I had an amazing clinical instructor for medsurg 2. She was a great leader and was very passionate about her job. She took pride in what she did, and encouraged the students to feel the same way. The instructor told us it takes a special kind of person to be a nurse and that we should treat patients how we would want someone to treat our loved ones. Our final day of clinical, I got to experience what an amazing leader this women is. That day, I was taking care of an elderly patient who had a stroke and was unresponsive. Her oxygen saturation had been hanging around 94-96% all day even with a nasal cannula. We decided to check the condition of her mouth and were shocked. The patient a large amount of, what seemed to be, a glue like mucus all around, and in, her mouth. We spent 20 minutes suctioning and trying to swab out as much as we could. When we were done her SP02 had risen to 99%. Immediately after, my clinical instructor went to the patients nurse and nurse aid, and demanded to know why the patient hadn’t been suctioned or mouth care done in what seemed like days. She encouraged the floor to take pride in their work and do it well. Patient care needs to be top priority and shouldn’t be neglected. It is what causes us to take action. Motivation can be biological, social, emotional or cognitive in nature. In my experience I believe the motivation theory that best fits my situation is McClelland’s theory of needs. In McClelland’s acquired need theory, he proposed that individuals are not born with these needs. Specific needs are acquired over time and are formed by one’s life experiences.
