for the students to take some time to reflect on these experiences. A specific situation that stood out to me from my clinical experience was that; I didn’t realize I had ignored the patient’s pain until I was later asked by the nurse if the patient was in any pain.

The course Psychology 361: Introduction to Clinical Psychology served as an introduction to the profession and personal life of clinical psychologists. We discussed the ethical and legal issues, the importance of the client-therapist relationship, the rights and responsibilities of the client and the therapist and the different types of therapy within this field of practice. However, after evaluating these concepts in depth, I have come to find some of the material surprising, interesting and difficult to understand. After recognizing my interests and conflicts within clinical psychology, I was able to evaluate myself and determine this profession would not suit me as an individual.
I went to the operating room on March 23, 2016 for the Wilkes Community College Nursing Class of 2017 for observation. Another student and I were assigned to this unit from 7:30am-2:00pm. When we got their we changed into the operating room scrubs, placed a bonnet on our heads and placed booties over our shoes. I got to observe three different surgeries, two laparoscopic shoulder surgeries and one ankle surgery. While cleaning the surgical room for the next surgery, I got to communicate with the nurses and surgical team they explained the flow and equipment that was used in the operating room.
