What Is My Name?
It is important for people to have names, because your name and describes who you are and shapes your identity. I am Charles Fredrick Burke Anderson. I may have common names, but they come from a proud heritage. My name Charles has a long history, and many people have my name, but each person with the name Charles has his own history of how or why he got that name. Even though many people have the same name as me, we are all one of a kind.

passed away when my mother was a teenager, so it was very meaningful for her to have her father's name within my name. My Father's father was named Charles Anderson, he passed away very recently before I was born, so it was a big part of his life around when I was born so I was named Charles to represent my grandfather Charles Anderson. Anderson is my last name, has a long and proud history.
The surname Anderson originated from many countries, some of which were Scotland, England, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. My form of Anderson originated from Sweden as Andersson, with two S's. In countries around the time when my surname was first used, people would be known as Anders of their village, for example. When the name anders became to popular they would get surnames for their fathers name, for example with Anders, his son would have the surname Andersson, meaning son of anders. Andersson is an example of a patronymic surname, a surname derived from a first name. It is unlike a toponymic surname, which is a surname derived from a place for example the first people with the name Burke would have lived near a burg, meaning fortification, so they would have lived near a fort. The form Anderson I am would have came from Sweden as Andersson with two S's, and when the family got to the United States, their name would have been changed to Anderson with one S by immigration records, because it was easier to spell, and

Throughout history many people have bared the name Charles. One of the very first people to bear the name Charles was Charles The Great, who lived from 742-814. Charles The Great was also known as Charlemagne. He was the king of the franks when they came to rule over most of Europe. When Charlemagne died the name Charles became very popular in some countries, and even became the standard word for "king" in many countries as well. Some of which included many Russian areas. My name Charles Fredrick Burke Anderson, has had a long history, and dates back in my family. My name is the living membrane of my grandfathers. I never had the chance to meet my grandfathers, but because I was named after them I can feel like I've met them. After completing this project I feel like I have been able to link my identity to my name with stronger connections, and in more ways then before.
When you think your average baseball player, what do you think of? The player usually has all of his arms, legs, and no physical disabilities. Anyone who plays baseball would think it is hard to imagine that a person born without a right arm is able to play the game and let only be able to be a pitcher. Jim Abbott faces all the odds and has ten-year career in the major leagues. Abbott had to faces many obstacles throughout life and his playing career. Jim Abbott grew up being picked on since he didn’t have a right arm. When Abbott was younger he would use a steel hook as right hand and other children were afraid of him. Also, they called him names like Mr. Hook.

Ayn Rand’s novel “Anthem” is a book in which the people written about do not have names. The importance of having your own individual names is huge. A name can have meaning given to it, like how the name Sue means lily. Most parents when giving you your name have a meaning behind it and put much thought into what their future child should be named. Names can give you a part of your identity.
Everyone’s surname has a history behind it, some surnames have been around since the very beginning of Christ and some have been moulded and reformed over the centuries. The Millar Clan has had quite a journey from Scotland all the way down to Southern Africa, to me. Some say it was originally another surname and some say that it was all made up, but I have researched the true and factual origin and formation of the Millar surname. The trilogy has a mixture of atypical names. When looking deeper into the specific characters’ roles and having knowledge of history and nature, there are definite connections. The characters influenced the author, Collins, through history and nature aspects and they obtained their names with strategic time put into them. Something as small as a character’s name can help us understand the specific personality better through knowledge of outside materials.
Manuel Munoz writes about Mexican names and how people who are not Mexican “butcher” their names. Munoz also talks about the reason why he was named Manuel and expectations he is given based off of his name. I’ve had similar experiences when people say my name, I’ve had people expect things of me based off of my name, and my name has special significance to my family as well.
James’ father Charles was born in Auckland New Zealand to Jewish parents. When he emigrated to Australia he changed his last name to Martin so that he wouldn’t be discriminated against as a Jew. The meaning of my middle name Elaine is, “bright, shining light”. My last name Voskuyl has a very interesting meaning, “foxhole”. I asked my parents and relatives about our heritage and where our last name came from they all said that the origin of our last name is Dutch. In today’s society we all want to know who we are and where our names originated from. Our names are what give each of us our own style and individuality, the importance of style and individuality can be related back to our original surnames. Our surnames have come from all areas of the world, each with specific meanings to our family. Surnames or last names have an important meaning to all of us, they give us identity through our family’s history. Looking back into history our names have changed drastically, keeping some people from knowing how their surnames really originated. Surnames originated early in history and did so for many reasons.
It’s kind of hard to believe that I would change my name to Lucrecia because I didn’t really like my mother’s name until recently. I always thought her name was weird and unusual. I never met anyone else with that name. Now, I would be more than happy to change my name to Lucrecia, after my mother, because she means a great deal to me.
