As I moved through each of the case studies, I was able to expand my knowledge and learning regarding the clinical decision making process. In particular, I believe my understanding as to the importance of conducting a physical assessment of a patient was the largest development I had in my learning. This is due to the fact that as the course went on, it was reinforced to me that a physical assessment is imperative to care as it allows the nurse to determine any health concerns that a patient may have, whether they are associated with his or her initial reason for the appointment, or separate. At first, I found this to be mildly concerning as I believe that these needs are related to and can influence Suzan and Lillian’s health concern(s) in one way or another. Upon further reflection on this situation, I realized that those developing this perspective might have decided that it was best to solely focus on the patient who was seeking care because amongst other reasons, her family members might have chosen against being part of the care process. Moreover, although focusing on the central patient is a critical aspect in nursing care, I believe that the individuals working on this perspective should have also stated that the nurse must address the needs of Suzan and Lillian’s family members at a later time. They could have then explained some ideas as to how the nurse could work with these people to meet their needs and in turn improve their health. In Suzan’s case, these ideas might include providing care to John to help with his abusive tendencies and drinking as well as assessing what could be causing him to act in this manner. Additionally, the nurse working with Lillian could address her children’s issue with television and video games, suggest coping mechanisms Eric could employ when he is feeling down as a result of his slower maturation, and propose relaxation techniques for Aileen to use when she is feeling
